- My 1,500th kite video, like several recently, had to be edited from old video footage during the coronavirus lockdown. I hope to be flying again soon.

My grandma used to make box kites for us kids when we were young. She used balsa sticks and newspaper. They always flew ... much easier to launch and keep aloft than regular kites. 👍
A good memory to have. I don't think many people make their own kites these days, except those who are really into kite design.
I watched the first 500, then we got to 1000 and now 1500. Time really does fly when you are doing something you enjoy. Thanks for all the pleasure your kite videos bring and of course the rare occasions we have shared some sky together. Looking forward to even more when we are soon allowed out to play.
Won't be long now, Carl!
I have found many Gomberg kited to be of exceptionally cheap construction, despite their high asking price. It’s too bad as they have some unique designs, but little effort was made to use quality materials or reinforce weak points. Thanks for sharing your box collection. I like especially like the ones with tails, not something I often see on a box kite
Gomberg's kites were always made without prioritizing quality, and I've often pointed out their shortcomings in my videos. Often the flying characteristics weren't great either. But a lot of their products were interesting, as you say, and we shall miss them now the company is closing down. Their tails and line laundry in particular are items not available elsewhere.
One of my favorite box kites that I didn't make is a Tri-D Box that was made by Sam Houston for the silent auction at the Junction (Texas) Kite Workshop & it's features are there is not a single stitch on the rip-stop as it's totally taped together which was all the craze in the 90's & it has the Junction Campus Origami Hummingbird logo on it also made in the "NoSew" technique! Back then I paid $300 for it & I was bidding against Martin Lester, Jose Sainz and many others!
That's some competition! The Tri-D is a good design - I have two Chinese versions which fly brilliantly in very light wind. See: czcams.com/video/m6SKNh8QDRU/video.html .
@@JimNicholls I think they let me "win" that auction because there was so many other great things on the tables that day! LoL
Hats off to your 1,500 video Jim. I’m looking forward to many more. Quite the impressive collection of beautiful Box Kites.
I don't know about "many" more, but I'm hoping there will be a few, at least. I don't fly box kites often, but should make more use of them.
Thank you for all the videos. This help me to stay at home. We have spring in Germany and I cant go fly a kite. This year all my kites still stay in storage and wait for better times. All festivals and meetings up to october are canceld.
I still wait for your next 1500 videos.
Stay healthy!
I'm glad you enjoy the videos. If I live until October I shall be 80 years old, so I don't think I shall make 1,500 more videos, but I shall try to add a few more before I finish.
I love the collection you select in this #1500 vid. As mentioned, the music is perfect. I don't own a box, but may add one in time~ Very nicely done, Jim!
You'll certainly have plenty to choose from if you decide to buy a box, Mark. I'd recommend something fairly simple and easy to fly, as some of the more complex ones look good but are not such good performers.
@@JimNicholls I finally got Sojourn in the sky after an adjustment and that's a nice kite in good wind. There's my box...
Hi Jim, thank you for continuing to put up the kite videos helping to keep me sane while in lock down
I hear your lockdown is going on a lot longer. Here we are moving today to a slightly more relaxed lockdown, which means I should be able to get out and fly. Of course, we're heading into winter now, so the weather is a crucial factor.
wow love it... iwant to learn how to do that
Great video as always. I've had my eye on that red 10 diamond kite but couldn't tell if it would be a good flyer. You've convinced me to add it to the fleet!
It's always good to have a selection of different kites. Have fun!
Congratulations on the 1500 milestone. I have a treczok cody, one of my favorites. I have made box kites oit of Polystyrene ceiling tiles, tbey flew reasonably well but were very fragile. Keep safe, keep filming.
That's an interesting use of materials - the only kites I've seen made of that were ones utilising the Magnus effect (of which the Prism Flip is a more conventional example - see czcams.com/video/oJBUsAXba5w/video.html ).
This is one of your best videos ever! I'd like to get a Cody kite someday. But I do like the spinners. Thanks Jim! Great video!
Thanks, Dewey. The Cody is a nice kite, but a bit over-rated simply because of its history, I think. I sold my Treczok's one because I almost never flew it.
Congratulations! Those were some swell looking boxes. And it was not too long..loved your choice of music with it..some spots looked very well in sync with the waltz. Very nice..
