Just a skeptical note: why did it take so many months for these spontaneous eruptions to coalesce into these demonstrations? I support them, but I'm baffled that they weren't occuring in October and November. . . .

: Columbia is particularly deadset on building and opening a branch of their university in Tel Aviv, so in their case, the demonstrations arose from the student body's personal disapproval of where tuition dollars are being invested - hence the calls to divest. The spread of demonstrations across the US primarily come from a point of solidarity, but make no mistake, other universities have vested interests in Israel and tuition dollars are being used to keep capital circulating.
As far as why this hasn't happened sooner - honestly, it's a matter of time and material conditions dictating the nature of the effort. The situation has degenerated into such a sorry state that many students are willing to make radical decisions regarding their enrollment in these institutions. Exposure to various risks be damned, the worthiness of the struggle itself outweighs every risk imaginable to them.
