NEC M300X LCD Projector Repair/Diagnosis

  • This NEC M300X has a weird problem where it will shut down after some time or right away for no obvious reason. I suspected and confirmed that it's because of the Dynamic Iris assembly. Turns out the nylon gear cracked from the heat. The customer decided against repairing it but left it with me to do what I want. I may see about repairing the gear rather than dropping $100 on a new Iris assembly. What do you want to see me do? Replace the assembly or repair the gear?

    DUDE!!!! SO glad you posted this!!!! I just followed step by step and totally repaired my NEC projector! It was the dynamic ratio. I took the motor out and discovered something was impeding its motion. Hit it with some 99% alcohol then with a q-tip, applied some lubricant to the springs and gears. Put it back together and works every time!!

    okay... I actually found this projector model out on the street. brought it home and plugged it in and the lights work and it even came on. when it did come on the menu came up and it was toggling through the options with out me even pressing the buttons. it powers on (if I press the button hard enough..) and then abruptly turns off and the "status" indicator light will go between green and blue and yellow. I shook it and nothing is rattling on the inside so I don't want to throw this away - it looks as if it still has some life left to it. I already have a fully-functional projector but its good to have another. From my description, what could you tell me from your expertise? my last resort is to get it serviced however if I can fix it myself, that 'll be better!
    You said something about "cleaning" it and that usually resolves most of the issues..

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  Před 3 lety

      These tend to have the iris module fail. There is that little nylon gear that dries out and cracks. Since it is nylon, you cant glue it with normal CA or epoxy. The Iris assemblies are pretty easy to change though. That is what I end up doing on most of these. I ended up with 3 of these MX300s and they all needed the iris assembly changed. The cost was pretty reasonable.
      Double check your error codes against the manual. The flashing of the LEDs will be in a specific order that will indicate the problem. Sometimes the lamp timer runs out but since yours starts and immediately stops, I bet its the iris assembly.

      Hi Tom, I ended up replacing the entire Iris. There is a later video with that in it. Replacing the gear was more hassle than it was worth. The motor is kind of built to only go together. You 'could' replace the gear but I would be skeptical of its longevity.

      I use a company in China called Time Electronics. GYDZ@Timeprojector.com Be sure to include a picture of the iris assembly. You probably had the gear on the little drive motor split. That will cause the whole assembly to jam up. Replacing it with a working assembly is really the only option I know of. The iris assembly is not repairable as they sit.

    Hey FixitFrank, I have an NEC Projector M260X, I have an issue regarding the status light. I can't seem to figure out what is causing this since everything looks normal when I opened up the projector.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  Před 5 lety

      Six blinks means lamp error. Sometimes lamps will fail early. Depending on many variables such as ambient air temperature or the amount of times turned on and off. There is a lesser chance that the color wheel is sticking. That will prevent the lamp from starting and give you a lamp error. I would try another lamp first as it's the easiest first step. Does it try to start? As in so you hear the fans spinup and after a few min it's flashing 6 times?

      @FixitFrank  Před 3 lety

      If the motor is still attached, it is preventing the springback. However you probably have a bad Iris gear. That is super common on these and likely the main issue with all of them. Every M300X I have seen has had a bad gear on that iris motor. Its a Nylon gear so gluing it isn't an option. I have considered having metal gears made for replacement but I am not sure if there is a good enough market since these are kind of old and iris assemblies are still available.
      You can contact Time Projector for replacement Iris assemblies. Gydz@timeprojectorlamp.com. Just be sure to send a pic of your old iris assembly. That is probably the noise you are hearing when you shake it. The iris shutters hitting each other as it shakes.

    I work for the Toronto District School Board. We have several schools with multiple whiteboards that use the NEC NP-M300XS and many of them have the split spur gear on the iris motor shaft. Our main projector vendor wants over $600 to repair them. Personally I believe NEC should cover this repair as it appears to be the ONLY reason these projectors are failing, but it seems unlikely they’ll do this. Were you ever able to source this part?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  Před 5 lety

      Hi Karl, That is incredibly frustrating to hear. I did look it up and I think it was around $90 for the assembly. As far as gluing it, I did try. It seems to be made of nylon which doesn't glue very well. Even if it did glue it would probably break again. Replacing it is the best option. $600 for repair is ridiculous in my opinion. I have to check with a few vendors but let me see what I can find. If you have a fleet, then its worth finding a source for parts. Hey Calum! From the symptoms, I would open it back up and go over the wires. To be clear you have the status light turning on and off(0.5 sec on and 2.5 sec off?)
      I wonder if you have something partially plugged in? Another possibility is a bent/damaged tab on the door that hits the switch(isn't hitting the switch). If its your personal projector, you could safely solder bypass the lamp door. Those small pin-switches tend to break pretty easily if you have that type.

      @FixitFrank  Před 5 lety +1

      Hi Tom! Did you have any overheating issues prior to the iris change? If not, I would go over the fans and make sure a wire or something isnt blocking them from spinning. Another idea is to test the tachometer leads on the fans and see if one is not reporting the RPMs. There is a lamp blower fan that is kind of buried and you may not be able to hear it. Check over your wires first(make sure they are plugged into where they should be) and then look to checking the tach leads. The projector isnt running long enough to truly get too hot so I suspect its a fan not reporting or not spinning. That will happen immediately and shut it down in less than a minute of the lamp igniting.

      @FixitFrank  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi! There are a few possible causes. There is a mains fuse. There is also possibly a one shot thermal fuse but since this is very similar to the m300 I think it's probably a mains fuse.
      Sometimes they put resettable thermal bimetal sensors. They have a red pin you push on to reset. It would be near or on the lamp area. Once you take the top off the mains fuse should be not too far from the power plug. It's right by the mains power switch.
      When you change the fuse(if it's bad) I would recommend checking the mov's or just put your meter in ohms across the power input to see if anything on the front end is shorted. Probably not but it's worth a check.

      @@FixitFrank Thank you Frank. I connected it via LAN but no recordings. Fans are ok. Lamp new Ushio NSHA230Q. Power supply capacitors exchanged. But voltages on the POPW do not fit. I miss 15 and 17.5V. The others are lower than the default.
