Ketika mengunjungi rumah seorang kristiani, saya melihat kata-kata ini terpampang pada sebuah hiasan dinding: "Engkau mengasihi Yesus seperti kau mengasihi orang yang paling tidak kaukasihi." Saya tersentak membaca kata-kata itu. Namun kemudian saya menemukan kata-kata serupa dalam 1 Yohanes 4:20, "Barangsiapa tidak mengasihi saudaranya yang dilihatnya, tidak mungkin mengasihi Allah, yang tidak dilihatnya."
Setelah itu saya sering mendapati diri saya mengkritik orang lain dengan mengabaikan kesalahan saya sendiri yang justru lebih mencolok. Jika saya mengasihi Yesus sebesar kasih saya terhadap orang yang saya kritik, berarti saya sedikit sekali mengasihi-Nya. Ini membuat saya sedih dan kecewa, karena sepertinya saya tidak mampu mengasihi Yesus dan sesama dengan semestinya.
Dalam 1 Yohanes 4:10, kita tahu bahwa kasih yang sejati tidak dapat diukur melalui kasih kita kepada Allah, tetapi melalui kasih-Nya kepada kita. Dia menunjukkan kedalaman kasih-Nya melalui kematian Yesus untuk menebus dosa-dosa kita. Itulah teladan kita. "Jikalau Allah sedemikian mengasihi kita, maka haruslah kita juga saling mengasihi" (ayat 11).
Kini setiap kali saya gagal mengasihi orang lain, saya memohon ampun kepada Allah. Saya minta agar Dia menolong saya menunjukkan kepada sesama, kasih yang Dia berikan kepada saya.
