- A few months back I was being overwhelmed by ads for Grotrax showing me that to fix my bare spots in my lawn all I had to do was buy their product and in a few simple steps I would have a thick lush lawn that was the envy of the neighborhood. SO I bit and bought some to try out so you don't have to. Find out if Grotracks is a stud or a dud in this video! DOES GROTRAX ACTUALLY WORK?

You need to water the ground first to make it damp not wet, til and then you need to unroll and only again dampen. It looked soaked and torn which on their commercial they literally tell you not to do and then the rain didnt help the situation. It was more a video of how not to use their product.
It worked for me! About 6-7 days later you could see some results. I did clean the areas were I was placing it before I placed it.
I really prepared first, added some nice soil. Worked perfect. Like painting, prep is everything. Thanks for the video.
I just used this product recently, you are supposed to till the area, then rake, remove stones and any weeds. Then lay the product down and water it. For the next two weeks ( depending on your weather) continue to water the areas every day to ensure germination and roots form strong. It worked well for me but then again I installed correctly!

I did my whole lawn front and back and it worked great. I followed the directions, tilled and added dirt, wet it down, rolled it out and then kept it watered. I used the Bermuda/rye mix and it worked beautifully.

I don't usually comment but I didn't see that you prepped the lawn/ patches as they instructed. My Grotrax grass is growing beautifully ! I did not prep some patches and the grass is not growing but where I prepped and rolled looks great. Wish I could attach a photo.
I’ve tried tons of different seed variants with limited success. Got a “big roll” of the grotrax on sale for $20. It’s been awesome and fixed my patchy areas. Looks weird for a couple weeks but seeded really well. Prep and watering consistently is important
I laid this down a little over a week ago and its working so far. I'm seeing pretty good germination. Though I did put down some lawn soil to help it retain moisture a little better.
I don't think you prepared the areas correctly. You have to make sure the areas are tilled dirt and moistened.
I don't see buying a convenience product if you have to do all that work! Just use regular seed.
@@grannygoes7882the point is the seed won't be blown all over from the wind. Every seed is perfectly placed and stays in place.
@@staceys2711 Ok I live in Wyoming where it's pretty windy but never had a problem with replanting dog spots with seed. I did try this and it didn't work for me at all. I it never dissolved even though we've had tons of rain. I ended up literally scraping it off the dirt and putting seed down. Grass seed doesn't have to be perfectly placed, you can handcast willy nillly and grow grass.
It says to water 2or3 times a day !!!! Must keep it wet ….. it’s all in the details ……
No because it says you can grow this on top of concrete. So it’s the product! And come on , not even one blade of grass??

He didn't follow the directions. You can't just lay it on the grass and water. You have to till the area and remove all grass and weeds. We used it and even when the heavy rains washed away some of it we have grass growing in under 2 weeks.
Was redoing my backyard and wanted to put grass in and thought I'd give this product a try. Removed everything that was existing, placed a couple yards of fill dirt, then topped it off with top soil before rolling out the Grotrax. After about a week it started to sprout (in the one area that gets the least amount of sun). A month later and there are a couple patches that have taken off, but overall it is definitely not a lawn and almost no further sprouting. Watered twice a day everyday and most of the area should be getting plenty of sunlight. Can't say that I'd recommend this product.
The manufacturer states you have to clear off the ground to the dirt, till it up, wet it a day before, not just lay it over the top of existing lawn.
Update: I laid down 4 - 25 ft rolls it all came up very well.
So do they tiler the concrete block they show that it grew on? Fake news
lol If you have to clear it, till it and wet it a day before putting it down, it's not convenient at all. So it's still a scam. If I have to do all that AND pay more for the product, I'll just buy a bag of grass seed that will cover more area than their gimmicky roll.
Exactly. I prepped ground as instructed and after nine days I see the sprigs of grass growing. I'm excited so far it's coming along be well. The temperature dropped below 40F ( they did state it couldn't get below 40F) I covered it all with grass barrier material in the evening and took it off each morning when it got back warmer.
@@brentd you don't have to exactly till the soil but loosen it up. I did it by hand with a garden hoe (It was able to do it quickly as I previously had plants in that area) then rolled out the four rolls of grotrax.
My results were good, Im satisfied.
I did purchase too last week without see this video. I 😢 angry now because I did order 3 rolls 😂. Thanks for your video. If my came out I will let you know.
I had a 13 year old English Bulldog (RIP Boozer) he would only walk just off the concrete off my backporch and pee in the same area for about two years before he passed. Killed all the grass. I put the grotrax down and it worked great. I think the trick is you have to water the $h!t out of it. It worked great for the small area he ruined, roughly a 4 x 10 area. I saturated the area daily and I blocked the area off, so no one walked on it.

