- This is one , if not the only, place in Australia to see manned Helpers pushing trains upgrade, and even more rare is to see the helper units detach on the fly! This all takes place at Ardglen , New South Wales , on the Liverpool Range.

That’s a great scenic view. Beautiful country. That’s a quiet passenger train. Nice unit train too. You always catch the good stuff. Thank you for sharing. Cheers.
Thanks Bob! I find these trains a bit boring ...especially after being at Tehachapi and Mullan Pass !! But it's better than where I live ..LOL. It is nice country through here and there are usually grain and general freight trains , but I missed them on this visit.
Cheers Gregg.
Nice video I enjoyed it ty cheers👍👍
Thank you Jess! Glad you liked it.
Gregg :-)
I recently found out that this coal line supports 30 tons per axle, something that should be normalized in grain lines and thus bring more grain to the loading ports; but that would be impossible due to logistics and money costs
good video bro 🇦🇺🇦🇺. Greetings from Mexico 🇲🇽
Thank you ! Yes , we are in the dark ages down here...LOL. Even the new "Inland Rail Project" is only being built to 25 tonne axle loads , which is crazy IMO. Heavy axle loads also allow heavier locos, which can pull more for the same HP ! We might catch up one day??
Greetings to you in Mexico !
Cheers Gregg.
I like seeing manned helpers. They becoming a thing of the past. Excellent video Gregg.
Thank you ! I don't know anywhere else they do it down here on a regular basis? Grain trains also get pushed here on occasion as well, but Imiseed them on this trip.
Cheers Gregg.
@@FishplateFilms In Pennsylvania, USA they are still using manned helpers on the mainline over Horseshoe Curve. Their numbers are dwindling with use of DPU's. I have many videos with SD40E helpers on Norfolk Southern's Pittsburgh Line.
@@iusetano That is neat , I hear rumours that UP are considering manned helpers on Tehachapi as the need for DPU's are only for the Pass? I will take a look at your clips!
Gregg :-)
Hey Gregg... Thanks for another outstanding production! I always enjoy your work...
Hi Charlie, thank you Sir! I appreciate the kind words and glad you enjoy the videos.
CHeers Gregg.
THANK YOU...for sharing. WOW, now that was a push!
It is and thanks again for watching!
Cheers Gregg
Train movements the average person will never see, thanks for posting. Video is very clear. Cheers Greg
Thanks Gregory! The older footage on the "Willow Tree Helpers" is even more unique, as you could watch the helpers attach ! It's all a bit sterile now.
Cheers Gregg.
Hello, thanks for another great adventure. Your landscape is so similar to Southern California, it could easily double for it. Thanks, again for sharing. See ya next time.
You'e welcome Norman! As I travelled through California in 2015, I did notice that some of the landscape did look a lot like home, especially in San Diego..I could of been back in Brisbane !
Thanks for watching!
Cheers Gregg.
Those things seem like powerhouses! Great catches!
They are about the same as the US models, but lighter as our axel weights are less down here on most lines.
If I remember right , they are about 4300 HP .
Thanks for watching.
Gregg.
Great footage Gregg top stuff mate !
Thanks Paul! Glad you enjoyed it !
Gregg.
Excellent video Greg 😁👍🇬🇧
Thank you Tony! Glad you liked it.
Gregg :-)
2.5% is a pretty hefty grade! I can see why they would need helpers! Thanks for posting this, Gregg!
You can really see the grade and it's impressive to think all that tonnage can make it over!
Thank you for watching!
Gregg.
Great video mate :)
Thank you ! If you like it, you can watch the series on "Quirindi Coal TRains" !
Cheers Gregg.
Nice work Gregg. I was there only two weeks ago looking around - inspired by one of your earlier videos.
Thank you Peter! Lucky you... I have a 2 day drive to get there..LOL Did you see any of Crawfords trains or grain? I saw nothing but coal for 5 days on this trip;_( I was over it by the end!
Cheers Gregg
Plenty of coal as usual. A lot of grain is going up to Werris Creek and Narrabri via the inland route from Victoria (feed grain). Now the drought has eased there will probably be decent crop heading back south to Newcastle on this line through Ardglen in summer (start planning your trip). I didn't see Crawfords on that trip but I do see them through Maitland often enough. A good spot is the Crawfords terminal at Sandgate (Newcastle). The Crawfords livery c44ACi plus various CFCLA leased locos can be seen including ELs.
@@peterainsworth8466 I was wondering when the grain runs over the hill? I am looking at coming back down to try and get more grain and Crawfords ? I was thinking late November or January? What do you think Peter? Also may combine that with a revisit to Gunning in the Highlands?
