- Classic Game Room HD reviews NHL Hockey ('91) for the Sega Genesis. NHL Hockey from EA is the first EA Hockey game from Electronic Arts which was released in 1991 for the Sega Genesis and Mega Drive. This is my favorite sports game and plays fast and furious with barely any realism at all! Play as the Pittsburgh Penguins vs. the Winnipeg Jets, Hartford Whalers, Minnesota North Stars or Quebec Nordiques. NHL 91 is the best of the best with fast, responsive and simple controls. While NHL 10 from EA is a technical marvel and a masterpiece of multiplayer fun, for good old school brawling and scoring mayhem go with the older Sega Genesis NHL Hockey from 1991. This CGR review of NHL Hockey from EA has gameplay from EA Hockey aka NHL Hockey 91 (or NHL 91) for Megadrive and Genesis.
My brother and his friends would play this game until dawn. We loved this game! We got drunk, ordered pizza and played until our hands hurt.
a tip: watch series on Flixzone. Been using it for watching lots of of movies during the lockdown.

My cousin and I use to play this game until morning way back in the days. 15 years later I bought a old Genesis and NHL 93 thinking it would be the same fun but no, it just wasn't nearly as great as the first one. What made the first NHL game so great and addictive was how kooky the goalies where. This is the best two player game of all time, hands down. Find this cartridge and keep it secret-keep it safe, and forget about all those other versions.
Michael Friend Was great but did have some bugs, by far my favorite is 97 on SNES.All the bugs were ironed out and has alot more animations. Each to their own though
The Mega Drive (Genesis) has some of the best sport games ever: the NHL, Madden, Sensible Soccer, NBA Jam T.E., Speedball 2 and many many more!!! Man this is one of the reasons which make the Mega Drive my fav' video games system, so many fantastic and timeless games on it!
Used to play with The Rangers all of the time. Automatic goal: give the puck to Mike Gartner, have him speed skate around the back of the net, skate along the boards and cut across the top of the face off circle and slap shot. Absolute automatic goal.
I used to love this game.
It’s a shame. The Rangers gave up Mike Gartner to the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1994 in exchange for Glenn Anderson. Even though Glenn Anderson was showing signs of aging, the Rangers felt that Gartner probably wouldn’t take them to the Stanley Cup like Anderson would.
I had nintendo at the time. One of my friends got this game and I was so jealous I wanted to cry. It was so far ahead of any other hockey game it was sick!

My childhood!! Just hearing the SFX from this put a smile on my face. I forgot how tapping the charge (speed boost) turned you into an unstopable runaway train capable of demolishing everything in your path.
Absolutely loved this game...played hundreds of hours with my brother. We loved it so much, I don't think we bought another NHL game until the late 90's. Just so much fun. Thx for the video.
God, I love this game. Even though I was born after the height of the Sega Genesis, I loved the simple controls and arcade style gameplay of all the NHL titles of the 16 bit era.
I loved this game as a kid. This and 93 were cool.

I remember playing this with my brother when I was little the fighting was always so funny to us and the way they sound when you shove someone 😂😂
I have 95 and 97 for Genesis, I still remember how in 95 if you were playing through season mode with injuries turned on, the game would freeze for a while upon a huge body check in which a player got injured... and it seemed like the longer the game froze for, the longer the player would be out for. Nothing was more rewarding than a full season injury lol.

You can say that again. This was a title that my friends and I had so much fun playing. Once you figure out how to score against the AI, your challenge is to score as many goals in a limited time. Playing against a friend or family member was the best! And picking fights made this game an awesome title to have in your collection. I loved to hear the cheers of the crowd as your player sped towards the goalie. GOAL L L L !
This game was epic and helped launch both my love of hockey and of video games!! A true classic.
NHLPA 93 was the pinnacle of sports video games. All the improved features of this video's game PLUS all the bugs fixed. No super easy goals

Yeh I'm British and didn't know anything much about Ice Hockey and even I loved NHLPA 93. Even now I play it casually and it's still fun

I'd like to respectfully disagree. The game play itself was improved in NHLPA, but the fighting after the whistle disappeared. NHL was truly the pinnacle in intentional fighting and instigation.

Hands down the GREATEST sports game ever made. This really brings back some great memories. Beers, bongs, and sega all night long. Winner stays on and loser passes the stick
My brother and I played this almost daily. Good god it was so fun.
By far the greatest sport game i own for the Mega Drive. We got the EA Hockey in Europe with national teams like someone posted before me. It has national teams from countries that don't even play ice hockey like my very own Portugal xD

Ah good times. I remember buying this game way back in the day. My brother and I were Sega kids growing up and we used to have an absolute blast with this game. This is also my favorite sports game ever.

I reviewed this game back when I was for Megazone magazine here in Australia and gave it the big sloppy thumbs up! This game single handily converted me to Ice Hockey. Go Pens! LOL

LOL This brings back memory of me playing my friend. I was the Kings and Gretzky and someone was getting in a fight. He thought he's gonna manhandle Gretzky and took it lightly. Gretzky ended up knocking his ass down in 5 punches.

