The Flow Hive for honey bees demonstrated some "potential" problems the first time around In this video, not only did the flow-frames NOT leak, but they yielded even more honey than the first time around. • First Flow Hive Extrac...
RAW honey direct from the flow-frames into jars with no filtering, straining or processing/spinning. The honey bees do not have to apply as much wax as with traditional extracting processes generally demand of them and they only replace the cap wax.
How much honey in one flow frame? A Half Gallon!
Remember to remove only surplus honey, not the honey stores that your colony of honey bees need to survive winter or a summer dearth.

One time I had to resque bumblebee which was carrying pollen balls on its legs. I had to catch it with empty jar to take it outside, and noticed that the bee lost one pollen ball, I was so sad. I can imagine the bee going home and trying to explain to Edwin Epps why she is short on the "goods".

I mean, I wouldn’t use it either, just because i have 23 hives with multiple supers. Douing it the old fashioned way is just better for me, i already have a separator, so why bother with these? Also, can i harvest bees wax with these? My woman uses bees wax for tons of stuff.
But for a beginner who doesnt have the gear, these things look great. It is definitely a great starter set. I would not discourage a new bee keeper from buying a flow hive, thats for sure.
@@stonehorn4641 exactly!!!!! This is a new tool in the world of beekeeping that does not replace traditional beekeeping it simply enhances and provides additional ability to harvest honey. Especially for newer beekeepers that do not have the same investments made yet.
I don’t know squat about bee keeping. I’ve only watched a handful of videos so far. But I do know the type of person I like to learn from lots of experience,passionate,about what they’re doing, and of course open minded. Cheers
@@stonehorn4641 I agree I have 11 hives and just use an extractor it’s not cost effective for me to replace everything and I use the wax as well. Robbed all my hives in about 3hrs and I don’t mind doing a bit of hard work robbing honey I feel since the bees are working their butts of I can sweat it out a bit as well. Although in the summer here in southern NSW Australia temps can be high 30s or above the 40s deg Celsius I wet down a t shirt keep me cool under my bee rig, helps heaps. Although the flow hive is quite ingenious I must admit and is probably quite useful for some people wanting to have bees.

Every time you wonder if there's too many still shots of honey dripping out of anything, just know that many non bee keepers come to watch exactly for those moments :)
One thing my grandmother did which I always enjoyed; collecting and keeping jars of pollen from each moth on the wall allowing one to see the variance of colors and taste throughout the year.

I like flow hives, it's a very humanitarian way to extract honey, it doesn't stress the bees at all.

@@levilexi The bees are standing on the caps on the outside. The flow channel is in the middle between the cells where bees are not able to get.

Mr Dunn, I've attended many lectures and viewed countless bee keeping videos on youtube. Every one of your bee videos is so well presented that I wish you created a series for all of us that covers all the basics for beginners. I can't think of anyone else I would rather listen to and learn from. Than you for your high standards and calm manner. It's rare that I want to watch a video more than a couple of times and your videos offer something new with each viewing. THANK YOU!!!!!!!

I too feel the same way! Your calm well spoken demeanor and highly informative information are top notch and are a natural to the teaching world geared toward the enthusiatic learner, which allows the leaner to embrace all of the knowledge given and move forward with it! While there may be other well done videos out there by other awesome beekeepers and teaching fellows, just as there are various teaching styles, there are also various styles of learners, sometimes creating issues for the learner if the teaching style does not resonate with them. Whether it be the tone of voice, the speed or lack there of in the wording being spoken, lack or too much visual aides and/or other various things!
Please don't short change yourself from the joy of teaching and sharing beekeeping information, or those who would learn best from you as a teacher! Some people may need that over the top excitement to stay engaged but others may not and that would be where you could come in and fill a space that is there just waiting on you! If you want to do it, do so! If your feel there is another out there you would have your granddaughter to watch to learn and feel no need for your touch then don't do it!!! Just syaing we love you and we love your heart and style and all the good stuff about you and we pick you!!!!

I know this video is a bit dated. I just happened across some of your videos tonight after taking an interest in how bee keepers perform certain tasks. I really have no interest in bee keeping myself, but admire many of those that do. I just wanted to say it was honestly a pleasure to watch your videos and listen to your explanations. Not only were the videos very informative, but much of the footage is visually stunning. Very nicely done. I also really appreciate how you represent not only how I believe bee keepers ought to be, but how all of us ought to be. You seem to have a very symbiotic relationship with your bees that is quite beautiful.

You are right about honey, even some of the most reputable stores are stocking honey that has been altered by amending with "honey-like" substances to cut cost. Frederick, thank you for your Flowhive videos. Like you, I purchased early (6 frame). Like you, I was annoyed with the initial workmanship of the cedar box and hardware. Unlike you, I had no idea what I'm doing with bees. Family intervened. I put the project away until now due to many major family travels and my lack of understanding.You're filling many of my gaps in understanding that the inventors appeared to assume away. One item that still perplexes me is how the boxes merely, loosely stack on each other, and being unconnected - lacking rigid support. We have wind in the northern plains. Your use of ballast on the hive roofs, your measuring of hive slope, and your 'take off stations' made perfect sense. Thanks again.
I appreciate your statements about protective gear. As a seasoned beekeeper that helps many new beekeepers I'm always saying to wear the gear that makes you comfortable and confident.

