See the Milwaukee and rivals from 1955 to 1978 covering the electrics, diesels and some lingering steam. Plenty of runby and trackside views of a vanished way of life in the mountain districts. Marvel at the GE Boxmotors, Bipolars and "Little Joes" and visit a number of locations. We review the history and technical aspects of the Milwaukee and how they fit in with their rivals and allies. The end of electric railroading and eventually the Pacific Extension is covered in the era of great mergers and changes. Railfan & Railroad comments As with all Charles Smiley tapes I have seen, there is a lot of added value beyond just showing transferred, railfan-shot film footage. This tape is a good choice for Milwaukee Road fans and for those who want a primer on an important piece of railroad history between Chicago and Seattle.-Tom Kelcec Features:Seattle, Tacoma Chicago Rocky Mountains Deer Lodge switching Substation views Electric Diesel & Steam Competing Lines

Superb Presentation. I Was A Commercial Truck Driver And RR Enthusiast. I Would Stop And See All The Old Preserved Equipment All The Time. As as Child, I Was Facinated By Electric Locomotives.

I felt the same way in my hometown in queens,NY we had new haven electric freight trains humming down the track under the overhead cantery, sad they de electrified the line for diesels in 1969

Excellent video! When I was younger I wanted to model the Milwaukee Road, but information was scarce here in Australia. Thanks for posting this!

It's sad to see some of the old engines becoming obsolete.

Interesting that "disappear" is the last word here, as the first thing I ever learned about the sad side of railroading when still quite young, is that the Pacific Extension had disappeared. I felt cheated, since my favorite "childood" book was "Milwaukee Road West", by Patrick C. Dorin, I believe..

I have the book. Patrick Dorin covered the East. Charles and Dorothy Wood covered the West. Noel T. Holley's book on the Milwaukee Electrics is an extensive look with specific information on electrification and dieselization of the Pacific Extension. There are rosters, detailed drawings of catenary setup and of substations. A real treasure trove for anyone wanting to model the Milwaukee Road. Included are all the types of electric locomotives with their classifications and phases of each type of locomotive.

@@renegadetenor there were actually two printings of "The Milwaukee Electrics" by Noel T. Holley. First printing was in 1989 and 2nd run was in 2000. There may be a few still floating about of the 2nd run. I have both printings. The first printing was one of my very first books on the Milwaukee. I was 17 years old and I treasured it! The 2nd printing is great because there are actually some new stories from former employees in it. I would love to model the Milwaukee one day. However, I plan to model the Chehalis Sub south of Tacoma where I once lived as a child from 1974 to 1983. Lots of very fond memories.

The Milwaukee Road was a truly visionary railroad, particularly in its use of electric traction. Unfortunately, it did so at a time when 3KV DC was all that was then technically possible, meaning that the catenary wire was large, heavy and expensive and the sub-stations were of very short range, thus, many were required over typical long distances. This was well before the mid-1950's pioneering work of Nouvion (of the SNCF) that led to the now universal adoption of the 25KV AC electrical feed. It is unfortunate that, although electric traction allowed tunnel operation without the need for tunnel ventilation systems, the use of tunnels was not retained for the few areas with the largest ruling grades. In Switzerland, massive tunnels of well over 10km long were build (and are still being built) with the help of the national government in order to provide a long term solution that the Country is still benefiting from. 2024/04/11. 3k wasn't all that was possible. 11kv at 25hz was the other option and being tested on the east coast.
And had they taken up GE offer to close the gap, rebuild the system and get 45-60 new electric locos the system would have lasted. GE was even willing to finance it over 20-30 years.

The little joes were originally built for the Soviet Union. After WWll, cold war animosity stopped the transaction. Milwaukee Road was made an offer that they couldnt refuse.

It should be noted that re-gauging of the trucks was then required from the soviet 1520 mm gauge to the American 1435 mm gauge. 2024/04/11. Ontario, Canada.