Genesis '94 and PC '95 are my favorite old NHL games (hated the bug in '94 where you could only play the first round of the playoffs as teammates, after that, head-to-head was the only option you could choose). There are still guys that do fan-made roster updates for those games.
Very few sports games I played, but I LOVED this game. And yes, we also learned how to "dunk the puck" too. Heh.

We got this game NHL Hockey and Europe was given EA Hockey , which had International teams. The game play was incredibly fast in that one. It was amazing! Old school hockey rocks!

Rocked the Whalers like a Hurricane... LMAO. That was a good one. The old NHL games were awesome on the Genesis. NHL 94 on the Sega CD is the peak of modern civilization.

I agree with you. The '91 is by far the best one. Now, they came out with ones after that, tinkered with them, and tried to make them better, but I keep going back to that '91 game. It's a lot of fun and I still have them all, and still play with them.

that games is amazing. It's so fast and smooth. I think that one came out the year before this game that he is reviewing. He's calling this NHL 91, I believe it's actually NHL Hockey. The follow up is where they started with the number . NHL 93, 94....

Even though it's missing fighting and injuries, NHL94 has one-timers though which makes it the greatest sports game of all-time IMO.

This is indeed the greatest hockey game ever made. I was lucky enough to come across it for $0.50 a couple of weeks ago, which is good, because I probably paid at least $50.00 for it on rentals. I should have just bought it back in the day!

Me and my buddies played this all the time. Great memories. Joe Montana football also. Wish they had this loaded to the mini Sega Genesis they just released.

I used to love when I was playing against my buddy, I'd use the C button to check into one of the guys that he wasn't controlling and knock him offside just as he was trying to cross the blue line. AH, good times!!!!

Yeah but you couldn't create a fight in 93 the way you could in the first one. FIghts would just happen randomly in 93 in 91 they could happen anytime a play stopped. lol After a goal you could just hit someone and the fight would be on lol they even had a stat for "fights won" haha it was awesome. Still the best game ever.
Great game. My friends and I would pull our goalies for the whole game and have a score of over 100 goals each, was SO much fun.

Possibly the most fun game I've ever played. Only problem was my Megadrive was one of a bad batch that played some games in black and white. This game was one of em but I still loved it. Two player co-op was cool -- one of you take out the goalie, the other score.

@DestynCore There was an NHL licensed hockey game for the Intellivision 30 years ago, but NHL Hockey ('91) is the first of the EA Sports hockey games on the Sega Genesis.

I miss the Jets and North Stars!! This along with NHLPA 93 and NHL95 were the best games ever!! I loved that you could start fights in this one.could rack up 400+ PIM in a game playing games between Calgary and Edmonton or Minnesota and Chicago. good times.

I’m not even a hockey fan but I’m a sports fan . This was one of the best games ever made on Sega . The side goal trick is classic, you can also triple deke the goalie
The NHL games on Sega were awesome.
Hell, basically all of the EA Sports games from back then were just pure awesome. The baseball ones weren't to the same standard as the others though but they were still pretty good. NHL 94 IMO is probably the best of the Genesis games. And Cheap hockey tricks are in like all old hockey video games, the easiest is probably in Brett Hull Hockey though, you go behind the net on the goalie when at bottom of the screen and cut in hard, you get a goal EVERY time.

NHL 98 on the Sega Genesis had the greatest music ever.
On-the-ice gameplay is what most makes up a hockey game. The deke stick changed hockey games forever, and in a definitely good way.

I bought EA's NHL Hockey on the first day it came out after reading the preview in EGM. Spent countless hours playing this game with my brother and friends. This, NHLPA 93, and NHL 94 are my three all time favorite sports games of all time. I wish someone could take the best elements of each game and make the ultimate Genesis Era Hockey game.
Been doing a lot of revisiting/research on this series and I'm going to ask around and see if anyone I know can make a version that would combine all the sounds, animations and concepts from the entire series on Genesis and then add the 2014 roster. I've been playing NHL 94 at work with the 2014 roster lately with another person in the office via LAN. I also have a friend who runs an arcade and we've been playing various NHL games there on his console and at his house so ideas are floating around and it's definitely on the drawing board right now. At the very least, I will have his tech guy burn the 2014 roster version of NHL94 to a real cartridge.
Imagine being able to play online today with these games. I would pay

What's amazing is some of them are still playing, Mark Recchi, and I think Rod Brindamour was on the Flyers back then.
Brind’Amour was on the St. Louis Blues here in NHL Hockey 92. He wasn’t listed on the Flyers until NHLPA Hockey 93.
goddamn this brings back memories! hard to believe it's been 24 years! I remember being able to literally score at will in this game. You could do it the way shown in the video but there's another way to do it I find a bit more legit.
