If you play as Cormano, after beating El Greco he'll throw his sombrero to Cormano, who'll wear it for the rest of the game. It's a nice little extra detail.
For that detail, I've always thought that El Greco was once a companion of Cormano. Like Steve and Bob are probably brothers because of the great resemblance they have in the face... But that's just my things xD
One of the best intros of an arcade game ever, and the game itself has aged greatly and is still a blast to play. The catchphrases, a tradition of Konami at the time, give a little bit more of personality to bosses that already distinctive and fun to fight - the legendary "bury me with my money", of course.

Whoa, when I was a kid, I remember seeing this arcade machine in a cafe in the little country town I was in at the time. Only saw it the once, but remembered it pretty well for some reason. Never got past the second boss though, lol
In the console version, Simon Greedwell used to cough up money, literally. Paco Loco dropped candy, and the Chief little gems. Richard Rose dropped a dinamite after the balcony is busted; sometimes, if you timed it correctly, you could use it on him.
Could be that the others are outlaws, organized under a big outlaw, while Rose was holding something over the Chief's head, for extortion and etc. That'd explain why there was anyone around to plead for the Chief, while the others, who were bad for bad's sake, didn't have anyone who cared. That and it's just a game, and they're bosses, but that's no fun. The first thing is more interesting.

This detail blew my mind at the time... in the age in which programmers worked with passion and not to be always cost efficient
