Thank you very much for this helpful video. Sadly our church has shortage of altar servers especially in the summer months. I am a middle-age female and I volunteered to be trained train with a few young ones so that I can help cover the needs. Some of our practice are a little different and we run on only 2 altar servers and a cross- bearer each mass. The duties are similar, minus the paten, which we do not use anymore. I learned many things, including the proper names and terminiologies for roles and duties as well as the vessels and appropriate gestures you emphasized.
I subscribed to your link and I look forward to learning more as I try to expand ways to volunteer in the church. God bless you!

I've been a altar server for a number of years and I've done it many times in West Hartford CT. And as of this year, I'm taking my altar serving business to another Catholic church in Newington CT. Church of the Holy Spirit.

Great, but you forgot one detail: ask them to please wash their hands before handling the sacred items they have charge of for the length of their particular Mass. You should also mention appropriate clothing and being tidy in their appearance. God bless.

We mention these things during their "live" training. This video is meant to be more or less a reminder for the training they already received regarding the Mass itself.

I sincerely wish this was the practice at the parish I live in. The altar servers are rarely instructed. The running joke is "There are 3 rules for all altar servers: 1. smile, 2. don't trip, and 3. make Father m___ look good." It is mentioned every time a new server is introduced by the Pastor at Mass as a new server. Then every is expected to applaud and laugh at the joke. During Mass is when they get told, half the time, what to do next. I actually toyed with the idea of passing along your marvelous instructions to some in the parish, but thought better of it. Repercussions would ensue. Sad, but true. We are in a state of dominance by those who have other notions of what is best for everyone. God bless you and please keep up the good work.

If you change your mind please feel free to share this video. As the primary liturgical authority at the parish, the primary sharing should be with the pastor, or at least with those who train the servers. Our video has gotten some attention from other parishes who wish to use it as a guide. Our servers are very well trained. When new altar servers are trained, they are trained by the older and more responsible servers, under the supervision of the priest you see in the video (Fr. John Luong, OMV). To bring up the need for altar server training (and the need to remind servers of the correct thing to do, which we do all the time, so ongoing training) is very important. It adds a great deal to the Mass and also helps the altar servers themselves to grow in the spiritual life.

Actually I find just watching stuff like this consoling. It tells me there are men working to restore all things in Christ somewhere in my country and eventually it will make its way to my parish. The current Pastor where I'm at will not tolerate criticism or correction of any sort. Sharing this video would ostracize me. I conduct a Divine Mercy Chaplet prayer group that assembles on Thursdays when we have Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and of course, the Pastor is included in the intentions. If I were to send him this video, the Divine Mercy prayer group would be threatened, if not shut down. It would have consequences and not positive ones at this point. So...........................Jesus, I trust in You. We get to live our faith in a dark place waiting. Thank you for all you do for God and His Church. It consoles those of us who wait in the darkness of error and heresy to see the shining lamp of discipline in places where you are. God bless and Mary keep.
