    Only Led Zeppelin can make a song with a mandolin about the Lord of the Rings sound so epic!!

    • @justinwatch
      @justinwatch Před rokem

      That's not a mandolin. John Paul Jones was playing an oboe. And the song is about The Wizard of Oz.

      It was a mandolin! But Jimmy played it...first time ever! He borrowed JPJs mandolin. A mandolin was used by JPJ on a few Including Going To California!

    Its also important to understand context of this song on the album side. When the album was released on vinyl, it was the third song on the first side, just after Rock and Roll, and just before Stairway to Heaven. Jimmy Page carefully orchestrated how the songs flow from one to the other on each album side. After slamming you with power Rock on the first two tracks of this side, Battle of Evermore opens lightly with an acoustic feel, giving a lot of mythical lyrics as it builds up, before landing gently with an acoustic outro. This acoustic outro blends perfectly into Stairway to Heaven, which also has a gentle open to a dramatic climax. Jimmy used this song to "bridge" between the heavy rockers of Black Dog and R+R and into Stairway. When you listen to the entire album side in one sitting, it all makes perfect sense, and the overall appreciation of the tracks is enhanced.

    One of my favorite Led Zeppelin songs- the instruments are other worldly.

    @JBBOYTV , you must have incredible intestinal fortitude to only listen to these songs one at a time. Back in the day, we only had 8-track, cassettes, or vinyl albums to play, and stopping any of them at each song would have been laborious and unexacting, not to mention a royal pain in the arse. What I'm saying is that once a album was started it played until the side was over. Tektoniks Archetects (the comment prior to mine) nailed it when he said listening to the album in one sitting makes it make perfect sense and with an overall appreciation of the entirety.

    Sandy Denny on vocals, from Fairport Convention (plus her solo career), a sort of allied band to LZ (some members had been in previous bands together, they jammed together, etc)

    Sandy Denny was the perfect choice to duet with Robert Plant on This track. She fronted the folk/rock band that was already playing this kind of music. Try Tam Lin or Reynardine from Fairport's Liege & Lief album.

      Yeah...great analogy! Makes me feel that way too...I think alot has to do with Jimmy on the mandolin. It was the only time Jimmy played it I think...all other times JPJ played it!

    Aboard the Mother Ship again. This is a long way from "Good Times, Bad Times" or "Whole Lotta Love"..... expect the unexpected from The Mighty Led Zeppelin, again, it is always "Something Magical"

    Sandy Denny is the other voice. You may want to listen to some of her stuff with Fairport Convention and others with the English folk vibe. Her best known song is where does the time goe?. Definitely listen to it sometime

    Hey JMBOY! I've been enjoying your reactions & wondered if I could make a request. It was written by Canadian Buffy St. Marie in 1965, during the Viet Nam & this is sung by a guy called Donovan. It's pretty heavy, so be prepared. Thanks so much!
