  • Always good to catch up with Blake from Yamaha, they were showing the new MODX+ which takes the MODX range and pushes it closer to the flagship Montage while retaining the lower price point. MODX+ adds more FlashRom - taking it up to e1.75GB, adds more voices - 128 AWM2 and 128 FMX as well.
    Blake tinkled the ivories for us.

    The smart morph demoed doesn't really interest me, but I do have a suggestion Blake if your reading. How about making the option to use the touch screen as a large ribbon controller! That would be awesome, and seems to easy to implement. I always wanted to have a long ribbon controller like the CS-80 offers, but those small ribbon controllers like say the one on the Montage seem kind of limiting. The touch screen area is much larger, and you could make it so the user could adjust how sensitive they want the ribbon to be. This could be a future flash OS upgrade to the MODX. Offer another important controller that would be even better than the ribbon on the Montage, and it's available to MODX & Montage users. How about it?

      the Nautilus is a much worse offender there, Korg overdid it and the interface is clunky, plus the whole keyboard seems to have an under-powered CPU, making the interface a little sluggish overall (most especially in the sequencer mode) versus the Krome EX, Kross2, and the older M50 workstation keyboard I've got, it's pretty annoying, but damn does it sound awesome

    Tell Yamaha to put daw were no computer needed like a recording studio set out like Akai mpc and two mics that's all that will make the keyboard better and edit drum kits and save them as voices and use better mics to record while making there voices I think Geno's is done by theatre mics which loses its richness and no power comes out of the speakers

      You have to load them into the flash rom. Not sure if you need a USB storage or a computer to make that happen

    Why zero updates for the Montage this year? I think that with the release of the Regen many FM lovers will prefer and buy the Synclavier...or...why Yamaha doesn't buy the Synclavier company and design a new synth with fresh ideas? I'm tired to listen to DX7 pianos...

    • @jno8039
      @jno8039 Před rokem +2

      Just program your sound. The problem is the bank and demonstration. FMX can do amazing sound. The Synclavier isn't just FM, it's another concept. I you are looking for a beast of FM. Look after Essence FM.

    • @classicarcadeamusementpark4242

      The closest competition, the Fantom 0, has only 256 mgs (1/4 of 1 gig). Very few keyboards on the market have more than 1.75 gigs. Sure some Korg's have an SDD drive in them (and a 3 minute boot time vs the MODX 15 second boot time), but that is not typical of most synths on the market.
      Surely I wouldn't mind having more, but you can still do plenty in 1.75 gigs. I pair my MODX with a laptop running soft synths as no keyboard on the market can produce all the sound engines of VST synths. And it also gives me tons of sample memory when I need it.
      The MODX + laptop full of VST's = a very powerful, economical, light weight setup.

    • @TheLawapa99
      @TheLawapa99 Před rokem +1

      That usb connection gives you all the 16 tracks into cubase. You can run audio tracks thru the vast effects internally. Pare this with a computer/cubase.

    • @Jason75913
      @Jason75913 Před rokem +2

      no keyboard had 1.75gb of sample memory in 2002, or remotely close to, as far as I know

    • @TheLawapa99
      @TheLawapa99 Před rokem +1

      My Montage does, and the new modx+ does as well. The plain modx has 1 gig. Google the specs.

    • @classicarcadeamusementpark4242
      @classicarcadeamusementpark4242 Před rokem +2

      The leading keyboards in 2002 were the Korg Triton & the Yamaha MOTIF original.
      The MOTIF has 84MB of rom wave memory that couldn't be changed, and I think 0 megs of sample ram to add your own samples. I don't think the next model (ES) had any either. It wasn't until the XS model in 2007 that added any user sample memory.
      The 2002 model of the Korg Triton (Triton Studio) had 32 megs of rom wave memory and I'm not sure if it included any sample memory to load your own samples, but it could be expanded up to 96 megs (probably for a lot of extra money).
      1 gig = 1024 megs.
      So there ya go. The leading synths didn't have "anywhere" near 1.75 gigs of user sample memory in 2002.

    Yamaha has abandoned the Montage. They are picking the carcass clean by building up the MODX. There has been ZERO innovation on improving the synth, all 'new' things are just ancient stuff found on the Montage. All the engineers have left the company. The UI SUCKS. Just a grid of boxes with numbers in them, no ability to use the touch screen to slide values. No modern graphics or animations to make programing easier. Just use the data wheel like we did 30 years ago. A big 'feature' is a huge 1.75 GB memory. Do they still make modules that small in 2022? Back in the 1970s that was a lot of memory today it is joke and shows the mentality of Yamaha management. I'm waiting for the White version of the MODX. I'm sure it will be sooo much better. Yamaha is a joke. Meanwhile KORG is releasing real advancing features for their synths. I'm sure Yamaha will buy a new technology soon and let it stagnate for decades. Korg do FM better than the inventors, they make it easy to program and understand on a tiny B&W screen. All we get from Yamaha is just more preset algos and confusing wave naming.
    Spend you hard earned with a company that cares. ie NOT Yamaha.

      i mean some of this is valid but i mean i get good sound out of mine at the end of the day

    • @Jason75913
      @Jason75913 Před rokem

      More than a few MB of memory for samples has been super rare before the turn of the century, and now that memory is cheaper than ever, they skimp on memory anyway. The "1970s" hyperbole is a little too over-the-top to make you look good, to put it kindly.
      The little boutique companies are more about innovation, alternatively Arturia and Novation, but I don't feel that is a strength of Korg. Or Roland. Or Yamaha. Those three are more dependent on other things.
      Also, MODX is the top-selling stage rompler along with the Roland Juno-DS. Casio and Korg fall a little further behind. At least Korg actually does make dedicated synths and in a little variety, while Yamaha doesn't give a hoot and Roland just repackages old VAs, lol

    • @classicarcadeamusementpark4242
      @classicarcadeamusementpark4242 Před rokem +5

      The MODX+ doesn't really claim to be an all new synth. It's a basic upgrade which includes almost double the main (90% of the upgrade), and far less important, 128 polyphony FM-X engine. When you remember the DX-7 was only 16, 64 still sounds like plenty of those kind of sounds. There may be a few TX-816 patches that would benefit sure, but I think it would be the rare exception that is going to matter much. Or if it's you only synth and your doing a lot of sequencing trying to multi-track a whole band's worth of parts on just a single keyboard.
      Most new synths on the market are just re-issues of the older technology with a few new things about them.

    SAME shit a little bit different. WTF? AGAIN not a Montage mk2 ?????? What the hell is wrong with Yamaha?

    • @briandolson2941
      @briandolson2941 Před rokem

      Quite simple. They are not making enough money on synths/workstations. They are making their money on Digital pianos, so that's where the R&D money goes.
