- Directed by Flora Lichtman and Katherine Wells for The Adaptors, this film takes an in-depth look at a community living off the grid in Taos, New Mexico. Residents' homes are made out of natural and recycled materials and use solar and wind power for energy.
The community's founder, American architect Michael Reynolds, built his first Earthship house with beer cans in 1972 and has been dedicated to sustainable living for four decades.

Thanks to Mike, I look at garbage as a gold mine . Now when I see bottles and cans, I see projects and free money. I also love Mikes cooling system and water recycling. He is an amazing person. Thanks Mike. You created a recycling monster
I like Earthships myself. But I think it's only honest and important to day that none of the individual components that make an Earthship were invented by Mike Reynolds, except for the tire walls. Mike did a great job curating ideas from all over to use in a single design. But it should be clear that's what he did. He didn't come up with all of these ideas independently.
I lived near there in the late '90's and was graciously given a tour of several of the homes. Not only are they beautiful, they are extremely comfortable and efficient. Certainly wish I could have one someday.
i bought my house 20 years ago and i owe more now than when i bought it. these are fantastic ideas lets make houses instead of landfills.
Most of the value is in the land not in the house itself, so you'd still have to raise enough capitol and purchase land to build. Might not be too different with EarthShip but it would be cheaper as you be saving on bills, etc...
The landfills won't fit into houses. Even if EVERYONE did this you would still have to have both.
I like this guy's logic and philosophy. There are people who are hellbent on going and being right or green to build when it just makes more sense to be resourceful and to use your surroundings whether they're commonly used or not.
Interesting short film. The whole idea of the Earthship is unusual in a sense, but it has the potential to transform our way of thinking about conservation and world betterment.

The ingenuity of our species never ceases to amaze me.
Belief in government and the idea that we need to depend on costly infrastructure stifles creativity that should be common to all. These earthships would allow people to live practically anywhere. For example, all water is harvested from rain and snowfall, so no draining of Lake Mead which is getting dangerously low.
~ My Earthship would be a friggin' mansion by now, if I went the beer can route!
We love living in our Earthship as well as creating videos about life off the grid.
I think is much more worth watching and helping building these homes , instead of watching stupid shows on tv! It is amazing what people say when they see the garbage warrior series and the earthship documentery! They think is amazing stuff that will bring our building potential way off the grid! I also think that is absolutely amazing that I can get FREE building materials ! It helps that other countries there are places where people can build whatever they want and nobody can tell you what to do with your poo! I showed this to a neighbour that lives close to me, and he also said is mind-blowingly cool! Next thing I will work in is a self sustaining ' LOO', so that I don't have to do any cleaning or paying someone to clean it!

I agree with his staements.
I find they are useful for Emotional Health for some people, but they can also stifle innovation. Sometimes the needs we had previously or not the needs we have now.
I'm sold on it! I'm going to build One for a elderly friend of mine and ask him if I can build myself one in exchange for building his! :)

i am so jealous and envy these people. living the dream, a dream which is translated in peace with everyone and everything. not only that they are giving back to community, by helping nature.
I live in Cyprus a small island that has temperatures like Australia and even more. we have no earth ships here but i am trying to start the movement since not only nature needs it but people here too.
Is any one willing to give me some basics tips or point me where to look? Like is there a book or a place i can find information on anything that concerns earth ships? like a 'guide book' per say?

Did you build an earthship yet? Just keep watching YT videos, and build a small one if you don't have enough resources or laborers. I want to build a mini earthship which only uses less than 200 tires.

The only question I have is the chemicals leaching from the tires. In Europe, some countries have banned burying tires and in the US they have to kept above ground (on some sort of platform so they are not touching the earth). Any response to this? All the rest of the recycling sounds terrific!
I never heard of the platform idea, and I have watched quite a few videos. Maybe it depends on where you live in the US.

Yes they have jobs and cars. They get gas at the gas station. Taos, NM is a few miles down the road. You can rent an earthship and check it out for a while.

We've been inspired by earthship Biotecture and so interested in its development in certain climatic conditions and the enhancement of it's longevity. To that end, we would appreciate were anyone with relative experience help us with answer to any of the three questions as follows:
1. Google estimates the longevity of tires is anywhere between 50 to 80 years before total decay. Does this mean that an earthship could only last that long, given that tires are the predominant material in earthship?
2. Still on strength and longevity of tires, does tires get weaker when exposed to water, as in building with it in a swampy environment?
3. In the interest of tires strengthening and preventing ground water pollution, could the following measures harm or help tires longevity and environmental protection:
A. Wrapping the tires in plastic materials
B. Painting the tires with coal tar mixed with kerosene.

I'm no expert, but I think that since the tires are at a stable temperature, completely sealed that they would last indefinitely. If you are building in a swampy area you would take measures to prevent tires from being exposed to moisture from underneath of wherever. I think you are too worried. Can we trust Google or the fact checkers anyways if there is an anti-earthship agenda in place?
PS! I can say goodbye to the bills in a few years can be totally independent of government of any kind!

These are great but, expensive and labor intensive. It costs about twice as much per sq ft as conventional construction. If you have the money it's a great idea.

Thanks. I was thinking moreso in a climate with snow and rain. I can see this would work in a desert as daytime temps are quite high so the house stores that heat and releases over the cold night. But would this work in someplace like Canada...
Anastasia Renaud taos NM is a high platau desert so in winter its freezing with lots of snow and rain......Im positive there are many earthships in Canada....it works as long as you get sun light during the day for example it wouldn't work well up in the artic circle where its dark for several months, but it would still work better than any other house design simply because of its passive solar, thermal mass design .....hope that helps

Great idea but it's soo dry there. Too bad you couldn't plant some palm trees and build some kind of an oasis right smack in the middle of town.

Garbage is free, land isn't.
Solar panels need to be replaced. I hope the water they're getting from the ground is upstream from the hole where the sewage is going.
+525Lines solar panels can last 30 years and there are solar panels still working after 50 years......... They collect water from the roof not the ground and there sewage is treated by bacteria and discharged into a plastic line botanical cell
