  • The long and storied history of Florida's most under-appreciated fish is explored, including its importance as a food source for Native Americans, Spanish explorers and early Florida pioneers, as well as the rise and fall of Florida's commercial mullet fishing industry in the 20th century.

Great video and documentary. I grew up in Tampa Bay, next door to Bush Gardens and Smoked Mullet was something to be desired like a delicacy. I left for the Army in 1976 and by the time I returned and retired from the Army in 1997, nobody had heard of Smoked Mullet. Truly a shame. I live in Texas now and nobody here has ever heard of eating Mullet.

Excellent and very informative video. Been in Florida since I was 9yo and am 68 now. I
have eaten Mullet since I moved here and started catching them off the beach and bridges in the St Augustine area. Now I live in Sebastian a fishing community like Cortez and I eat it as much as I can when I have access. Thanks for this video.

Maybe the market for mullet could be jumpstarted like the way king crab was marketed in New England.
King crab was sold in grocery stores for $0.99/lb. back in the 60s. This was to get people to try the product as an alternative to lobster...

I ate a smoked mullet made at a fish shop in St. Augustine. I found it quite boney. However, I'll give it another chance because of this video. I don't know anybody who targets this fish unless they're targeting bait for another species.

People still ate mullet in the 80s and 90s at least in the south because they are a delicious fish fried and smoked and the roe are prized around the world. Gill net bans put many fishermen and families out of business and now as he says mullet are in high above average numbers now that nobody eats them except along coastal areas. I live in Gulf coast and when the grocery stores empty out and people are starving to death, all these mullet are available.

Pictures of floating dead fish are from red tide which is the main cause of all marine life in south Florida not to be sustainable. It has become extremely exacerbated since the start of the 21 century, all due to over development, 151 golf course alone in SWFL, none which are regulated on how much fertilizer they us, more per capita then anywhere else in the United States. Ad all that with all the non-native landscaping of Yankees vacation homes growing in the sandy beach soils on our barrier islands and coasts. Yankees will love Florida to death. Our riches don’t come from gold or silver as we are enriched by the gulf, sounds and estuaries that were and now narrowly a way of life for us fisherfolk, many which have left due to the foreseen horrible future of our once promise land.😢 will the last Florida fisherfolk please bring the flag with them when they leave, the one who’s past generations took a gamble on this state many moons ago.
