We've regressed.
Yes! But at least it is cleaner.
How I the hell can you sell that we is regressed no more technology is a great thing and building great infrastructure that's what makes a country girl simple and you could easily grow your own food you could easily do all of that that was better but is it better really when you have racism killing off black people really that was not a great time for for black people
Hauntingly beautiful. Incredibly, many of the buildings featured are still standing and recognizable more than a century later. Thanks!
I was mesmerized with this video
Beautiful architecture....music captures the fell of the atmosphere....love this video

the Romans would like a word..
Wow, a truck with Kaufmann's on the back. 😁😁
HELLO TO ALL MY NEIGHBORS THAT SEE THIS AND LIVE IN Pittsburgh ! 🍺😎❤️
I love driving past some of these buildings that are still standing. Proud to be from the Burgh.
My Pap was born in Lawrenceville in 1919, and the photos and videos are precious. Such a different world, and hauntingly before the 1918 influenza pandemic began... with Pgh being the second hardest hit city in the US. Many thanks for sharing.
I have a house in Squirrel Hill, which is about a block away from CMU where some of these shots were taken. It's amazing how much hasn't changed.
I know I don't think im biased saying we have one of the most beautiful city's in the country
...and how much has changed.
I was lucky enough to spend July 1987 in Pittsburgh We stayed in CMU and worked on the Gateway Clipper Fleet I’ll never forget the generosity and friendliness of the people and how great Pittsburgh was It felt like home Kindest Regards from Scotland
@@brittanyeyrich2360there’s a lot of beautiful cities in the U.S., but PGH combines the beauty, with a population of people that aren’t assholes. Major sense of community around here.
Shoutout to Station Square, the P & LE railroad building and the Smithfield street bridge, which all seem to have changed very little since then. Used to walk across that bridge every day going back and forth to work
I worked for The P&LERR in that seven story Terminal Building. The only thing I see different with the P&LERR buildings is the train shed is gone. That Terminal Building was the first Air Conditioned building in Pittsburgh (1900). The installation was supervised by Mr W H Carrier. Smithfield Street Bridge designed and construction supervision by John Roebling's son.
I grew up here in Pittsburgh and took those inclines all the time, it's amazing to see this! My house was 5 years old when this video was shot.
I'm from Pittsburgh wow look at that air quality.
That smokey air looks like Dollar Signs to me.
@@gieb6428 Looks like COPD and Lung cancer to me! 🤔🤔🤔
And early death, unfortunately. 😕@@gieb6428
Those shots of the streets downtown…it looks exactly the same. That’s one reason I love us, we know how to build it to make it last. And we know that you don’t break what don’t need fixing. Throw a rock in PGH and you’re gonna hit a National Historic Landmark. I am very proud of what we have created here, and to be from people who did it.
This warmed my heart. I felt as if I was looking thru the eyes of my Granda who was born there 1916💜
My Irish Great Grandfather was driving one of those Railway Street cars
It still looks like home.
this is almost like jumping into the DeLoren and heading back in time, thank you for sharing.
Live and love today, friends. Soon, we will all again return to the Earth, just as these people.
Pittsburgh section ends about 5:14.
I noticed the shift right away. 👍🏻
I was born in the 'Burgh in 1947, and a lot of what appears in this video was unchanged as of the 1950s. I recall a tradesman who came around Oakland streets in the late 1950s on a horse-drawn wagon with a set of grinding wheels - he'd sharpen your scissors and knives for a few pennies. There were also produce vendors traveling around the neighborhoods in horsedrawn wagons. My parents met at Schenley High School (@ 3:50).
You did a good job of colorizing these films - faded pastels that resemble actual aged color film. Thank you!
Thank you, greatly appreciated. My sister lives in Pittsburgh she loves it there.
didnt expect to see footage of the incline there, the right side is no longer there except for the foundations, with 3 big blocks in the right spot to sit down and look at the city, pretty popular smoke spot
The history of Pittsburgh is amazing, especially if your an Industry guy like me.
I think I saw Sidney Crosby crossing the street.
Yep good catch. HE was with PEGGY FINNEGAN
Oh wow. Pittsburgh born, raised and soon to retire. Thanks for this!!
Thank you for this wonderful video! My husband and were able to recognize many sites - but many were very unfamiliar. 100 years can change so much.
I was the guy standing by the boat. I remember it like it was yesterday.
Yes, this is a haunting video because most of the buildings are still there.
Traveling back in time. Excellent
This is amazing.
This track is a straight banger 🎶
Undercover Vampire Policeman by Chris Zabriskie
Looks very Europe-like.
Great video. I'm italian, but this is really amazing. Those horses down the streets...
I had family alive in Pittsburgh at this time I wonder if my great great grandpappy was in this video somewhere.
I lived in Pittsburgh for a few years and worked just down the street from several of those buildings! I think my house was about 7 years old when this was shot.