Has anyone tried this product but actually prepared the lawn the right way. Like read the instructions first?? In order to do a proper and accurate review you need to follow the products directions. If then the product still is or isn’t working then review it.

Looks like the area wasn't properly prepared. Gotta get it to bare soil and raked with stones removed, plus: the website says it takes longer for Bermuda grass.

Curious if you cleared/prepared the dead spots like it says to do in their install video. Didn’t look like it but couldn’t really get a good look. They say it won’t work if you just lay it over dead grass.
I did in some spots and also in a few others left it with the dead patches. And the results were the same. I was surprised that even the ones in the bare dirt areas had little to no germination.

All the people here saying that you have to prepare the soil first, in the ad the put this on a cement block and it grows on it.
Exactly. I put it on bare ground and watered as directed and got next to no growth.

I bought a 100 square foot roll from Amazon for $40 before I found your video. It sort of worked for me, about 70% of the area are now covered with grass. One difference between yours and mine, is that I placed the Grotrax sheet on an empty space ( after a big tree was removed ), you placed yours on known bad area where grass had difficulties growing. May be the problem is not GroTrax. Whatever caused the grass to not grow there before is preventing GroTrax from growing properly. I am no expert. What the hell do I know.
Till this day I stil have not figured out which side is up. I guess it does ot matter since as you add water the paper breaks up quickly. 👍
The area needs to be properly prepped. No dead grass underneath. The sheet needs to come in contact with the soil. That's what he did wrong.
Thanks for the detailed video. I'm curious if you or anyone else has thought of using this more as a seed blanket on top of grass seed to help improve the germination rather than actually fully rely on this to germinate well?
They sell seed blankets. We're in a new-build so I'm trying to figure out options. We've got a fairly large yard. Its my understanding that you throw down your seed then use the seed blanket to secure it. They even come with biodegradable spikes.
That would be an awfully expensive seed blanket.
You don't need to use this as an extra seed blanket. The roll by itself works just fine. This guy just couldn't be bothered to follow the directions and didn't use it right. You have to till the soil first, clear rocks and any debris, and wet until damp. Then you put the roll down, put a few rocks on the corners to keep it in place, then wet grotrax until damp as well. I did and it worked really good. This guy just lays it down, soaks it(which it tells you not to do) and calls it a day. Since this dude didn't even do it right, his video is misleading by telling everyone it doesn't work. It's like well yeah, no sh*t dude. No wonder it didn't work.
It has worked for me. My only problem is squirrels running across it.
oh no. I bought the flower bed version from them. Now I am worried I could have just bought 30 dollars worth of starts. Oh well, I am going to try it out anyway.
Unless you break up the soil underneath the seed will not be able to germinate and root as ground it too hard, maybe put too soil down first and give roots a chance to bed in

