  • Lyricist: Samuel Stennett
    Composer: Arrangement by Rigdon M. McIntosh
    This hymn was written by Samuel Stennett (1717-1795) and first appeared in Selection of Hymns (1787). There are two tunes typically paired with it but the older, and perhaps generally better known, tune (PROMISED LAND) is usually identified as an old traditional American melody or folk hymn. The tune, paired with these lyrics, seems to have been first published in Southern Harmony (1835). There, it was attributed to a “Miss M. Durham”, about whom no other information is known. Originally in the key of f-sharp minor, it was altered to F-major and the refrain added, perhaps as early as 1874, by Rigdon M. McIntosh (1836-1899). This arrangement seems to have been first published in Gospel Light (1895).

    ~Lyrics~
    1. On Jordan’s stormy banks I stand,
    And cast a wishful eye
    To Canaan’s fair and happy land,
    Where my possessions lie.
    CHORUS
    I am bound for the promised land,
    I am bound for the promised land;
    O who will come and go with me?
    I am bound for the promised land.
    2. O’er all those wide, extended plains
    Shines one eternal day;
    There God the Son forever reigns,
    And scatters night away.
    CHORUS
    3. When shall I reach that happy place,
    And be forever blest?
    When Shall I see the Father’s face,
    And in His bosom rest?
    CHORUS
