This series of Reith Lectures should be compulsory viewing for all "A Level /High School" students in the UK , US ,and other democracies In these lectures ,Sumption brilliantly describes the (legitimate) roles of elected legislatures, and (Supreme) Courts , in democracies, and the dangers to those democracies , when one encroaches into the other's domain . And in particular ,when small groups of (unelected ) Supreme Judges , begin making decisions, which rightly should be made by their own, democratically elected legislatures .

Thomas Sowell wrote that there are no solutions, only trade-offs. Lord Sumption's lecture is a meditation on this theme.