This video is incredible. I think the videos on our channel will be the modern version of this 100+ years from now.
If you weren't walking around in a suit holding a briefcase, what were you even doing with your life
Mesmerising! Thanks for this. I'll be back for more.
Nice bonus at the end seeing the thousand islands area. Not sure if that was the Boldt castle show there but if it was the timing was interesting because George Boldt died in 1916 and the property was more or less abandoned after his death . Thankfully it has been restored now and well worth a visit for a walk back in time.
Pittsburgh, the city where my grandfather lived and worked in the steel mill.
This song at 1.25 sounds very much like "perfect day" by Lou Reed.
It's one Ambient track. "Undercover Vampire Policeman" by Chris Zabriskie. I Love Lou Reed though.
Yup, heard it too.

This is so amazing
Great soundtrack
Awesome, thanks!
Love Pittsburgh, glad I missed most of that mill days, city was so polluted then...
wonderful
I'm only 16 and I live in Lawrence county crazy to think that thid was 90 years before I even existed or my dad (born in 66) or my grandma (born in 42) and a year before my great Grandma. Yes my dad and me are the only two still around but those streets of Pittsburgh definitely look extremely similar yes there's a few skyscrapers now but other than that not really much else.
LOL You forget how old the inclines are. :)
I love Pittsburgh i was born here. Currently looking for someone with a pretty good knowledge of old Pittsburgh anything pre this video! Thanks
Look Smokey like it’s supposed to
Thank you.
my dad took me on all of those..car and all!
Some additional info: The incline pictured is the Monongahela, the section that carried horses and cars was removed in 1935. However, in the 1950s, there were two other inclines in operation that are now gone. One was a little further east of the Monongahela serving Mt Washington near Bailey Ave at the top station. The other was by the junctio of Mt Oliver and Arlington neighborhoods with the lower station in South Side. Both were able to carry cars. I grew up blocks from the Duquesne incline and rode it hundreds of times. Had the pleasure of having ridden all four inclines back in the day.
Many of these buildings are still in PGH.
The year my great grandfather was born (in Homewood I’m pretty sure). Pittsburgh was one of the 10 largest cities in the US in the early 20th century.
i was born and raised in Pgh, lived there until recently. This is amazing and a great look at the city from way back when. Pittsburgh was also a city torn during WW1 as there were a lot of German immigrants and at least one German Language newspaper...
Sehr gut! 🇩🇪🇺🇲
And during WWII as well!
is that the Pennsylvanian hotel at 1 minute
The original boring tunnel
hello, wondering what they copyright is on this? Is this public domain?
Nice video, now all you need is Rick Sebak to do some narration.
Before the tribe completely ruled.
Still the good old days of the robber barons. It was a Freemason town early on, you can see how big their clubhouse is. At least Carnegie funded some public libraries.
What tribe are you talking about
he is anti-semitic@@ClueSign
Different World
glad we dont live in smog anymore like seen in this footage
Crazy
No construction pics?? So wierd to believe such his story
Some shots show no trees or very small trees, like they just built the buildings
rip
Is all of that footage public domain?
Yes, from the U.S National Archives.
Islands of the St Lawrence ?
the St. Lawrence River between Ontario, Canada and Jefferson and St. Lawrence Counties, New York, lie more than 1,700 islands known as the Thousand Islands.” Was additional footage on the same reel, filmed by the Ford motor company. from the US National Archives.
smoke!!!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
any way that you can redo things and leave the names up long enough that you can read them
Sure. They only flash on the original reel, something to do with the native speed. I've slowed this down quite a bit, but I've removed most of the captions. But I'll definitely give it a whirl. I'm going to remaster a-lot of the older videos we've done. I'll freeze frame some captions in the remaster.
You could always pause the video.
I see...dead people 😨
Way to make it impossible to read what these are
Went i hear people talk about how good the time was back in 1800 and 1900 i say do you remember slavery my people do and it not about slavery and yes you didn't need gas all that you have to do is get a horse and a carriage that was on your way again around town that was a good thing but everything improves everything gets better we just had to learn how to live with inside of the other technology world and those times could not have lasted
Pittsburgh is in a Northern state that never had such, slavery was relevant in the early 1900's and the population numbers then was vastly different, not saying it was a great time then either to be other? But also glad times have changed here
@michaeldesivio221 I totally agree. We have regressed. As long as Satan is prince of this world. We sadly won't see true long lasting peace until the earth is destroyed following the new earth and Heaven.
You edited out the descriptions of the scenes! Without those these are just clips of nothing! No meaning what so ever!
Very poorly done. 7.34 minutes of scenery that one has no idea what they're looking at.
unless you're from Pittsburgh.
Better ask for your money back.
I know what I'm looking at, I lived it.
My family came from germany 10 years prior and settled in southside
