Why is My Shelby GT500 ILLEGAL in Europe?!

  • The Shelby GT500 is not sold in Europe, but does that make it illegal? We're on an adventure to the Southernmost point of the Continental US in Key West, FL, and discussing why the GT500 isn't available in the UK, and what I will need to do to import it.
The Shelby GT500 is the most brutal factory Ford Mustang, and a model that is not available officially in the UK or Europe for a host of reasons. However, that often causes confusion with people thinking that means it would be illegal to have in the UK at all, but that's not actually the case. Homologation, and private import, are different topics and very complicated.
For Ford to directly sell it from dealers, it would need to pass various homologation tests including emissions, sound, bodywork, lights and more, which would be a problem for this car. However, there are processes for most countries that enable the private individual import of a car, and the UK operates exactly this way as I did for both my Ford GT and SLS AMG Black Series. This means that a number of things will have to be changed in order to register it, but these are all things that can thankfully be done fairly easily when the time comes.
When exactly will that be? When am I going to bring the GT500 home to The Shmuseum? The plan at the moment is to be in the USA for the time of the Miami F1 and Gumball 3000 in May, then after that trip, to ship it over to London and go from there. Let's see if anything changes beforehand, but it will be amazing to have it finally with my GT and Heritage RS!
    Thanks for watching, Tim

For the wheels, perhaps you could order the ones from the standard version of the GT500. I'm not sure if Ford sells those directly to customers, but it's just one possibility among many. What do you think?

It's certainly an option to consider, or you could buy wheels from an independent company like BBS. I'm sure whatever you pick will work just fine. Performance wheels, these days, tend to be pretty well engineered for what they are. Beyond that, it just becomes a matter of aesthetics and personal preference.

    • @CaseyCollier
      @CaseyCollier Před 2 lety

Some people prefer to have their cars set up with only factory, OEM parts. I'm not stating that that's the way Tim would want his car, but I did suggest it as an option for him to consider. Of course, deals with independent wheel manufacturers could offer a better value, but that has nothing to do with what he personally wants for his car. It's ultimately his decision to make and it really just comes down to preference for these sorts of things. He has the money to pick any of those options, so I don't think cost would really factor in all that much.

To make sure anything that could go wrong can be address here state side fast and easy. youl have a ton of time and cost if your need to get stuff done for that car overseas. seriously. if i were you , ide get that thing back to showroom status before it making that trip. AND ide stock up replacement parts. the common stuff youd figure would get damaged in a minor fender bender. Least we forget that no ordinary mustang.

In South Africa we are allowed to add do the full Shelby conversion as it is recognised as a factory approved add-on to the car. It costs about $100k for the full car. What we did for baffling was to fit a long silencer, similar to what we use for motorcycles in place of one of the pipes on both sides with a cutover valve. Similar to what you have on the Merc GT. It does not affect the performance of the car. If you want the full roar you just enable the second pipe.

It's considered a used car at this point so importing it the rules are considerably more relaxed than trying to sell it new. Ford could have made the changes but it would have been priced higher than they would have wanted to sell it. In the US it's a relatively cheap performance ride being under $100K which is part of it's appeal. Also, once you do have it registered wherever you need it there's little to stop you from undoing the mods, since again, it's a used car that you can do whatever you want to it.
My 2 cents - if you're here in the US so many times you might want to consider just keeping it here. It's only one car and I'm sure it won't break the bank having it safe somewhere with another car buddy!

Maybe you should consider leaving the Mustang in Florida for a few years and then selling it in the US as well. As you mentioned you have business in Florida and the F1 race is scheduled to be in Miami for years to come. Additionally the Aventura, Sunny Isles and South Beach areas are great for car spotting. Car spotting here is so crazy that when I visit the Mayfair area of the UK its hard to be impressed because many of the same cars are around these areas in Florida and you see some pretty rare cars in Knightsbridge and Mayfair. Also, I am sure many fans/exotic car owners would love it if you did a few meet ups in the Miami area.

I'll be doing the same trip from Miami to Key West next week in my C8.

I love Key West. I was down there in 2007 for a work up in the Navy. Lots of chickens and scooters

Most hotels out there have bike rentals. Park the car and bike your way around. Very fun. Visit the Hemingway House too.

It’s nice there, make sure to visit Ernest Hemingways house. And yes the chickens are wild there. And since u travel so much, maybe u should get exciting Airbnb’s and include them in the vids 👍🏼

It would be wild cool to see you catch up with Damon & Dave with the #DDE crew #Smee, would be awesome to see it stored on one of their lifts while your not in the US.
You need to hook up with #DDE on this trip.

It's a great spec. I do think after it's been across America it needs to go the NC500. Or possibly up to the article circle like Harry's garage did with his RR Shadow.

Ahh fondly remember a shelby cobra 427 trying to get its mot in spain. My 84 320 passed with flying colors. Helped the owner pass the mot. Carbs needed a major adjustment.

I love how there's just a bunch of chickens wandering the streets of Key West without a care in the world. xD

It must be nice to be able to import a car. As I'm sure you know, you can't import a car that wasn't federalized for 25 years. In Canada it's 15 years

Shmee should really find a way to do some laps at the Freedom Factory with cleetus mcfarland that'd be awesome

I would love the see a step by step import process for the UK if I'm honest

Be expensive, and I'm afraid it would need to be detuned otherwise it would fail and MOT / IVA certification.

I can't detect the best through video but I think that in Germany the exhaust would be allowed at a maximum of 20% of the current volume. Which is unfortunately a shame.

I wish it was as easy to import a car into the US as it is to import to the UK. I’d have all kinds of euro weirdness in my garage!

It takes longer to do than you think. Map scaling is deceptive! Also Tim. When you import to UK, the US windshield would likely need swapping out. UK ones disintegrate into smooth pebbles for safety reasons. I don't believe American ones are obligated to do that.

I've just imported a pickup from Canada, It's a pain in the butt .... Switzerland is the worst for homologations, I can't drive it, can't have plates, I blocked in each and every way 😭
