    Hearing Dan talk a bit about how the speaker could be in and out of phase makes me realize just how much I don't know. I really enjoy these little tidbits. It'd be cool to have a few mini lessons about some of these more technical issues like phase, grounding, impedance, ohms and all that jazz.

    Y E S ! ! Mick's point about Paul Gilbert is spot the hell on! I was big into so called "Shredders" in my early days of playing, but Paul is one of the few I've really cared about since. He is a great songwriter with flawless playing and a sense of fun that no one else really has. He's still doing awesome stuff to this day.

    Just to add something in the year 2023, I tried out one of the newer model deja vibes because I liked the form factor more than the old cream enclosure (which I have). The old one sounds WAY different, and better to me, than the newer models. The new models can be tweaked much easier, allowing you to shape the swell to your liking which is great, but I was never able to get it close to the sound of the old one. The newer ones have more of the "seasick" sound, while the old one has more of the "chewy" throb. The newer ones can get a faster more extreme sound, but the old ones get that organic sweet spot that sounds like its breathing. Almost like it has an asymmetric swell. That old deja-vibe is still the best sounding vibe I have found.

Sure enough, I checked my watch list minutes later and it had already been bought up. Never underestimate your influence, gentlemen! With great pedals comes great responsibility!

  • @fretts
    @fretts Před 7 lety +22

    One difference between 'Vibes is that some of them are true to the original in that the pulsation is lopsided like a heartbeat, others have "fixed" that and produce a very even up and down sweep. Hendrix and Trower aficionados will want the classic heartbeat like the Fulltone and the Voodoo Labs MicroVibe. The Mojo has it too but maybe to a lesser degree. The Nu-Vibe obviously lets you get any waveform you like, including that heartbeat. Dunlop, despite owning the rights to use the Uni-Vibe name have not bothered to recreate the sound of its namesake. You don't much notice the difference at moderate to fast speed, but it really shows up at slow settings.

    A used MXR uni-vibe is around $85. The rest of those pedals are in the $250 to $450 range for used. That's an important little detail for the average home player. If you're just a bedroom player the MXR will work fine and leave extra money for other gear. However, the Monterey is more bang for the buck so you can almost compare it to the cost of buying two or three individual pedals.

  • @Matt-rk3de
    @Matt-rk3de Před 7 lety +2

    The Keeley vibe's tone/playability sounded the best, to me. I used to have one. But I found the fuzz's volume very difficult to dial in with my rig and other pedals. I think it's because of how it's designed to stack with the modulation, being a workstation. It got to the point where I was literally only using the pedal for the vibe effect. So I sold it. I now have a sunface and vibe machine, which is an epic duo. But I do miss the Keeley vibe. It was always very easy to dial in and get good tone from. The Drybell's numerous trim pots and tweaking daunts me on certain days. I am big fan of one knob pedals. There's not a lot you can mess up. If Keeley made this ^ vibe in a stand alone pedal, I'm sure it would be very successful.

  • @TimothyPage06

    I do think the MXR gets a bad rep. And of course, If you sit it next to a bunch of real (photo cell) vibes, it doesn't sound as rich or as warm and it kind of lacks the bottom end of other vibe pedals. (From what I understand it's a tweaked phaser circuit rather than a 'real' vibe.) Where it shines is in a modern live mix where you don't want as much low end and need a bit of midrange accentuation to cut through when you turn it on. It's amazing for doubling lines with another guitar player or a horn player as well, because it keeps you in the same 'tonal range' as the guitar regularly is while adding some intrigue.
    Might not be as cool or rich as classic vibes but it definitely has it's place for utility.

    @bumblefritz Před 5 lety +2

    Of all of the Vibes I've tried, including the Drybell... The Deja Vibe (cream) is my favorite (as of now).
    It seems that a lot of other vibes tend to have a sweet spot and when you turn the depth up you lose note definition and when you turn the rate or depth down it's just too dark. The Deja seems to remain clear wherever you have the knobs set while still having the right throb and watery, lopsided warble.

    One thing you should try if you haven’t is to put an actual vibrato pedal such as the vibrato side of these in the effects loop of a delay. When the straight pitch modulation mixes with the dry of the guitar and sounds freaking epic especially when sustaining fewer notes! Idk if lots of people do this or not but I like it!

      @JaimeNoro Před 4 lety +1

      Yeah, I have one too. But it has its problems, the most annoying one is that it clips whenever you use something a little hotter than normal single coils. In this day and age, that's a bummer. And I feel it's a little on the thin side as well (shaves off some of the low mids), but that works well when you use distortion and fuzz to keep things from falling apart.

