    Weird rum El Presidente showdown? Yes please!

    Beach ball, burnt rubber, and diesel can sometimes be tough and bullies. Maybe open over time it'll mellow into more bubble gum. If I remember right, Starr rum is also from Mauritius and has a bubble gum flavor. Also, who doesn't love a good presidente, and this is definitely the channel for them, but I think it could also be fun to do a bunch of whacky rum mai tais.

      oh yeah maybe I'll do weird mai tais next, I'll have to make some Orgeat.

    Yay! I'm all here for more Rum Talk from all over the world. You can do the same with Whiskey, like Amrut or Kavalan.

    Like weird stuff? Why yes, I do! Given the way that palates vary, I'm quite curious if the "beach ball" (vinyl?) flavor would read the same for me. I don't know that it's an aroma/flavor I've identified before in a spirit (rubber, yes; acetone, yes... hmm).

    • @UnclePete

      It might be bubble gum or acetone but it’s weird whatever it is

    Loving all these rum talks! So I picked up that Holmes Cay Grande Arome a while back and initially had the same "what the...?? reaction as you, but I discovered that this weird beast makes a better rum scaffa than any other rum I've tried making one with. I've gone through half a bottle making these. I do 1 oz Grande Arome, fat 1/2 oz Bendictine and a dash of Ango, combined and served room temperature. to my palate it's like giving a X-mas honey baked ham treatment to an expensive new leather car interior.

    Nice, I would like to see more options from these islands but the US market is limited. I have seen the 3 year Mauritius on the Oregon Liqour inventory and curious, but after your review, may have to pass as you and I share a lot of similar rum preferences. I have a few indian ocean rums, Mauritius: Grays Distillery, Holmes Cay Single cask 15 year, Awesome and almost gone. Reunion: Savana Distillery, unaged and interesting, I use it in small amounts to make daiquiri's more interesting as it has notes of not quite ripe strawberries. Maison du Rhum (IB) 10 year old from Riviere du Mat distillery, interesting and kinda just alright, this bottle has that weird menthol finish that personally doesn't always work well for me. I find similar notes in St Lucia and Guadelupe molasses rums. Strangely, I WestWard single malt out of Oregon (standard bottling) has that same finish(at least for me) which is sad as I find the nose and early palate of Westward excellent and then turns into this menthol/minty finish and oof... but I digress. Presidente show down, why not!

      I would like to see more options as well, These Reunion ones didn't really do it for me.
      The Mauritius one is pretty good, but not unique or special really, maybe not worth the $65.
      I also find the westward to be a bit weird, I find it has a hoppy, stinky marjuana taste that I find quite weird. Im glad to hear I'm not the only one.

    Mmmm mustardy beach ball . . . can't say I'm not curious!
    I recently picked up a rum from Mendocino-like MADE in Mendocino. Pretty good! I had no idea they made rum in such far flung places.
    I've never had rhum agricole. (Perhaps in a tiki drink but I wasn't paying attention.) Any recommendations for where to start?

    • @UnclePete
      @UnclePete  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Yeah if you're new to Agricole, you might start with an aged one, might be a softer entry. Clement is good and Neissen too. or matbe JM Rhum. Those should be easy to find. Have fun!
