- In this video we'll take a look at how we load and transport gear for the trail. We'll dive into our box system, look at how we distribute weight around the vehicle. I'll also climb on the roof and let my 6 year old drive me around the neighborhood...

Nice job, the only video I've found useful. Well done my friend.
Glad it helped!
Just found your channel... must say, I love it. Self deprecation is undervalued. Bravo on the channel.
Thx!
Great...very entertaining...as usual. Super fun. Love the GX.
Your videos are brilliant. I’m about to get a gx 460 so I couldn’t be happier with your videos
Lots of valuable tips, thanks!
Congrats on the new rack! I love your videos - they are so down to earth and real! I also very much appreciate the self-deprecating humor! Keep posting these!
Will do! Little Red campfire review coming up next.
Sweet! Thanks for the video
Thanks for the chuckle. Aluminum, very funny.
I really enjoyed watching your video. Made me laugh a couple of times. 😂
Car is looking sick.
lol "having a propane tank seems to reduce the amount of people tailgating me"
Liked the vid and your narration style 😂 Plano boxes rock👍 little tip if ya want to make the boxes more water and dust resistant for driving conditions you can get door seal or window seal sticky gasket rolls at the hardware store and line the lid grove with the gasket which makes the box even more weather and dust resistant for those down pour drives or dusty washboard roads.
That’s a great trick. I saw a thread on Overland Bound about using door gasket but they were using super glue I think. Your approach sounds much easier, I might actually do that. Thanks!
Excellent video. Quite entertaining as well.
Thx!
@@WastingTimeInTheWoods Curious....what size and make/model platform rack is that? It looks quite functional.
Great video as always. If your kids don't have long legs, I would recommend the frontrunner footwell water tank, lowest possible place and in between the wheels. I would also recommend removing the third row unless you plan on carrying short leg people back there. Gives you another 70 lbs back too!
Thanks and great points. Have thought about the footwell tank. We’re mulling pulling the back seats but we still have two kids and a lot of friends to ferry about. Someday.
Love your videos you make all this so approachable!! I'm trying to decide between the shorter K one and your new longer N one. Just curious did you change your cross bars on this bigger rack? In the video it looks like you added a 3 cross bar. Keep the videos coming!!
can you make a video about how you made your t-slot pegs
I can’t believe most people have a life (or kids) thus are not posting more comments to your video 🏴☠️;)
Which T Nut eye bolt do you use and where'd you source them? I like this solution you've shown!
Lmfao. "Eventually roll the GX with my family on the trail."
Thank you for putting this video together 👍 Can you recommend any particular T slot eye bolts, other than the silly expensive Yakima ones?
Not really, I’ve looked high and low because I’m a cheap bastard. I have a bunch of Amazon/eBay ones now which have worked fine, but none are nearly as good as the Yakima ones. I was at a off-road accessory store, shooting a commercial for them about three months ago and asked them if they could get me an alternative. They said they’ve looked. Their conclusion after checking Granger, and a bunch of industrial suppliers was that Yakima isn’t even marking them up much. You can get the same ones from Granger, but they cost about the same.
Love your videos! How wind noise with the boxes on top? And what is the highway MPG with everything loaded?
Thanks! Theres a bit of noise with them up there but not distracting. Id say 20-30% more than just the rack? No idea on the hwy mileage, sorry. The only time I take the freeway is up into the mountains fully loaded and Ive never tried to subtract the trail mileage.
Newer subscriber. Love your channel, content and laughs. Just wanted to confirm, the Yakima lock n load size you got is the 84x54? Also looks like you put in Yakima roof mounts and rails to get away from factory/OEM rails. What exactly are the Yakima parts you ordered for the roof mounts and rails to support the lock n load platform? TIA!
I wish I could help you with this one, but those mounts are only available in Australia. I got them from a very cool dude on iH8mud who liked my vids. They are Prado mounts for the Yak LockNLoad bars and I used the E-sized platform which was probably a bit too narrow in front. I would use the N size if doing it again. Someone else asked about them in the comments here and I dropped to part number in the replay so you could try to get them out of Australia. Yak is developing GX mounts for the US though so I would just wait and get an official solution or go with a different vendor.