I grew up with no dad but many many mentors. One of which was a man who did everything solo. He taught me so much about farming, both vegetable and animal, as well as beekeeping. I remember driving all over to various hives that he left on other peoples land to help their crops and make honey for him to sell. I loved all the information he taught me. I love beekeeping. Frank rarely used a suit or viel unless it was warm out and the bees were fiesty.He got stung all te time time but never slowed him a bit. Lived to nearly 100 too.

This video was an absolute joy to watch. I have been curious about how flow frames work.
Watching the honest drop is extremely satisfying and seeing all those tiny bee tongues has been adorable! Also, seeing one little worker seemingly trying to squeeze herself through the little hole below the extraction tube was super cute and funny. Your voice is really soothing and I appreciate the time you took to explain what you're doing and especially how you pay attention to the bee behaviour.

I saw the flow frame when it was first gaining attention on the fundraiser site, awesome to see it actually working as intended, a much less intrusive way of collecting honey from healthy hives and such an awesome amount too! Bees deserve maximum respect, and so do the keepers who look after them!

I am thinking of keeping bees. I make mead, and to do it from my own honey seems like an awesome thing.
I have already planted wild flower seeds all over my yard during the last weeks of summer, hopefully they'll show up come springtime.

Mr. Dunn. I am so grateful for your detailed description of your process from beginning to end. Your 3 videos have done more for my confidence than hours of conversations with the Flow Hive folks. I am so excited for my first family of bees this year. I have been prepping for the past 2 years to make sure that I have everything just right. I've practiced the physical maneuvers of moving supers into place and the mechanics of the harvesting process and seeing how you operated your frames was very encouraging.

New person, gotta say i like how smart bees are with engineering, its kinda mind boggling to think theyve been doin this since before we were in trees
I can't even imagine harvesting honey without being in a full suit, lifting 50 pound supers, and going through the painful process of getting the bees out of supers once they are off. This would also make having a few hives in your backyard much more neighbor-friendly.
It’s not to bad I can extract a deep super in about 20mins bit of time in cleaning up etc but I do wet a shirt down with water put it on under bee suit for air conditioning. I like the flow hive and have one myself but the bees couldn’t stand it so it’s sitting fallow give it another shot one day.
This is awesome! I loved the idea of being able to collect honey without disturbing the hive when I heard of these hives. It’s wonderful to see that they do it! You make it look SO easy! Lol. I’m doing research on if it’s legal to put one in my suburban yard. I’m hoping I can do it, and I want to make sure there are enough resources for my bees too.

Mr. Dunn: I'm rather envious after watching this. I've always been fascinated with apiaries and beekeeping, but since an incident with a sting as a teenager that nearly killed me (anaphylaxis is no fun!) I'll never be able to try it. I don't have any bees and I don't have any interest nor the opportunity to maintain any at the moment but your videos were entertaining and very informative. Wonderful video Frederick, We just did the second extraction on our hive with similar result. living in the part of Australia where we do we dont realy get a winter, just a couple of cooler months so I'm keen to see how the bees production is affected by the weather here. Thanks a lot mate :-)

I'm a British townie who knows nothing about bee keeping - though my parents kept a hive when they were young newlyweds and lived on the Isle of Wight. They look back on those days of youthful honey production with great nostalgia! Your videos came up in my suggestions, and I've been watching with mum and dad, now in their eighties. We've fast become addicted to your videos, and I had to subscribe!
What magical, mysterious creatures bees are, and so sophisticated in their set up and behaviours. I'm constantly asking myself HOW do they know how to do all this amazing stuff! You just have to love and respect them. The hive is like a secret world you give us a fascinating window on. I don't know if I'll ever have an opportunity to keep bees but you've sparked huge curiosity in me on the whole subject and I'm hungry to learn more.
And I have to say, your calm, zen like energy makes your videos a joy - and I'm sure is a key element of your success in bee keeping. My Mum recalled of the two of them, it was my dad who generally got stung. She put that down to his high energy and rather unpredictable movements! She has always been laid back like yourself, and I suspect that's a great asset to keep in harmony with your bees.
Anyway this was another inspiring video, what copious and beautiful amber honey! Do you sell it or is this a strictly non-commercial operation? Thank you for all the entertainment your channel is providing during lock down. Your videos have stirred many happy memories for my parents and put smiles on their faces - no mean feat in the pandemic! It's also soothing to 'spend time' with such a warm and lovely human being and to be reminded that there are big hearted and special people like you in the world. The part I found most satisfying is the flow and getting over a gallon of honey. I love honey but terrified of bees, especially with the risk of killer bees.

really super interesting video. as the honey started flowing my mind automatically started calculating the amount of cups of tea I could make with that.. xD
