Great tennis player and and an even better human being. He was considered the "classic" tennis player similarly to how Federer is to most tennis purists. Loved his monthly instruction series in Tennis Magazine when I was a junior in the 80s.
The 1972 Wimbledon final between Smith and Nastase was considered the best ever, until the 2008 Nadal-Federer match, which some pundits preferred. Smith was a great player in singles and doubles ( unheard of, nowadays), and a real gentleman, an outstanding role model, with great integrity. In 1973, when the ATP players boycotted Wimbledon, Smith, as defending champion had the most to sacrifice, as he probably would have won again, but he supported the ATP, and abided by their decision, a truly selfless gesture, imo.
My little clique of friends in 1977 wore these but I do not think they were that common because it was not the general thing to wear trainers as fashion. In fact I remember the first trainers I ever saw in about 1967 and they were Addidas used to play football. Even in 1977 I knew I was buying a label that was unfashionable because Stan Smith was not a superstar of tennis. I never saw anyone else wear these until this decade. Having seen this video, I dug out a pair that I bought some years back. They were made in Indonesia and, if the label is correct, they are from 2001. I remember thinking disappointedly at the time, why do they only come with blue trimming not green? By the way, they have not fared well but fit like a dream and I going to wear them again because I like the beaten up look - pristine white is seriously OCD. Keep on applying whitener (can you still buy it?) until they fall apart. I stopped wearing them in about 1982 when another trend started, wearing work shoes and boots as fashion, Dr Martens. By the way, socks with Stan Smiths is deeply unfashionable - and I did play tennis in them because they were designed for that. - teaching your grandmother to suck eggs is not edifying behaviour. By the way, I think that ath-fashion is the surest evidence of an OCD society. In the early 1960s, the only 'trainer' in the UK was the plimsol and how many styles do Addidas and Nike sell at the moment? Now here is my point: it is engraved on my brain that Stan Smiths used to have an embedded red sole so from the side it was white but from the bottom, red. People used to refer to two different shoes, red and green flash and we know that green flash are a Dunlop shoe still available. I can find no evidence for red soles so, if I wrong, which shoe am I thinking of that did have a red sole in in the UK in 1977?
Who's Jayz? lol. Those tennis shoes are so uncomfortable for tennis funny enough. I rather prefer Djokovic's or Murray's, a bit expensive but worth it!
