    Really well done Evan.
    so for the printing part, watch out that your send volume is at unity. That's basically the same way I do it. I've also figured out a way to print to the same track, which is too many steps to list here, but can work really well as long as there aren't a bunch of splits on the original source media.
    You can also disable full-speed-offline in the render window and set to 1x online to render the mix through the hardware. Necessary for master fx.

      Jon PLEASE make a video on this!!!
      Evan like me and many others have interfaces with 16 plus channels of I/O, and many pieces of outboard gear.
      Your videos were great, as are the others out there, but incomplete as to this step.
      Printing back through ReaInsert to the Same channels, as Takes, then hiding the Original takes and de-activating ReaInsert is what we need whether manual or scripted.
      The comments in All of these videos come back to this but I can’t find a video showing how to set it up.
      Obviously Evan if you figure it out I’d love to see your video walking us through it as well.
      This one is the most clear of all the dozen I’ve seen so far, and a Part 2 would be fantastic.
      TIA Brothas!

    Thanks...I have a rather unique set-up and while my external gear isn't here yet...I'm trying to prepare myself as much as possible in advance.
    There is definitely some good info in this video. However, my situation is that I have a desktop interface with no extra sends or receives. But I also have an X32 Rack. So that will be my new interface going forward. I know the easy route is to use the aux ins and outs. However, I don't believe that those show up in Reaper.
    I know running into a couple channels is the work around for that. But what I am unsure of, is if the aux outs will work to feed the external hardware or not. The X32 has infinitely versatile routing and so does Reaper.
    I expect this to be a bit of a 'Journey' for sure!

    I have recently set up a separate mixing/ mastering station in my studio with an SSL Big Six, SSL Fusion, SSL Bus+, SSL UC1 and SSL UF8. • @crhkrebs
    @crhkrebs Před 8 měsíci

    Bit late to the party, but I would say to make presets in ReaInsert for all your effects. This way you can call up your, for example, compressor with the inputs, outputs, levels and latency compensation already made. I find it best to “ping” again as my system’s latency for my outboard gears sometimes changes.

    Great instructional video ! I have a ton of vintage outboard that I track with never mixed with, but this is something I have wanted to do for some time ,and had to get my head around. I spent all day yesterday trying to send out a signal into a Hologram Microcosm pedal for one part using ReaInsert and my ID 44 using outputs 3 and 4 and still have not been able to get a return signal no matter what I did. This was just a test to see if I could get this system working. I was pulling my hair out with the routing. The ID44 wants to send the audio out ThruDaw which I did but still no return. Going to explore more today and see if I can figure this out. I have a Metric Halo ADDA coming in a few days and hope I have this routing sorted before then. I have a vintage Pultec EQ that will really sweeten an overall mix if I can get this routing sorted. Thanks for your effort and clear explanation.

      Did you ever get it figured out? I have an ID44 and I want to run VST synths through my guitar pedals live. Trying to figure out how to do that so that I can play the VST synth in real time while it sends through the guitar pedals and then back into the ID44 for recording.

    • @owlmeetscatofficialpage593
      @owlmeetscatofficialpage593 Před rokem +1

      @@sbenson76 I did end up getting Reinsert to work but not with the ID44. I was upgrading my ADDA at the time and went with the Metric Halo ULN2 3d and got that up and running and able to mix with my outboard and reamp with my pedals etc with no latency. It took a bit to understand my new workflow but I got there in the end. I am sure I would have figured out how to do it with the ID44 had I stuck with it. The main thing would be to set up your alt outputs and run those out to your pedals,(be careful there as far as volume and feedback loops) and then run them back into your system via your normal 1 and 2 preamp inputs. From memory I had to go into Reapers preferences and go to Audio, the input and out put alias/naming and organize my inputs and outputs. After that when you are in Reinsert you need to set your output buss and your input, in my case it was send 3 and 4, and returns 1 and 2. Take your synth track and make a track below it, and send the vst signal there while taking the original synth out of the mix. Arm the track. Set your input on that track to input 1. Now send your signal and you should see your signal returning. Now go ahead and ping it, and it should correct the latency automatically and you are good to go. Even did a much better job of explaining this in his vid, but I am happy to chime in and help you get going. It's frustrating not being able to figure something out quickly as it kills the vibe of creation. Good luck and let me know if you sort it out.

My question is, so if I want to use the outboard gear , pre, eq, comp for tracking , and mixing . How would I do that? Say I have multiple tracks like chorus and adlibs and want to change the EQ on the outboard gear on that track ? If I change the setting on the outboard gear it would change it on the other track ? How does the daw save those specific settings on an outboard gear for individual tracks? I can’t wrap my head around this.??

      You know I've only been mixing with the gear for 2 weeks or so. I did notice that when I print, the audio can be 1 to 3 samples off (which doesn't seem like a huge deal) but I suppose it could make a difference over time with a bunch of tracks. I'll look into it and see if I can figure out a solution. An excuse for another video...;)

    • @StudioERecording
      @StudioERecording Před rokem

      I print a lot of stuff through hardware using reaper. I actually haven't found a real use for Reainsert because I just use the hardware output section on the MCP. To get around delay compensation I'll put a sound like a click track click in the beginning or end of the original track and print that through the hardware then manually line the waves up in the TCP. It may not be an airtight way to do it, but unless you're only printing one channel of a multimic'd drumset or something horribly phase coherency dependent it will probably be fine. It works better for me because you can just line them up visually and don't have to figure out what the exact offset is.

      It only took me 2 years, but I figured it out today! I'm using the Focusrite 2i2 and the 2 "stereo outs" are combined with the front headphone jack. Using both creates a feedback loop of sending and monitoring, so I just unplugged my headphones. On the 4i4 unit, monitoring is set to 3/4 by default so you can't send from 3/4 and monitor UNLESS you go into the Focusrite software and re-route monitoring to 1/2. Hope this helps with whatever setup you have!

    I’ve changed my mind about Reaper in the past month. However, I still consider Ableton to be superior, because of LOM, Max integration, Session view and the overall workflow ergonomics. Though, Lua/Python scripting sounds quite good! In Ableton you can accomplish most of the scripting tasks with ClyphX Pro, if you’re looking for similar functionality.

    Ok so after many frustrating hours of trying to get a decent signal through send and returns from HW to Interface through ADAT, Ive come to the conclusion that this is basically not going to work. Also, in this day and age with advances in plug in quality and fidelity I just can't see a reason to use inferior external 30 year old hardware. I think Reainsert is a failed attempt at routing sends and returns between hardware devices. Yes I did follow the steps in this video and it simply does not work. I'm unplugging and shelving my old (lousy sounding hardware devices) and boxing them up. Sorry I wasted so much time on it .I guess its 2 days I'll never get back ....
