Here is a question, why doesnt NEST have control over HRV? These are mandatory on all newer homes over the past decade. Its one of the reasons why i cant use nest thermostat. Also, why must the system mode be on 'heat or cool' in order to just turn on the fan?

Putting more than one wire into a Nest thermostat connector can damage your system and your thermostat. Instead of using jumper wires, Nest Learning Thermostats use an internal jumper between the Rh and Rc connectors. I don't really understand how a "smart" thermostat helps save money? For example, I set my thermostat to 70 degrees and leave it at that when the temperatures start to fall (late October where I live) and it stays at that temperature until mid-spring. Why would I want my thermostat to shut off when I am not at home only to come to a house that is cold. Or let's say I set it up to turn on an hour before I am supposed to be home to have the heating system work longer in order to increase the home temp to 70 (where I am comfortable). It seems like it's pretty unnecessary as long as you have a thermostat that can turn off/on at a set temp, the additional wifi, and phone features are "nice" but not significant money savers...right? You can save significant money if you put on some layers and learn to tolerate a home temperature around 68-70 degrees. If you're comfortable at 80 then you're gonna spend more money maintaining a warm house.
Why does everything have to be done with a person's phone and email. Their app wants to monitor my home via my email. All I want is to install a thermostat and not some system that wants to read my emails and monitor my home.
