I did not know any of this I should probably get one for my impression then :O
Great video! Excellent point on the braided cord. My enduring memories of paternosters in re-enactment are of groups of re-enactors bent double picking through grass and straw for dropped beads. It's one of those things where it's not enough to find 90% of them. You really need them all!
I think it this experience that many people avoid buying them for this reason.
Just 3 days before you launch your video, I made a lecture (with workshop) about paternoster. I got surprised as you made the video covering material aspects of the middle age. Only few do that being clear as a bright day, and you are one. Every video that you make is awesome! Always continue your work and research. My Reenactment group in Brasil are fan of your work!
PS: I also make some paternoster here in Brasil, they are a good form to pass time and help novices in Reenactment getting good materials.
I would love to know more about the lecture, that sounds great. This video was a last minute idea, so interesting how that happens.
We definitely will keep making these videos, thank you for your support.
Showing people how to make easy things is a great way to get them involved and interested in authenticity.
Have you considered getting in contact with The Turnip of Terror? He's a reenacter from somewhere in USA and he started a podcast for reenactors called Medieval how-two. I think you and him would make really good combination since both of you are really into everyday objects and details :)
Thanks for the tip, yes we are in contact he and I appear to have similar aims.
This is off topic, but i just wanted to say that you have a truly magnificent mustache.
Very informative and interesting video!

Have just found your channel after looking for information on Pater Noster beads. I will be subscribing and watching your other videos. As a, currently inactive, SCA member these are a vital part of daily life but never seem to garner a mention nowadays. Thank you very much and I for one would appreciate a further video going into the subject at a greater length.

Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it, we really try to shine a light on the forgotten or under represented parts of medieval history. There are topics such as this one that we would like to revisit. We did a follow up video on this on how to weave some common paternoster types, but as always there is more to revisit.
Hello,
The Mequetaria which was developed by the Desert Fathers, and is one of the very early precursors of both the Pater Noster, (and by extension the Rosary,) is knotted. Therefore, I am compelled to ask you folks if there are any extant examples of knotted Pater Nosters ?
Respectfully,
Seth.
I cannot find any extant examples of the knotted Paternoster, although there are literary accounts of them.
@@PopulaUrbanum thank you very much. I suppose that makes sense considering what they would have been made of. Have a nice night.
No problem, I have read that they were made if knotted wool, if that is helpful
@@PopulaUrbanum It is, thank you. In that respect then, they are similar to the Mequetaria, which is traditionally wool, leather, or if you have the money silk.
The prayer was not just “Our Father” but also “Ave Maria”
Totally filler, but good filler! 😆 I'm keen to see you expand on this!
Hahaha, yes I think this could do with some more work in the near future, we have a couple of videos to get done, after the event so this will definitely get a revisit I think.
Will you be shooting video at your event? I totally understand if you want to re-enact instead, but interested to see the event and to see how you come at participating and filming.
I thought about it, but we are just going to enjoy the event and meet people I think. The logistics of filming is something I need to figure out later.
PROVIDE A LIST OF THE PATER NOSTER PSALMS. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO RECITE THEM.
don't stress about medieval Latin - from my understanding there were different regional forms. Of course a medieval pope might make you stand outside in the snow if it's really, really bad.
That is a small kindness compared to my latin teacher who was far harsher when I would mess up pronunciation.
@@PopulaUrbanum probably a Dom into rules... if you enjoyed it then I guess it's consensual so that's ok right ;-) remove this comment if not appropriate (but what do you expect from me)
Would love to see more on the use of the Pater Noster and other conspicuous (and non-conspicuous) articles of Medieval faith. Thanks for the video!
This is something that we are considering exploring in the future it seems to be sorely overlooked
Western Rite Orthodox Christians are trying to help them make a comeback.