Cheers Gregg.
i just checked ,could you make up a playlist of all the Willow street Bankers? there all over the shop otherwise.
I don't know why, but of all of the Australian freight railroad companies, I love the Pacific National livery the most. The QR National livery would best my second favorite.
Cool video Gregg, besides the locomotives.....it almost looks like Tehachapi. :) Bob
And all the cool freight cars you have Bob!! "Almost" but not quite..LOL The track is the same gauge !!
Thanks again for watching sir.
Gregg.
I like your Coal Hopper...
Nice operation there Gregg! Do they use lots of sand for traction there? Beautiful country! Looks like a good place for backpack camping. Stay safe! Cheers, Danny
Thank you Danny! You can see the dust from the sand as the locos pass under the bridge! They do sand a bit but modern traction control limits the amount of sand used and the helps don't seem to sand much at all..though there is heaps lying on the ballast! No camping allowed I think through here, but there are some camp grounds nearby.
Gregg :-)
Another great video Greg. Any chance of get the loading & unloading of these one way trains? Do they have a balloon line at ether end to keep em one way around. Private property to private property. That explains very little graffiti.
Thanks Philip! No chance at either end I'm afraid..the loading is on the mines property and unloading is at the Port and yes, there are loops at either end.
Thanks for watching sir.
Gregg.
Hi Gregg. Curious about the rolling stock. I don’t see much in the way of reporting marks, dimensional data or logos. Is all that info squeezed into that small area on the left hand side of the cars (hard to read as the cars are passing by). Are they privately owned or provided by the railway? Also, what is the significance of the “TT” in the EMD locomotive road numbers?
Hi Sheldon, nice to hear from you! These trains are permanently coupled , and only go from mine to port. There are some details on that small label , like weight and car type and they are all owned by the railway company. "TT" stands for "Tonnage transferable" and stands for the different weights that are available for different class of track. We have a lot of old lightweight rail down here and skimp on sleeper /tie spacing , so even most heavy haul lines are only 25 ton axel weight!
Cheers Gregg.
Interesting. Thanks Gregg.
Cool video, not many manned helpers in North America. Thanks to DPU’s. Is that a bridge with the handrails by the tracks? Never have seen anything like that. How’s the tunnel portal project? Stay warm down there. It’s been nice here. Cheers from Terry in Nebraska.
Thanks Terry! The bridge at the 1.00 min mark is a walkway for the crew to get on and off locos if the use the loop. It looks like it is a bit low so water may run through when it rains? I'm doing a video this week but still not happy with the portals yet! Rainy and windy now , always is in August..LOL. Enjoy the nice weather Terry!
Gregg :-)
This is for Country link and Pacific National 1:20
Next time you’re in NSW you should try & get some of the SSR workings, 4x C’s have been used on coal lately. Certainly better than muted GE’s
I won't be back down for a while Rhys, but I would love to catch a lot more of SSR trains! 4 C class sure beats new power any day!
Cheers Gregg.
very nice footage -is it near Pangela railway station? are they still using these helpers today? thank you
Thank you Franz! I don't know where Pangela is? Yes they are still pushing trains up the range here.
Cheers Gregg.
@@FishplateFilms hello Gregg -just googled Ardglen -about 1km after the tunnel it showed the train station symbol Pangela -later you mentioned Quirindi videos -watched all of them and there you showed the camera positions perfectly -my guess was only a bit off :) -
Ahhhh, PN and flat wheels, they go together like Vegemite and cheese on toast.
Waiting For The Loaded Pacific national 3:13
Those locos are too quiet! You’d think they were electric rather than diesel-electric. (Good to see the old Disco still going strong, at least with climate you don’t have to watch your cars rusting away in front of you like I do with own Pommy shitters!)
I know!! The fun police are taking the fun out of life these days! I was hoping to catch some grain trains, as they have older power on them usually, but no luck on this trip! The Disco is still going welland I hope to keep it as long as I can as I don't like the new ones as much :-). No salt down here except on the beaches..which I stay away from..LOL
Thanks for watching.
Gregg .
FishplateFilms not surprised you stay away from the beaches, the sharks and crocs in the water and sun-bathers out of the water make them a terrifying prospect.
@@struck2soon LOL...I'm more concerned about the rust !!
All look line class NR's to me LOL . . .
They sure do! Everything is so boring now!
Thanks for watching.
Gregg.
Ta BUD interesting
Thanks Robbie!

LOL...I've almost run out of US clips Joe! I was hoping to get back early next year, but that seems unlikely at the moment??
