The way of the Geisha offers Japanese women a path to mastery and at the peak of this mountain stands Beauty. The envious squint up into her heights with evil eyes, deploring the chasm that stands between them as an injustice.

I really like your accent! I hope you bring it back to the new videos. 😊 I also appreciate your somewhat unusual opinion, at least as far as English speaking documentaries etc about geisha go, in that it's not worshipful and, your being Japanese, it isn't presented as "exotic" and "mysterious" like how westerners tend to see it.

do geisha only accept male customers? if they do accept female customers, do they change the way the interact? i understand that a woman wouldn't have had the status or money to afford the company of a geisha in the past, but that's not the case now-a-days.

Wow! Thank you so much for the traditions - History of the Geisha. Very educational. I want to better educate myself in this tradition. Not be a Geisha. Geisha have to remain Japanese only. Here in the USA. We study about different cultures and their traditions. Japan Geisha believe it or not. This will help me in telling those that think they know and basically put them on the spot. It tells me/ They only know by what they hear. Not by what they learn..

There have actually been a lot of foreign geisha in the past. One of the recent most well known ones was Geisha Kimicho who was Caucasian and from Missouri! ^^ There have also been Chinese women practicing as Geisha, Korean, Hispanic, and so on ^^ So Geisha are definitely not only Japanese, however you do have to train to be a geisha within Japan, there's no way for Geisha to actually practice and be authentic outside of Japan

This is a poor video full of inaccuracies and whoever made it has never talked to geisha or spent time in an ochaya. This video is made with short clips from other videos taken off CZcams.
The usual stereotype of geisha being subservient is laughable as usual. Why would a woman pay to be subservient when it would be easy to just become a bar hostess? No training is required to be a bar hostess. They set their own hours and make a ton of money just drinking and talking with men.
Contrary to what they say, you can't just call up a teahouse and book a geisha. Don't believe me? Try right now. No matter who you are, you'll be turned away.
Ochaya have a strict policy of no first time guests.
To visit a teahouse or ochaya, you must be specially invited by an existing customer. The proprietress will trust the judgement of her good customers.
Ochaya are exclusive. The idea of patrons even slightly affiliated with the underworld is also preposterous. Those in the underworld are a totally different group if Japanese society and are a seedy group that geiko or maiko wouldn't be caught dead talking to. Yakuza members are often involved with hostess bars, not geisha. Ask around.
The geisha world is the only group run only by women for men. It's also a place where women can become financially independent. It's one of the few places where having a child out of wedlock has no social stigma.
Unlike wives in Japan, geishas are witty and have no problem talking to men. Wives are more sedate with their opinions.
In making conversation, the geisha are smart and give as good as they get when No geisha would tolerate rudeness nor would the proprietress of the teahouse. A rude or crude customer will not be asked back.

@Shawn Clark +++++ Absolutely agree with you. I can also add that including pictures of henshin, or tourists dressed up as maiko, (8:44, 12:25) into a documentary on geisha makes a very poor impression.
9:02 It’s not that maiko “can’t afford” going to hairdresser’s each day, it’s that they don’t need it. The hairstyle will last almost a week and sleeping on a takamakura is a part of their demanding and hard training.
10:25 Maiko do get paid. Most of their income will go to the okasan who will then pay for their expenses; besides, they get tips from customers which they may give to the okasan in order to pay the debt or use them for ordering custom-made kanzashi etc. Comparing this system to a student loan… Gosh.
11:13 That’s an absolute lie. Maiko can quit any time they want, and they don’t have to pay off their debt. As huge a blow as it is for the okiya, they just let the girl go. Being a maiko is not slavery.
Those allegations that the girls seek “attention they are lacking at home” in the karyukai or that they apply to become a maiko because of the “need for a strict hierarchy” is absolutely baseless, I don’t even want to comment on that. One only needs to watch a couple of decent documentaries (like Real Geisha Real Women or more recent documentaries like those about Fukunori or Ichihiro) to understand the real motivation behind the decision to become a maiko.
13:20 Geiko are not apprentices anymore as long as they’ve had their erikae. Nevertheless, they continue to have dance and shamisen lessons regardless of their rank and experience until they quit.
I also have problems with the name of the video. The life of a geiko/maiko is definitely hard but in no way is it “dark”. This word has a connotation of “being connected to the illegal activities” or may invoke a common misconception of geisha with prostitutes.
I see no owner of photos/videos given credit, are they even aware that their images and clips have been used?

@@annet4611 I was pretty much thinking the same thing. I don't know anything about the actual profession, but even if everything in this video were true, I see nothing "dark" about this. Not any harder or darker than any other hard-working apprenticeship, training and eventual mastery profession.