Great video! I got a Toyota Prado GXL and was thinking of what size Yakima platform rack to get. What size did you end up getting here?
Thanks! I went with the E size but I had to tweak the front brackets in a bit to fit. I’d go with the ‘N’ size if I could do it again and that’s what they recommend for the Prado I believe.
Awesome vid. What size and make model tires are you running. Looking at WILDPEAK A/T3W - SIZE: LT265/65R18
Check out this video I did on my tire wheel combo - czcams.com/video/T9JbYKu0dgY/video.html
Curious, what was the rationale with this style of roof rack vs an offering from victory4x4 or southern style off road? Thank you for any answer!
Ive come around to them since I poked fun at their looks in this video - czcams.com/video/MqJhU1hEd1U/video.html Those are what I would call 80/20 racks because they use 80/20 commodity aluminum cross bars and they have a ton going for them. Id still prefer a full platform with more coverage like Yakima, front runner or Rhino for too many reasons to explain here but the 80/20 are the lowest and lightest. If you start a thread on ih8mud’s prado 150 forum I’ll expand.
Wondering if a cargo net would be better than individual straps and bolts.
I dont think so, the cargo net dont hold stronger enough all the stuff in place specially off road, the straps are always better and if one of them fails the others package are safe otherwise if your cargo net fails all your stuff will fall on the road
Hi Do you need some great lighting for your car to help you better driving, off-road? We're the pro auto lighting manufacturer for nearly 20 year and we're looking for sponsorship!
How many MPGs did your rig lose with this set up? Curious as I want to do something similar...for my overlanding KOA expeditions haha
Hard to say. Didn’t really do extensive testing and mpg is highly variable. If I had to guess what my tires lift and empty rack do to mpg Id say -1.5ish? We didn’t buy them for the epa rating though ; ) She was a hog before I put the hat and shoes and her.
Jake you a one funny Fella!!! For a thorough run down on roof racks and load weight I would suggest viewing Ronny Dahl at 4 Wheeling Australia, he really disects the issue well. Thanks for the morning laugh.
Thx! I like Ronny. He’s a hoot.
How did you attach it? I really don't like the normal roof crossbars on the 460.
Got some Aussie Yakama mounts that you can’t get here unfortunately. They make a US version now but I hear amounts sit slightly higher off the roof.
@@WastingTimeInTheWoods That's exactly what I found. Guess it's the way to go. Part nos?
Wouldn’t a roof box be better? It will provide protection from weather elements and better aerodynamics?
Not as flexible and won't carry much weight compared to a full platform. We take a lot of crap out there.
Wheres that link for the ratchet straps man? :) Great vid
Sorry! amzn.to/3wWn5cr
@@WastingTimeInTheWoods Unbelievable...the nerve of this guy... :)
Also, that was for the Plano trunks not the straps
All the links are updated in the description now.
@@WastingTimeInTheWoods the link is taking me to the Plano boxes. Already have them lol

Recently got a rack similar to yours. My older basket roof, got bashed by a hidden branch in a tall bush.. i use the same plano cases too, had mine almost a decade and theyre still in great shape.
04:36 The boxes seem empty here. Are you lying to us?
:-)
Hi, what size of this roof rack you have in this video?
‘K’ size I believe. One size smaller than they recommended but I have the ausie version of the mounts. Might not work with us version.
Can you link the mount, having issues finding a way to mount the large platform to my '23 gx. Without using the factory cross bars.. thanks in advance. @@WastingTimeInTheWoods
🇵🇬, ,
I also pronounce Aluminium correctly, but why do you?
Still like it?
Yep. Love this platform. Rock solid.
pronounces it "aluminium" > sub'd...
Water weights 8 pounds per gallon for fuck sake 😂😂😂
