    Beautiful. these planes had two engines wich is harder to barrell roll than a single engine fighter and the double boomed tail made it harder to spin also. but they had thousands of kills and blew up and straffed the hell out of alot of grounds.. this plane is killer and a doll

    I was very fortunate to see one of the great birds in an airshow in Tupelo Ms once. Unfortunatly, I was not able to see her on the ground, as I was engaged in other activities. But, she flew right over our heads at about 150 feet, (guessing) and I could not get enought of the sight of her. I wish I could get to fly in one someday, maybe!

    I must have watched your video hundreds of times and I well up each and every time. What a beautiful and fitting tribute to the F-15 of its era. The 2-voice choir of those Allisons singing in unison is something that has to be experienced in person to be fully appreciated. And it made my heart soar to see Glacier Girl flying lead. Fabulous job and thank you for this vid. The 5 dislikes must have been Bf109 jocks.

    Next April 6th 2013 at Chino planes of fame the P-38 will be featured -- this is an outstanding video of them. My mother worked swing shift at Lockheed in Burbank CA all thru WW2 as a Rosy the Riveter on the P-38.. she told me she worked in the fwd nacelle installing the machine guns and mounts. She said she met Kelly Johnson a number of times too. Towards the end of WW2 they switched her to the 4 engine Constellation construction.. She had a much memorabilia that has unfortunately been lost.

    Words simply escape me. I'm not normally a big fan of most warbird music videos, but this one is perfect. The song of 2 Allisons X5 singing in unison is usually all the music these videos need, but yours is the exception. Beautiful. Thank you.

    Epic! I believe this is the largest flight of Lightnings in over 50 years. On the way to the 2010 California Capitol Airshow. 23 Skidoo made an unscheduled stop due to mechanical issues and never made the airshow. But seeing the other 4 up close was an amazing treat!

    May I also add...the music was majestic and perfectly relevant to the aircraft. Normally I hate people adding music since part of the enjoyment of these grand piston aircraft is hearing their own "music", but you sure did a nice job with the choice of representative music. Of all the aircraft I have flown...I wish the fork tailed devil was apart of that list.

    It was a very fast plane, over 400 mph. It had a quick, steady, consistent rate of climb, initially and all the way to altitude, with both the props pushing the plane. The Allison engines had a strong supercharger in it. Zoom, get off the ground and in two minutes you're almost at ten thousand. It had the nose-out trajectory of shooting which meant no adjustments for deflection, and no angle of adjustment for convergence. It was just straight out of the windscreen; whatever the nose was pointed at, there would be shells landing. It was just plain fast, like a De Havilland Mosquito fast. Blazing fast. Most models 438 mph. It had to be flown in straight lines, and climb at a 45 to 60 degree angle, no steeper, yet it could at 400mph. It had 430+mph speed at sea level or treetop level, or at 37,000. The guns only took a single 1-second burst to obliterate a plane. It could destroy smaller warships. The cannon was surrounded by six .50 heavy machine guns, all clustered close to each other, and all the guns went off simultaneously. This plane had very, very good range on internal tanks. The pilot had excellent forward and rearward vision. It had a comfortable cockpit. It could carry a 3,000 pound bomb load and pull a loaded glider. It destroyed trains and aircraft hangars. This was a fantastic weather plane. The allies would use this plane to take strategic fine instruments and materials back and forth round trip to Sweden. Nothing could touch it as a photo intelligence plane (too fast). It was so stable on takeoff it, according to pilot testimony, "flew itself off the ground". It was a pleasure to manuever while taxiing due to the tricycle landing gear stance. They fixed the prop action to be counter-rotating props very early on. This plane could fly over the Alps, no problem. It was feared by the BF109 pilots in North Africa, for it's shocking acceleration and speed, and it's ability to keep climbing at a steady rate of speed, without delay or loss of speed in climb. There was no way those nazi pilots would dare go head-on against this plane due to it's nose armament.
    Very capable, useful, effective, role-playing aircraft, and it entered the air battles early in the war. This is why it was built and used all the way to 1945. The pilots loved this plane; loved to fly it and the way it handled and what it could do. This plane was truly a stand-out.

    • @johnosbourn4312
      @johnosbourn4312 Před 7 lety

      Sunshinyday The max speed of the later production P-38's was 417MPH, not 438MPH. The total number of machine guns in the nose is four, not six, and it was only built as a single seat fighter, but it was converted into a two seat night fighter, lead ship for level bombing, and radar equipped navigation, and adverse weather bombing aircraft. But, it never was used to transport vital supplies, and personnel to different locations. That's what the Mosquito did with the British Overseas Airways Corporation, during the war. Also, in northern Europe, the aircraft had engine reliability issues, because the V-1710's that powered it couldn't digest the British blend of Avgas, that we were using. So, you need to go, and recheck your facts.

    • @SunnyIlha
      @SunnyIlha Před 7 lety

      John Osbourn
      Yes, you are correct; four
      .50 heavy machine guns and one 20mm cannon.
      The plane which had six HMG and one cannon was the Douglas A20.
      This plane had 438mph speed however, and the unarmed photo intelligence plane, many hundreds of pounds lighter, was faster than this.
      You can argue this with the historical experts, mass of literature, test pilots and testimonials of the pilots who flew it, which are the source of the facts.

    • @johnosbourn4312
      @johnosbourn4312 Před 6 lety

      Sunshinyday The P-38 never went as fast as you said, instead, the Max Speed of the "J", and "L" models is 414MPH.

    • @AlanRoehrich9651
      @AlanRoehrich9651 Před 2 lety

      @@johnosbourn4312
      Incorrect. Those speeds are at Military power on 130 octane fuel.
      The correct top speed for the P-38J-25-LO, and P-38L-1-LO is 442 MPH, at WEP, engine settings of 74" manifold pressure and 3,000 RPM.
      The engines were actually capable of 80" of manifold pressure, and 3,200 RPM. The Army Air Corps validated those settings in a durability test. However, they refused to approve them for field use, so 74" @ 3,000 RPM is correct for WEP, in the field, as deployed. The lowest speed for that power setting is 442 MPH, the highest is 447 MPH. The 447 MPH speed is not fully documented by Lockheed or the Army Air Corps.
      The P-38K as tested at Wright-Patterson, by the Army Air Corps, to validate Lockheed ratings, is in excess of 450 MPH on a standard day.
      The P-38 G and H models exceeded 420 MPH in WEP with considerably less HP, 275 HP per engine, than was available in the J and L models. So, no, the J and L models were NOT slower. They were considerably faster.
      Some units did rig the late P-38 for the 80" manifold pressure and 3,200 RPM settings, it was not accepted or approved, but it was done on 150 octane fuel.
      This was all documented by noted aviation author and Lockheed engineer Warren Bodie.

    There won't be a next time. Somethimes you have to go with what you have and live with it. Five P-38s were caught from the back seat of a P-51 trainer. It was catch-as-catch-can -- and seriously phenomenal.
    Sometimes that's better than the contrived -- with stabilized cameras and 1080P. In this case, it certainly was.

    So sad that Lefty Gardner's P-38 'White Lightnin', with its long heritage as an
    F-5G 'photo Joe' and a charter member of the Confederate/Commemortive Air Force here in the US is now headquartered in Austria as a flying billboard for Red Bull energy drinks, of all things. It was restored to a pristine pre-war style bare metal and is well-maintained, hitting the air shows in season throughout Europe. But it's doubtful it will ever see the USA again.
