Mark Nixon It does that to me too. We had a steam train that came through Chester, Vermont when I was a kid. "Steamtown" I guess it's down in Strasberg, Pa now, but not sure if that's the one depicted in this video. We used to swim under a trestle that they passed over just south of the depot. We'd tuck in to the railings on that trestle when the old girl would pass by. She'd shake your insides... being just a few feet from your face. Very scary and man did it make those guys from steamtown mad!

    Ave Saepimentum!
On praries wide and mountains steep,
In bright sunshine or rain and sleet
See the headlamps shine and hear the engines roar
as the railcars click by, row on row.
Give us this day our journey long,
And our daily bread to keep us strong.
Give us songs to sing and stories to tell,
with peals of laughter, like ringing bells.
Give us good sense and our passions, stay
That we might live to see dawn and die another day.
But if we should die on these tracks we ride,
Know we met our end with courage and pride,
And on praries wide and mountains steep,
the sun may shine dimmer and the skies may weep,
But the headlamps will still shine and the engines still roar,
And carry our names down the tracks evermore.
Weep ye not for the end of our tale,
For in life, unto death, we chose the narrow rails.
    Cold! Hard! Steel!

There's nothing quite like the sound of a good old fashioned steam whistle echoing through the mountains. If there's a better example in the world than Cass, I agree it'd have to be Tweetsie. This just proves to me even more that I need to do more research on the actual specifications of the different whistles.

The "chimes" is the number if individual sound channels for the steam to travel though. The steam is channeled into the chimes when the whistle is blown. The number of "chimes" and the size of them can affect the sound of the whistle.

My number #1, home-built Southern Pacific 6 Chime. Heard one at the Thanksgiving weekend whistle blow in Youngstown, OH about 5 or 6 years ago and realized that is the whistle on the soundtrack for "Petticoat Junction", which makes sense. There would be stock sound of one of those in the movie studio archives. It certainly was not the actual whistle on Sierra #3, which sounds like it has a one note hooter. Closely followed by the standard Nickel Plate Berkshire Nathan six chime on #765. While not a really "pretty" whistle, there is absolutely no mistaking what locomotive is coming when you hear it, and it sounds like it means business.

Yea, I love these things. I just hate that they are not in official service anymore. (You will need to understand how a steam engine works to understand this next part) You know how a steam locomotive burns something to make heat to boil the water? I think steam engines should be brought back, but not be fossil fuel powered. But electric! The electricity would go through wire in the pipes inside the boiler. And that would still boil the water! And instead of carrying the fuel source in the tender, why not a solar panel or a battery? If anyone agree's with me that would be great. Because I love these POWERFUL and AWESOME machines!

If you never got to hear it live, try and find a recording of the Steam version of the Nathan K5LA air horn (same notes) that Chessie had made for C&O 614 for the Chessie Safety Express. Truly magnificent. I would call that a great sounding whistle. Also, the Santa Fe six chime whistle on the Texas State engine sounds a lot like the NKP Berkshire whistle (a Nathan six-chime, I think) on NKP 765 (supposedly actually off NKP #700, the first NKP Berk). Some whistles sound a lot better echoing off in the distance, and that is one of those whistles. After years of wondering where it came from, I think I finally figured out where one of my favorite whistle sounds came from - the whistle used at the beginning of "Petticoat Junction", which is not the regular whistle used on Sierra #3. I believe that they used a recording of a home-made SP six-chime whistle. As for some of your other whistles, the Three Rivers Rambler three-chime sounds a great deal like the whistle on Ohio Central G5 Pacific 1293. Finally, it's really hard to beat just about any of the Cass whistles echoing off of the mountains.

Carter Wall They don't all sound the same. Compare a the whistles on Black 5's, A4 Pacific's, 9f's, pannier tanks, Castle classes and they are very different.

+Carter Wall You obviously know nothing about the British whistles/hooters, there at least five different styles, it sound to me as if all the American ones are of the same style.

Whistles were given names to identify the sound they made, I'm not sure what they identify though. :-P
