  • Hey I'm Justin Mitchell. I'm a professional photographer specializing in on-water foiling action. I'm available for work worldwide. I speak English and Spanish.
    Here's my portfolio: justinmitchell.co.nz/
    Filming the AC boats is just a hobby I picked up during the last cup.

    Location: Auckland, NZ
    Wind at time of filming: 12-20kts SW (Away from camera POV)

    So it sounds like this is definitely the last sailing session for Taihoro in NZ before being shipped off to Barcelona. I filmed this from East Coast Bays. It gives us a good overview... a bit far away still, but its another viewpoint at least. They were further out to begin with... I left some of that footage in at the start, pretty distant though... you can sort of see the boat 🤣 After a while they stopped and dropped both sails and replaced them with different ones I imagine, before setting off again... not stopping until they got all the way to town and finished the session.
    Next up... two boat testing with the AC40s I'm assuming... but first, Sail GP Bermuda this weekend 👍

    6:45 how they pick up speed after that turn is just soooo impressive! Even from this distance and at that angle you can tell: That beast is flying!! Thanks again for the effort of filming, editing and posting. But I am sure you have your share of fun watching them ...

      THanks Stefan... she definitely takes off bearing away... time for a little break before they bring the ac40s out... we all just want to see more ac75 though...

      It looks like they all do. Thats what bothers me. Its going to boil down to maneuvers and wind shifts. I dont think any team is going to have a speed edge this time around.

    Interesting watching it in 2x speed replay. They are so stable. Go get em guys 💪

    Savage speed! Unfortunately, Barcelona rarely has any wind... I wish the cup was held right there in Auckland with these exact conditions.... Instead we will see rabbit fart breezes...

    • @jamesaron1967
      @jamesaron1967 Před 29 dny

      I'm afraid you're right about the venue. Light breeze combined with the sea state is going to make for unfavorable conditions as we saw with the AC40 races.

    Looks like they are dailing it in now. Still hard to tell but they look faster than the other boats.
    Maneuvers are far more polished.

      Yes, they look faster to me as well but we can't know for sure.

    Huge respect for what I’m seeing. Anyone with more knowledge able to give an advised verdict and opinion of our new weapon……also comparisons with what we have observed amongst the challengers 🦴

    • @JustinMitchellTV
      @JustinMitchellTV  Před měsícem

      Its hard to compare... what you can say though is the Taihoro commissioning process has been a lot quicker than the competitors so far... it went out on its first day and sailed... its sailed in really light and also 30kt breeze and has looked great on the water... When it comes to America's Cup, we'll really only know when they boats are racing each other...

    just watched Alinghi with the new foils and arms and the lack of spray (drag) was hugely different to ETNZ...cant wait to see our new flying kit installed.

    • @robertbaird4822
      @robertbaird4822 Před 11 dny

      Alinghi had no spray because they had no speed

    • @nickseaton6920
      @nickseaton6920 Před 10 dny

      Beware of the sandbagging, Alinghi have always had good sailors and boats...hopefully not as good as ours.

  • @walteroess8023
    @walteroess8023 Před měsícem +2

    This is quite some wind , I guess around 25 knots! Amazing performance!! Altough, the boat sails most of the time not perfectly upright, slightly inclined leewards. Due to high winds, or intentional because of new shaped foils?

    • @JustinMitchellTV
      @JustinMitchellTV  Před měsícem

      THe nearest reading to where they were showed up to 20kts... I think they just try different modes with different foil arm positions... and sometimes this means being more to leeward or more to windward... we won't see the new foils until Barcelona.

    Thanks again for the footage mate, I wonder what was with the starboard foil dipping a couple pf times there on that long last leg to the right, saw it drop a couple of times then appear to raise again. Possibly could be some sort of parallax illusion. I don't know.

    • @actiaint
      @actiaint Před měsícem

      could it be deliberate to extend weight/leverage?

    • @JustinMitchellTV
      @JustinMitchellTV  Před měsícem

      THanks! I just saw the recon team asked the same question... Nathan O said it was nothing... but when the dip the foil like that I'm sure it has a change in balance effect and also a lift effect from it being partially in the water

    Even though it is now the Kiwi normal it is impossible to get used to giant rooster-tails behind a yacht.

    Hi Justin, who do you think the crew are out there today, would have thought Burling and co would all be on their way to Bermuda by now for this weekend's Sail GP. Or did they jump off Taihoro sometime today and dash to the airport?

      Presumably, they have to take a break from that to focus on AC at some point? I would struggle to see you could do either job well enough as part timers

      @JustinMitchellTV  Před měsícem +2

      thanks mate... funny, a few people have aske this today 🤣 I suppose we'll have to wait for the recon interview but I imagine the A team need to be driving the 75 for this testing... maybe they've decided not to get to Bermuda til Fri training sailgp... or maybe they'll just get there for thurs arvo in bermuda ... could be on the plane now... they sometimes don't get to do thurs and/or friday training sessions with sail gp anyway...

    • @rogerprout5574

      Picking you are correct, there are 2 fliguts leaving shortly, one to LA and another direct to Houston, then another flight to Bermuda and then straight in to F50 practice. I can't see Nathan wanting to miss a days practice for the Swiss sail GP team though am picking Nathan left yesterday and wasn't sailing in today's clip. @JustinMitchellTV

    So.awesome the kiwis introduce foiling monos to the Americas cup. Once again New Zealand does it first. We all should be so proud that our country punches well above our weight.

      @@actiaint When I compare it to Te Rehutai I never felt that chase boat was struggling to keep up with her. Maybe it's just me but it appears that chase boat has to work much harder to keep up under certain wind angles.