I hope you were dancing to it, Priscilla! It looks as if I might get out to fly mid week, weather permitting.
Jim Nicholls I will keep my fingers crossed 🤞 for you ,Jim...lol- I was chair dancing🤓
Great kites, perfect music. What a way to get to 1,500 videos. Well done Jim.
Thanks, Michael. I'd have preferred to get out and put on a display, but the lockdown came at the wrong time. With luck I'll have a kite or two in the air this coming week.
@@JimNicholls Let's hope so. A gray day here, but did spend some time outside.
Cody and Revolver are my favorite box kites😊
Hi Mustafa, I hope things are not too bad in Turkey and you can get back to your studying soon, with time for kite flying (and making) as well.
Nowadays Turkey is better than,at the weekends there are forbidden go out in Turkey,we are staying at the home...We are okey
Kite making is very problem now for me,but at the evenings I am flying my kites on a windy days.I have a free place near the my home.I am going kiting alone, only my self.
I hope we will back normal days soon and I will go on kite days
Stay healty...
Good to know you are able to fly. I hope to get out this week after five weeks of staying at home.
I love all your videos
Thank you! There are rather a lot of them. I've just uploaded number 1,885.
Wow theres some great examples there, I really like the revolver 6 sided kites.
I just received my 30" rainbow box from skydog kites it is my first box kite and looks great in the sky 😃
I hope you have a lot of fun with it!
What a beautiful ballet of box kites. I'm a newbie, so am wondering if they take more time to assemble and disassemble than other types of kites. I hope that you have a crew of experienced people helping you with that! Congrats on your 1,500th video. I'm hooked on watching them! (from Teresa in northern California)
Hi Teresa, Yes, box kites usually have more spars and take a little more time to assemble and to pack away. That's one reason why I don't often fly them. I almost never have any help flying my kites, which is partly bad but also partly good, as it means I've no-one else to blame if things go wrong or bits are lost or broken! I'm now on my 1,612th video, so you have a lot to catch up on! I hope you have a lot of fun with your kite-flying - that's what it's all about.
@@JimNicholls ⚠️ God has said in the Quran:
🔵 { O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become righteous - ( 2:21 )
🔴 [He] who made for you the earth a bed [spread out] and the sky a ceiling and sent down from the sky, rain and brought forth thereby fruits as provision for you. So do not attribute to Allah equals while you know [that there is nothing similar to Him]. ( 2:22 )
🔵 And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our Servant [Muhammad], then produce a surah the like thereof and call upon your witnesses other than Allah, if you should be truthful. ( 2:23 )
🔴 But if you do not - and you will never be able to - then fear the Fire, whose fuel is men and stones, prepared for the disbelievers.( 2:24 )
🔵 And give good tidings to those who believe and do righteous deeds that they will have gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow. Whenever they are provided with a provision of fruit therefrom, they will say, "This is what we were provided with before." And it is given to them in likeness. And they will have therein purified spouses, and they will abide therein eternally. ( 2:25 )
⚠️ Quran
wow, i love it
Thank you. This is just one of 1,669 videos that I have now.
1500! congrats, and does this number include all the ones you made for ITW and others?
Thanks. No, Derrick, it's just the ones on this channel, and then only the kite ones, not the other odd items that appear occasionally.
@@JimNicholls I haven't watched them all, close though. I enjoyed this one, kept expecting to see Clark's Crystal, but I did see some I own, like the cheap Cody, a great little kite, wings flap a bit if the wind is big. I also have a set of Go Fly a Kite Mission Box kites, great deal that was! I like the looks of the Sojourn, very handsome kite, looked at that but bought Hoffman's sparkling box instead, the jury is still out on that decision. Lets see I have three Prism Triads, they are a box kite as well wouldn't you say?
Yes, I'd say the Triad is a box. The Clarke's Crystal was in the box kite video I uploaded a few days ago.
I knew 1500 would be a great video! Loved the music which added to the grandeur of the flights! Thanks for your contributions to kite flying all around the world!
Steve Fisher You can thank Mr Tchaikovsky for the music, Steve. I don't know if he ever flew a kite, but several of his pieces seem to fit very well.
Grats on 1500 vids. I'm flying ... right now! Vid later maybe.
Lucky you! I hope to get a chance about mid-week - if I can remember how to do it after weeks of lockdown!
