This is the new BMW i5. This is the m60 version with the 590 HP twin motor drivetrain. This i5 has all the Characteristics of the Ultimate Driving Machine and really lives up to the name. Mediocre range of 250-280 miles makes it a poor performing car if you care solely about mileage, range anxiety is a real threat to this cars sales performance.
The i5 follows the normal 5 series styling inside and out, making it, well a normal car. There’s not indicators that this is an electrified vehicle apart from the blue BMW symbols and the single “Boost” paddle shifter to unlock god mode within the powertrain. The proportions are great and though styling is a subjective matter, this one is beginning to grow on me. Lesson learned; an electric car can be normal inside and out without any quirky or weird design and style.
The large panoramic moon roof and excess cabin space really make this a comfortable and spacious car for those with families. Great head and leg room in both rows of seats with super comfortable seats and great driving feel make this for a good commuter for any business professional.
The car overall is excellent but I found a few negatives that bothered me. The price tag of $94,000 is excessive and well would be a “sticker shock” for any vehicle, electric or not. Range anxiety is a real thing for consumers, and this one having sub 300 mile range is not acceptable, especially when Tesla does it for cheaper. The lack of ventilated seats at the price point is shocking and not okay.
Apart from that, great tech, a well put together interior with superior driving characteristics make this a really good BMW. Taking a step back and going beyond the few negatives, this really is a good car that should be on the list of electric cars for those looking.
