This was my exam piece together with 2 Bach English Suites and Chopin black keys Etude when I was 15. Now I don’t play anymore, seems another age, another world.
If the last movement reminds anyone of The Nutcracker, it is indeed modeled after the traditional Grossvatertanz. Tchaikovsky was a great admirer of Schumann’s music, so the segment in the ballet may be directly inspired by Schumann.
Gosh, I’m preparing for a conservatoire audition, and me and my teacher have been playing around with pieces to use, and recently he decided the Brahms I was going to do wasn’t really novel enough (he’s getting repertoire which is subtle and stands out rather than wows) and he said, go have a listen to Papillons. I am blown away honestly. Such a lovely piece and written so early by Schumann and has all the life and spirit of his later compositions but youthfulness as well. Anyway to all who read this I hope you have a wonderful day
I had a great friend named Steve Stauffer back in the 80$😍and he played a selection of these pieces not as fast as this fabullous pianist, but brilliant just the same.He was openly gay and had a male lover that he was with for years.Great composer I'd like to get his version of this on U tube also I look for some of his compositions on U tube but are unavailable 🤔🤔.Anyway if I could time machine it I'd go back to that time and age .Enjoyed my youth and my friendship with Steve and Ron Miss them😍
A lovely interpretation! Captures just the right dynamic range for the intimate quality of this collectiin of charming miniatures artfully tied together by Scumann's genius. Full of warmth and whimsy. I love Demus' use of subtle highly individuaistic rubato.
@@stephenn77 No, it's Liszt. I mean, Chopin's Ballade also begins in ascending parallel octaves, but Liszt's is actually more similar harmonically and rhythmically.
In No. 3, Schumann has wedges over the first notes, indicating (I think) a detached articulation. Demus, though, has added some slurs. I don't think I even like them. Anyone else notice that?
Wikipedia's article on musical accents tells us this: "The marcato, which is Italian for "well marked", shown third, the vertical open wedge, is generally accepted to be as loud as an accent mark and as short as a staccato. Martellato, Italian for "hammered", is another name for the marcato symbol used primarily by orchestral string musicians as it refers to the specific bowing technique used to create marcato. In jazz articulation, marcato is typically stated as "daht" yet the performing musician may interpret the duration of the note differently depending on what style of jazz they are playing." So that in jazz, apparently, marcato doesn't necessarily imply staccato. On the violin, I'd expect to bite into the string some with the bow; at the piano, loud & clipped.
Jorg Demus has recorded every Schumann piece in existence but I think it's a case of quality over quantity. He doesn't look at enough details in a lot of these works and some of the interpretations become mediocre. His Schumann Toccata is particularly poor.
It's called "Grossvater Tanz" (Granfather's Dance), it's a folk dance in German speaking countries, and, for what I know, it's played in parties when you want your guests to leave. Schumman also quotes it also in Carnaval, in the "Marche des Davidsbündler contre les Philistins", and since Tchaikovsky was a big fan of Schumann, it's possible he took the melody from him
Practice it! I've been at it now for almost one year. It took a long time, but now I'm almost able to play it all completely in its entirety, albeit at a slow tempo. XD
@@dianthe5756 I couldn't at first (do you mean No. 2?), But yeah, taking them at a deliberately slow tempo (be specific) and try to play them well with the correct sound and playing, until you are completely comfortable playing it slowly. Then, gradually take up the tempo.
Try different exercises and warm ups in order to prepare before practicing the piece. And try different to types of specific technique drills for knocking out some of the more technically challenging bits. And practice without pedal. The main thing is: you don't want to be playing this piece tensely. You should feel this song simple, light, and full of character. Be melodious with it too! Make sure you are singing each movement, and that will be easier the farther you get with the piece.
@@Checkmate1138 thank you so much! And yeah, I meant no.2 lol. Do you know any specific exercises I could try to prepare my fingers and improve my skill? I don't really know too many exercises.
Surely, you can play these pieces as etudes and to show off your techniques - but this version does not understand most of the delicacy and fine poetry that actually is hidden in these little treasures. To see what I mean please listen, e.g. to Richter or Kempff (or Arrau).
I disagree- Demus has a very good feel for Schumann's music in my opinion. He characterizes the individual pieces without loosing the shape of the bigger context. Enjoyable!
Schumann is a weird case. I don't think he's as talented as Chopin or Schubert. Yet he has some good material. For example, the theme of Papillons. But I think he failed to develop it properly.

I agree 🥰
In my opinion the best interpretation of Papillon ever. Demus is a genius in Schumann. He really captures "die innere Stimme" hidden behind the notes.
V is the most beautiful piece. Short, delicate and mysterious.

I can't describe how beautiful this is with words. Gotta start practicing this wonderful piece!

+Ken Busch Isn't the vertical wedge marcato? To "mark" or accentuate the note.