  • @Stratollac

    Great show as always. I found this particularly pleasing because it confirms my love of the Mojo Vibe. Like most people, I find it difficult to compare lots of competing pedals and make decisions based on research. I ended up with a Mojo many years ago, and I've never experienced a second of regret about that acquisition. Someday, I'd like to add the Sweetsound Ultra Vibe as well, as even Bob Sweet himself felt it had a different, and to his ears better, sound. Then again, I'm not made of money, so it may be a pipe dream.

Valeton make a couple of `Dapper 4` `multi-effects` similar to the Tech 21 Fly Rigs which are surprisingly good for the money. I agree with Mick absolutely re Paul Gilbert. I have a collection of Vibes, all five being used here, a '68 Shi-ei Uni-vibe all the way to my current favorite, Earthquaker Devices "The Depths". Vibes tend to drop off volume and highs. The Depths has controls for mids/ highs, and a control for low end to tailor it to single coils of humbuckers. It also sounds great in the FX loop. Put the vibe before distortion/boost.

    I'll second the request for a demo of the TC Viscous Vibe. Aside from the toneprint option which you guys have demonstrated the awesomeness of, it's got a throb-speed increase option when you hold down the switch -- it'll ramp up the speed. It doesn't have a full expression pedal, but it does nod to some of that on-the-fly setting changeability.

What I figured with my Fulltone MDV-1 is that I have to play "loud" to get the best out of the effect. Of course it's always better to play loud, but in this case the "throb" gets more intensiv with the higher volume.

    One of the best vids ever on your show! Loved it, laughed a lot, 55 minutes of joy with my favorite modulation effect. Sounding like a fanboy (which I am...), because of your show I am just stocking up parts and consuming every DIY pedal vid here on YT to build a few by myself to understand all about those "fiddling with my transistors". I would love to hear more of that "It's a germanium fuzz" or other things about the parts used by the pedals and their influence on sound. I think Dan will know a lot about this stuff.

    I know I would appreciate it greatly and hopefully some others but could there be an episode where you guys shootout the real analog modulation effects compared to the mobius or show how to get as close as possible to the originals? I know for people who want to condense their boards to a mobius, there aren't many good tutorials/all in one comparisons and I just thought you guys could be the ones to do it. Love the videos, keep doing what you're doing :)

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  Před 7 lety +12

      +Aaron Hayes We could certainly try. Answered this earlier to a point, but it's kinda the same as with real tape echoes and emulations. There's quite a gap between the sounds. Whether that matters to you is entirely personal (not least that you may well prefer the emulations!)
      They don't sound the same (which is not to say worse), but they are much less expensive, much more practical and reliable and may well be just as inspiring musically, depending on how and what you play. Perhaps we should try it. Möbius vs our four favourite old-school modulators.
      Thanks for watching!

    I love vibe so I'm really enjoying this video! The Deja-Vibe v2 and v3 models are built into an expression pedal style foot controller like the Dunlop Roto Vibe. I thought I would mention this only because the question of using an expression pedal came up. I believe that for the DejaVibe mini used in this video the speed knob is designed extra large so that you can (try to) control the speed knob with your foot. I have the v2 version and love it.
    I hope you do a video on Octave Fuzz soon. If you do, please make sure to include a real Roger Mayer Octavia since he created the effect and still makes them. I'd also love to see a Dan Armstrong Green Ringer (or clone) included in an octave fuzz video.

    I don't know why everyone worries about Trower and Hendrix allegedly using a different order. They didn't ...both were vibe into an overdrive/heavily overdriven amp. Yes Hendrix used a fuzz first which as the video shows really needs to go in front of the vibe or the sound drops out, but as the video also shows, going into an overdriven amp really improved the sound. The fuzz alone got better going into overdriven amp. Fuzz and OD are really to different birds and we shouldn't lump then together and say that Hendrix and Trower had a different pedal order. It confuses the issue. The real question is whether Trower ever use a fuzz after a vibe? I suspect not. I seem to recall reading bridge of sighs is vibe in treble booster into cranked Marshall.

      The Depths - that's the one I have, I never see it on anyone's board. I like it, but it still doesn't sound as good as the Deja Vibe to me. I'm a huge Trower fan, and that's the one he uses apparently.

      @robertbossart Před 7 lety +1

      The Depths has more knobs to tweek the sound, but it's not a vibe in the classic manner. If you are looking for the Hendrix/Trower-vibesound you have to get one of the classics like the Deja.
