  • The most talked about passes in Northern England include Hardnott, Winlatter, Honister, Kirkstone, Buttertubs - all of which deserve a trip on their own but for pure riding & driving pleasure, none can compare with Hartside pass near Alston
Whilst the hill top cafe no longer exists, it remains a popular meeting spot for all road enthusiasts ... and for a very good reason. You will enjoy either side of the pass and in any direction but uphill tends to be my personal favourite.

Love Hartside. Agree completely an absolutely phenomenal road. Just wondering what equipment you used to film the video stunning quality...?

Just gopro here 7 black slapped to front of the bike. Trick is to use image stabilisation at max resolution... and a sunny day helps 🤣

Excellent video. Thanks for uploading. That section of road is in my top 3 (which changes all the time). Other good roads in same area are Brough to Middleton-in-Teesdale, Middleton-in-Teesdale to Alston (either direction) and A6 from Penrith to Shap.

Fully agree - so many to choose from ! Hartside from either direction is great and always on my favourite route list.

Around 4 miles of the best biking road imaginable, i personally prefer going up from penrith side, can hit the corners a little harder when gravity is helping. I live around 30 miles from it and look forward to the challenge 3 or 4 times a year ( weather permitting) when i visit the lake district.

I like both directions for different reasons. For speed, definately up hill but going down has flowing bends with great views

Worth having a look at the Hartside Heroes CZcams channel. Lots of bikes come croppers on the final bend (6 minutes). And there was a flying Audi seen recently 😂. Great shame the cafe at the top burnt down. Yet to do it on my Lambretta!

Ive een hartside heroes channel and even starred in it 🤣. I've also seen a few accidents on hartside, so I tend keep one eye on other riders/drivers in case they're pushing beyond their limit. Good news is the cafe is returning - let's hope it captures the soul of the old cafe.

@@northernbackroadbiker I didn’t know the cafe was coming back - great news. I live in Whitley Bay, so it’s a great ride across.
