  • The role of a self-propelled gun came from combat experiences in World War I and from Von Manstein’s “Sturmartillerie” concept. During the German offensives on the Allied front, infantry lacked artillery support against fortifications in places out-ranged by their heavy artillery behind the lines. A need for a mobile artillery piece was necessary to keep up with the German infantry and fight enemy fortifications with a direct-fire assault role.
On June 15, 1936, Daimler-Benz AG was ordered to develop a support vehicle mounting the 75 mm howitzer as its armament in a casemate structure with a traverse of 25 degrees. The vehicle was to provide full protection for its crew and be no taller than an average soldier. Daimler-Benz repurposed the chassis and running gear of their Panzer III design for the role. These new vehicles were named the Sturmgeschütz III, and the finished designs were sent to Alkett for prototype production and five were produced in 1937.
These prototypes were made of mild steel and had the 75 mm StuK 37 L/24 cannon, an adaption of the original 75 mm KwK 37 cannon on the Panzer IV. This gun would be featured on the StuG III variants Ausf. A to Ausf. E.
The StuG III entered production from January 1940 to the end of the war on April 1945 due to the many upgrades done on the vehicle to increase serviceability and its low cost. At about a total production of 11,300 StuG III and its variants, the StuG III design was the most produced armoured fighting vehicle in German service.
Only 36 Ausf.As were produced by Daimler-Benz AG between January and May 1940. The first were delivered in September 1939 and the whole series completed in April 1940. The last six were based on the Panzer III Ausf.G chassis. However, due to numerous production faults, only four batteries were sent in France by May 1940.
The Ausf.B was produced by Alkett and saw a much larger production, between June 1940 and May 1941. They were nearly identical to the Ausf.A, if not for the slightly larger tracks. Standard roadwheels were interlocked with external 520x95mm ruberrized roadwheels and both were interchangeable. The early 10-speed transmission, which proved troublesome, was replaced by a 6-speed one. To reduce chances of the tracks being thrown off during tight turns, the forward return rollers were re-positioned even further forward.
The Ausf.C was nearly identical to previous versions and was only produced for a single month, in April 1941, with 50 vehicles coming out of the factory. The C had the main gunner’s forward view port eliminated and replaced by a relocated periscope in the front left of the casemate.
The Ausf.D was virtually identical, only receiving an on-board intercom. 150 were delivered between May and September 1941. It was simply an upgrade of the C on the production line.

A lot of early 1941 Eastern Front footage, I bet it was miserable as all hell fighting there in the winter time. The Stug III was the most widely produced tank in the Jerry's arsenal. Some of the best WWII footage I seen, thanks for posting.

Strictly speaking a Stug wasn't a tank as it didn't have a turret; it was a self-propelled gun.

@@truthseeker9163 That’s not his definition. Stugs are considered assault guns when they have the early, short barrel, low velocity gun. The later stugs with longer guns are considered tank destroyers. You must not watch many YT videos on the subject. Any time I see a comment referring to assault guns and tank destroyers as tanks I almost cringe because I KNOW somebody’s gonna correct the poster about it.

The Tiger I was designed when Germany was still on the offensive. The Tiger was designed as a heavy breakthrough tank with a powerful gun to knock out the Soviet heavy tanks the germans encountered during operation Barbarossa. As the war progressed and Germany was om the defensive Tigers were also used to stop enemy breakthroughs. The early StuGs had short barreled 75mm howitzer like cannons. It was designed as an assault gun, to support infantry. Later in the war they gave the StuGs long barreled 75mm anti tank cannons and its role changed to a tank destroyer role. The fact that a StuG didn't have a turret that could rotate 360 degrees makes it less suitable as an offensive vehicle. It's low silloute however made it very suitable as a defensive/ambush tank killer.
In the end the StuG 3 destroyed more allied tanks than any other german tank. This is due to germany being on the defensive for the last 2 years of the war and it was the most produced armored vehicle by the Germans, among other reasons. Both the Tiger and the StuG were very good vehicles for their intended roles.

The Stug III was not much of a tank killer until the arrival of the Stug III F/8 & then the Stug III G. They had the very effective longer L/40 & L/48 75mm gun respectively.
FYI, the L/24 gun used by the A to E models had a rather low muzzle velocity, which meant that a solid-shot anti-tank shell wouldn't have been able to penetrate enemy armour. The Germans did develop H.E.A.T. (*) ammunition for the L/24 gun, but the gun's low muzzle velocity meant that the shell followed a very curved trajectory. This made it more difficult to accurately fire at distant enemy tanks.
BTW, one of the reasons that the Stug III compiled so many kills during the war was, in part, due to the fact that more Stug IIIs were manufactured than any other German AFV. Nevertheless,, there is no doubt that its very low profile, very good anti-tank gun (on the Stug III F/8 & Stug III G models) & its excellent aiming optics made it particularly deadly in a defensive/ambush role.
However, once the Soviets & western Allies began to field better tanks & antitank guns in large numbers, or whenever urban warfare was involved, the Stug III became less effective when it was used to support attacks. In those situations, the location of enemy defences & AFVs could not be anticipated, so a main battle tank with a powerful gun in a turret was able to deal with threats in all directions more easily than an assault gun, which had to turn the entire vehicle to engage targets to its left or right..
(*) 'High Explosive Anti Tank' ammo, which was also used by Panzerfausts, Panzerschrecks, Bazookas, PIATs, etc. With H.E.A.T. ammo, its ability to penetrate armour does not depend on the impact velocity of the shell, just the quantity of explosive charge in the shell (assuming the angle of impact was not too shallow).
