I took the test years ago, and failed it, I think, 4/15th of the way. I have a lot of call center experience, and graduated from Cal State LA, with a background in Psychology and Social and Behavioral Science. I’d love to work for 911. It will always be a position that I’ll never have and so, I have to live with that. All those calling in, I hope you are well. 🕊️
That test is strictly listening, memory, putting things in its correct order and following directions. The majority of if not all come into that job with just a high school diploma. They are continuously testing for PSR, once you pass request a tour so when you interview you will have an idea of how the set up looks, meet with some of the captains and supervisors. The tour really made me decide on if I wanted that job or not. I didn’t

After, chose to work in homelessness, but I quit after 7 days b/c I seen corruption. Karen Bass cut the ribbon for the homeless nonprofit, I worked for. It was in the heart of DTLA. Was told about 80 people have died, since my depart. It was 20, when I was there. Dark drugs were used on the premises and it was ignored. Opted to work for other nonprofits, but felt they were potentially the same. Finland used California’s idea, but took it further. A lot further. It’s a long term issue. Not short term. They also assist with helping them become productive members of society. Finlands approach has been successful. For me, there is no amount of money I can be paid to not help people. Which means, I can’t be bought. Currently, I’ll be with DPSS. Still serving my community. Cannot believe how hard it is to actually help people. I have an idea why, but that’s another story. Thank you! My life is to serve people. Paying it forward. Even though I have struggled.

I understand what you were saying totally there is a lot of corruption !!! My passion is public safety from a young age and I see many individuals in public safety that truly do it for the benefits and pay!!! And on top of that there are some members of public safety that truly don’t have the best interest to serve the public!!! I wish I can go into detail, but I am not able TO!!! Not saying a person needs education. All anyone really needs, is a heart. From my view, once money is transactional, it becomes less valuable. PSR’s make 6 figures. They are paid well. It’s just a very stressful job and requires a serious commitment. Rotating hours. All that calling off work won’t be tolerated. I work with many people who were once PSR’s, they decided on another city career that does not require you to turn over your life

The LAPD has always had a shortage of police officers and PSR’s even when I worked there 30+ years ago. Things never change due to politics and horrible chain of command/command staff. It’s always the same complaints. The only positive thing is they created new dispatch centers through out the city finally rather than in the basement of city hall like it used to be. It’s a very hard job and I gotta give it up to those that hang in there!
Can you rent a 1 bd apartment with 33% of the post tax wages for the job? The starting salary is 58k which after taxes is about 29k which if I divide by 12 and take 33% is $800 a month? Any 1 bd apartments available in LA for $800? A studio. How about 50% your take home thats about 1.2k a month and 50% means you will have trouble saving for retirement ect. Any 1 Bd in LA for 1.2k?
If they can do the job I'd welcome them. There are a lot of jobs that Americans have decided are "beneath them." A lot of those jobs are important. If migrants are willing and able to do the job, get em a headset and I'll train them.
12? We work 16s at my center. As for whats wrong with 8s? Nothing - if you have the staffing to cover 8 hour shifts. Thats where the issue is. Additionally, a lot of us prefer 12s and that extra day off. Ideally I'd love to move to 4 10s. But again. With staffing levels so low, those shifts are not possible for most centers.
Provide a campus of dorms for them to live in for dirt cheap (or free) yet still pay them desirable wages, and there will be far applicants than you need - the next day.

I made it all the way to orientation years ago and decided not to go through with it. My mother was an RTO for years before she became a police officer.. she loved it. RTO’s communicated with the officers only.

America is failing in this generation because in my generation we had basic medical training in middle school and in high school you have to pass the class too . They taught CPR and the Heimlick maneuver a long with a lot of normal medical emergency procedures that can be used at home but now in days they don’t teach that anymore you have to take a class to get a authentication that you completed the course in order to apply for a 911 dispatch but back in the 90s 80s 70s you only needed a high school diploma and you just took a test to see if you would pass the test . If you look at the requirements of what they need to make you qualify on your resume is all big degrees like background in nurse or criminal justice , psychology .. the list goes on so you really think people with that type of degree is going to apply as a 911 dispatcher they rather go do their degree job .
And yet we have very few if any applicants. We cant even get a decent amount of people for pre hire orientation - the only requirement for that is literally just to sign up online. We have shortages in ems and police too. I question how hard your friends are looking.