User error… dig up and prep the surface down to the dirt and heavy watering for the first 2 weeks. It doesn’t even state/show if you watered it regularly or not

because like everyone else - he is realizing that cool season grass is actually easy and when you move to Florida and have to deal with alpha grass, it's a whole new learning curve. Either way though, most of this video was filmed in the dead of winter which doesn't help. 😁
AL definitely hit the nail on the head. Also I've been dealing with killing out grass types I don't want in my lawn as well. It's come a long way from what it was when we moved in. It's honestly really easy to kill off a cool season lawn and reseed it and have a great lawn in like 2 months tops. Here without sodding it's not that easy.
@@Brettsgrasscapades Mostly just flipping you crap. We all sometimes have parts of our yard that aren’t “Instagram worthy.” A year ago I had some rough patches between some disease damage and areas I had to hit with glyphosate because of a gnarly poa trivialis infestation that wasn’t being fixed by the whole “dig it out” method. I went from dominating the whole neighborhood to having a pretty torn up looking lawn for a while.
Keep us updated on how the Bermuda progresses over the summer. I’d be interested to see a video showing the progress of it filling in.
The Johnathan Green version worked fairly well.

Thank you! Saw the ad, immediately went to CZcams looking for real reviews. Sure enough, I ain't buying this.
The problem isn't the product. It's that he didn't use it right. The directions say to till the area, remove rocks, leaves and any debris. Then wet area until damp. He did none of these things and just ploped the roll down on the lawn. I prepped the area like the directions said and it worked great. The few small patches I covered without tilling first did not grow.
His video is not a real review and it's misleading since he didn't even use it correctly. I bought a roll at home Depot for $25 and I'm glad I didn't watch this video first since if I had I wouldn't have purchased it. Idk it was a pretty inexpensive and easy way to grow back areas of my backyard. I just wouldn't make your decision based off listening to this guy.
It didn't work for me either and it was way more work. The complete directions says to get rid of all the dead grass and then til the grown and add soil. Jeez.....just plant seed if you are going to do all tha work! I always have a dog spot where my dogs do their business all winter. Last year I bought "dog spot" grass seed in a plastic container. I literally just poured it out of the container without preparing the soil at all. It worked fast. I'll never buy Grotrax again but next summer, I'm just going to till up that area and plant regular grass seed. The spot seed you buy dies back every year.

Whatever caused the bare spots to begin with should be addressed first. Lack of water, poor soil, soil too acidic or alkaline etc

The Bermuda will fill in on its own this season with the assist of a good nitrogen fertilizer, plenty of water and heat. You won’t even know those bare spots were there when it’s all said and done
Also adding sand over those bare areas will attract heat and sunlight allowing the Bermuda to potentially spread even faster and repair itself

I am not sure any of that stuff works. But I always thought a cool idea is an easy at home hydroseed DIY kit. I know they have it at Ace Hardware, but it has seed already mixed in. A mix where you add your desired seed would be awesome!

You did it wrong, you suppose to clean out dead grass and grate area then lay down roll and if you have bad/infected soil nothing will grow in the spot unless new soil put in place, have your soil tested with a soil testing kit

Your cutting your grass to short. That's what I can see, and it's going to get hotter outside.
This grass is bermuda grass it loves being cut short. Its the same grass they use on golf courses.
Grotrax does work if it's applied correctly

First off I'm not associated with grow trax by any means but really your putting something that requires nutrients on top of dead grass ,really one would thought hey maybe I should have some topsoil under their as in grab a shovel and remove the dead grass that's their this ain't no dam rocket ship toto just being lazy hey I know let's put some over the cars too then do a review common sence
Yes I was reading the instructions and you have to put it on bare soil. No dead grass, no vegetation. You can’t really just roll it out. And it also said to keep it wet. That’s the key. Maybe the results would have been different 🤔

They show it growing on a brick in their marketing materials. I installed it on bare dirt that any quality seed would have germinated on.
@@Brettsgrasscapades I have some in my backyard now, I used about 150 feet. I followed the instructions, removed all the weeds, tilled the soil, removed rocks, watered it twice daily. Sounds like you had a case of user error, I've heard of it happening to my friends before.
