    If some people think that these baroque opera performances are extravagant, I tell them that that is nothing compared to Handel's time. In Rinaldo, he used all kinds of scenic resources, special effects that simulated thunder and lightning, fireworks, statues, even water machines. This is known since the British writer, critic and politician of that time, Joseph Addison, said that Rinaldo was an extravagant opera, very new for people in London (that's why it was so successful) and described everything that I am saying.

      Yes I heard they were more like a 'party night' with entertainment, food, drink and friends - more like a nightclub. We need more of that idea - less of the stuffiness. Most people sit there like a corpse - unmoved - like not a single note in the music has touched them! Many are way too serious and precious and a tad pretentious.

Spettacolo bellissimo e appassionante.

    A masterpiece. Great orchestration, masterful counterpoint, vocal pyrotechnics, drama, lyricism, exquisite arias that I love, "lascia ch'io pianga", "venti turbini", "furie terribili", "or la tromba", "cara sposa", beautiful duets , brilliant orchestral scenes like the "battaglia". Rinaldo represents the entire peak of the baroque essence. Handel was the best composer of operas and oratorios of the Baroque, without a doubt.

    STUNNING! What a GORGEOUS and luscious production! I absolutely love them as marble statues, Bernini or Michelangelo, I can't tell. LOL And I also love that it is the 1731 version of "Rinaldo"--with the tenor Goffredo and the role of Almirena expanded for la Strada, I believe--which is not often staged, let alone recorded. While this is a regional production in Italy, the standards are so high, and perhaps this is the more "correct" in terms of the size of the theatre.

    My 2nd exposure to Handel . . . (beyond "Messiah"). Here in the Americas, if you're not looking for Handel -- you won't find Handel other than Christmas "Messiah" and Easter complete "Messiah". I really like. So much interplay from pit up to the stage. Obviously requires concentration and caring for the art form (which is pretty darn nice).

    The emperor of Austria, told Mozart: "no ballet in my opera." In the case of this Handel opera the quotation should be: "no statutes or mannequin/ dolls in my opera." It's supposed to be about the crusades and the seize of Jerusalem. A few live action scenes with jousting lances and swords would be appreciated.

    What a delight - but I struggled to watch such a visual treat in this inspiring but rather too pixilated stream. I didn't have much hope, but Naxos produced a DVD of this production in 2021, and it is available to buy on Amazon, so that's what I have gone for to get better sound and visuals. But just how clever this direction and design is - those Christian 'paragons' elevated on their mobile plinths. It's just the kind of subversive touch that the subject matter - Crusades, essentially - requires. Thanks for posting!

      For me, the best composer of the Baroque was Händel, not Bach. I love his operas, senenatas, dramatic oratorios and concerti grossi. Very dramatic and cosmopolitan style. Bach did not compose any opera, he was a religious fanatic of the church and he has nothing in common with Händel. In this context, Bach's name is totally irrelevant.

    • @Musica-xo3uv
      @Musica-xo3uv Před 2 lety +2

      @@shadbolt4687 Exactly, the name of Bach here has no relevance. What does a dramatic theater composer have in common with a religious church fanatic? Nothing. Handel's operas and oratorios have been a discovery for me. They are masterpieces, the highest of the Baroque.

    L'allestimento è abbastanza "barocco" e per fortuna non è quelle cose strane ambientate sulla luna o nel perido nazzista (W Pizzi). L'azione è ridotta al minimo, peccato. I cantati sono costretti a fare il minimo indispensabile quando il teatro Haendeliano richiede maggiore movimento in scena.
    La direzione è troppo accelerata... non è una direzione è una corsa e questo direttore deve ringraziare che ha a disposizione voci immense e che cantano il repertorio barocco da anni.
    La versione putroppo non è quella del 1711 ma una versione che Haendel ha scritto (la trerza se non ricordo male) anche perché alcuni ruoli come quello di Eustazio sono eliminati e altri hanno cambiato la tessitura.
