There is no certainty either on the ancient toponym or on the origin of the current name of the city. The most recent archaeological excavations show that a nucleus already existed in the Messapian era (5th century BC). From the Tabula Peutingeriana, from the late Roman period, it is clear only that in those years, approximately in the area of present-day Monopoli, the center called Dertu stood.
Different etymologies have been hypothesized about Monopoli, none of them really binding:
For example, from the Greek (Either "Lonely City" / "Important city" or "City of Minos").

The city of Monopoli would draw its ancient origins from a mighty Messapian fortress. The Messapian walls probably surrounded the entire city, important sections of the fortifications of the 5th century BC are still preserved....

How do you do it? Each video is as beautiful as the one before. Each story is as well told as the story before. Each town is as charming, as ancient-looking, as captivating as the one before. Perhaps sometimes when you are editing a new video, you might wonder if you've lost your touch, if this one isn't up to that high standard you have set. I know I would have thoughts like that whenever I edit a video. And yet there it is, your latest video, revealing stone churches and cobblestone walkways that take us back in time yet again. The magic happens again. Your camera floats through the streets and we are carried along. Another wonderful job. Again.
Dear Ken... I still don't know how I can thank you, and I've been saying this for months by now, every time we meet up even here in the chats of the videos. So happy to read this, truly.. I always think there are some mistakes here and there , but slowly slowly improving...and to tell the Truth, you also helped me a lot with your suggestions you have given me on drone filming (...the close by shots, the lateral movements, the flowing between scenes...)
Glad somebody can appreciate them, truly , I say it by heart. Puglia is captivating... Just in this town, which is very close to Polignano by the way, I met an interesting person (if you watch the "cut" near piazza Garibaldi it's because we were talking together for some minutes)... A guy who was in the shipping industry, and was enrolled in the merchant navy in the 70s. We talked about lots of stuff and about his adventures in Japan in those years.
I must say that...apart from filming here and there, I've been knowing and meeting so many interesting people and listening to some very interesting stories...it truly puts everything into a different perspective... The walking tours are a passion, but it's nice to remember that behind those persons shown there are so many stories.. would be nice even to maybe film their stories I sometimes think)
Love doing this ..I hope I can continue.

Da monopolitani trapiantato in Veneto non posso far altro che restare abbagliato da tanta meraviglia.... Monopoli è un connubio di bellezze artistiche, naturali, culinarie con un centro storico da valorizzare anche culturalmente, spiagge e calette alla portata di tutti, una campagna collinare con vedute sulla pianura colma di ulivi.
Monopoli, città unica, come altre bellezze italiane, ma il mio cuore batte per la mia città.

I was in monopoli and the coolest thing I saw there was this old man playing piano next to the beach. Unfortunately he isn't there in your Video, but you did an amazing job, it's such a beautiful city

Thank you for yet another walk in an inspring little town.
I'm in love with all the gorgeous creamy stone, the ironwork balconies, the arched doorways and the louvred doors that let the breeze in when it's a hot day ! So beautiful - if I were ever to design my own house, I think I'd make it a wannabee Puglia look-alike, altho I'm sure getting that stone would cost a fortune nowadays ! I'm a Brit in the US, but I have visited Puglia once some years ago - near Galipoli, stayed in an old 'Masseria', which was a wealthy family vacation home, in the then countryside, 1780's or so. Very interesting. I would like to see a video of those old houses before they disappear forever, altho there are quite a few left. The one we stayed in had a huge central area where the horses would have been stabled - now a large living room. Seems these little towns spent their whole time fighting to keep out those who wanted to take them over, such a long history too !
Nice seeing you again Veronica. And as you, I am also quite in love with Puglia. Originally I'm from near Rome and.... being 40 y.o. by now, I went there for the first time...4 years ago. I missed a lot in those years I guess. Most of those towns, as Monopoli, were the first time I saw them and I was always quite impressed. The "whiteness" of their stone alleys and housed, the "Masserie" as you said, outside the towns... the olive trees, the sea, the food too Must add... and the hospitality as well I must say. As of today, I rank Puglia among my most beloved regions I've visited for all the reasons above. Good idea about filming some masseria... if I get back I may want to film a bit, maybe a short video or something like that.

Thanks for taking us on this tour to another interesting 'unknown' town. This place has much history with the different battles being fought over it. I do enjoy the sights and the sounds of the people as they converse among themselves on the streets and alleys. It brings much realism to the experience. The different architect of these old buildings is something I greatly admire. The Basilica of St. Maria Santissima della Madia is truly a wonder. Almost got a jump-scare when the girl almost crashed into you.😁
Dear Lang, glad to see you again. Indeed, Monopoli is truly a little gem, not so famous for sure... and yeah, hah that girl with the bike was quite unexpected. I left it in the video and didn't edit it) She was so kind too . One of the things that happen in these walks for sure)
I've 'lost hope' of stopping having major surprises from your videos, despite being someone who dedicated much time to the study of Italian history, (hundreds of) localities and their heritage.
Seems like these streets changed little over the last centuries. To me, it looks even more genuine than Ostuni, yet, is the first time I hear of it.
Is also interesting how these enclosed medieval towns with narrow streets were forcing people to live together close to each other. This must have lead to specific relationships which are still the fabric of Italian society and ethos, including the cohesion between regions with different languages and striking cultural contrasts.
Dear Andrei thank you so much for your words, as always. I agree as it's not the most famous of cities, but it's surely a pretty one. I agree wholeheartely about the closeness of the houses, the alleys and the relation to the ethos in the italian society and the differences between regions. I must say that in the south of Italy this ethos is surely stronger and still more present than in the center-north part of Italy, though, newer generations are losing a lot of it, more and more, for various reasons. I guess it's an international event anyway, but it's truly a sad state of affairs, at least for me (for some it's a plus).
I hope to post more interesting towns as well; in a way, the channel truly started as a project to let people know about the "unknown" towns of Italy, but with time even the more famous ones (Rome included for instance...) came to be. It's a nice journey, and I hope to continue . I wish you a nice weekend ahead my friend

I was going to save watching your last two vlogs for the weekend, but I remembered I have to cook for the Fourth of July. Beef ribs, pork ribs, braised lamb, and two whole pieces of salmon on the barbeque. So I finished Cisternino now Monopoli as always super great intro you sir are a professional hands down. Glad you enjoyed Monopoli Dear Geraldine, heh indeed that girl was quite scary, but she was so kind to say "sorry" i even decided to leave that part in the film. Truly cosy city, very "relaxed" in a way... good atmosphere I had there, it was just before I had to leave to go back to Rome, so it was quite hard to not be able to stay more... but I'm thinking of going back to Puglia in the end of July as I lvoed it, and during summertime it's just stunning. Ah... also next week I'll upload a walk in Polignano again but... by night. I hope you'll enjoy this small different tour (never really filmed by night!)
