What the reporter failed to mention was why the riots started. He said nothing condoned the violence against the Muslim group of young men. I was there and the violence started because the Muslim young men would come down to the beaches regularly from the western suburbs by train. Then stand on the walkway to the beach and yell rude and disgusting insults to the bikini clad girls, some topless which is legal in Australia, sunning on the sand. The girls complained about this to the beach guard who approached the gang asking them to move on. The gutless gang set upon the lone life guard, seriously injuring him and beating him severely. A group of young Aussie men saw this and came to the lifeguards rescue, attacking the gang of Lebanese men. From there the news quickly spread of the incident and soon every available and angry Aussie man was out for revenge. The Aussies had enough of it in their own country. If the police and authorities had done their job in the first place this would never have happened.
The thing about the riots, a lot of the Lebanese that were causing were probably kids from their teens to their 20’s imitating. It wasn’t from their culture or their parents, it was probably from their older brothers and cousins who were involved in gang activity. They were all wannabes who didn’t know who they really were. I use to see all the time growing in predicament Lebanese suburb in Sydney. They use sus me out sometimes, they’d ask what natio (ethnic heritage)I am. My heritage was Italian then they’d leave me alone. The riots really blew out of control in that part of Sydney. Then there was the mess in Maroubra which had. Nothing to do with them. It’s actually embarrassing to think of it. That’s my perspective of it as 16 year old when it happened.
Most of us will deny it but look a little deeper under the skin and Aussies from a colonial background still live with our colonial instilled racism against anyone dissimilar to ourselves. Not all, I have First Nations and first fleet/invasion ancestors which for a long time was a conflict of feelings. I see it in my full anglo relatives and I see the affects in my full Yuin relatives. It does exist and until we deny the denial it always will. And that's a bloody shame too, we could all do so much together if we let ourselves.

We have no problem with one of the largest populations of immigrants in the world per our population. Integration is good in Australia, but certain groups such as the Muslim community have segregated themselves. Causing rifts in the community. I must correct you, Australians get on well with the Aboriginal community. Naturally there are issues, but on the whole there is a good spirit between us. Australians are very happy with integrated immigration, what we don't have is white privilege that you stated. Those two words, white privilege themselves are racist.
