Route 66 Road Trip Stops in California
Vložit
- čas přidán 7. 08. 2024
- Route 66 road trips typically end at the Santa Monica Pier. We started our journey from there and drove over 14 days to Chicago, Illinois. This video is part of a series I am making on all of the states on Route 66 and what they looked like during June of 2019. California is one of the most barren and has lost a lot of Route 66 charm but there are still some fun spots if you know where to look. You can see our favorites in the video and you can see videos on the rest of the states when they are posted on my other channel below.

Originally from Arkansas , my mom and dad drove Route 66 every year. Going to California. This was in the early 50's. We had a package of bologna, a loaf of white bread, a fried chicken, A thermos full of hot coffee. It took several days to arrive . If I remember correctly almost 3 days and that was driving all night the first night. My dad would drive mostly through the night before turning the wheel over to my mother for a while. Early evening on the second day. We got to eat in a café and we usually stayed the night at a place called the "Blue Swallow" motel . Sorry to be so longwinded, just so many stories and memories are for me on " Route 66". Thank your for your video.
sandra brown what a great memory 💕 I’m glad you shared :)
sandra brown Fabulous 👏👏
Thanks so much for sharing your memories with us, I am glad you got to spend some time on the route as well. We stopped by the Blue Swallow Motel in the New Mexico video I am posting next week. It is a beautiful spot but we didn't get to stay there.
My Grandpa and his Second Wife were the ones who saved the Goffs Schoolhouse at Goffs California from ruin. They lived in it until her health got worse and sold it to the foundation and moved to Southern Arizona.
He hand dug the water lines to being water from the railway to the property.
Love seeing the property cared for and enjoyed by many!
Loving the father-son experience- you're a lucky man to have a Dad like yours!
The quality of your videos is getting to be so good it is indistinguishable from a TV program with a crew and a budget!
Really appreciate the kind words. It is just me and my camera!
I really love this This video I really did seeing a father-son spending time together laughing and just enjoying each other's company! Magnificent!!!
Thanks for the comment. It was a great time with my dad and I am so glad we got to do it!
Hello from Barcelona Spain, thank you very much for these videos, we have spent 20 days on vacation in California, Nevada and Arizona and your explanations have been our best help to see this spectacular and wonderful country, thank you very much, we will return.
Hello, Barcelona is one of my favorite cities in the whole world, such a beautiful place! I am glad the videos helped you to enjoy this area as well!
We are on a tight schedule but made time for the soda pop shop. Quick n fun. Bought everything I wanted for $20. Woot Woot!
Very cool that you took this trip with your dad. I would love this trek.
Yea, it was a special road trip for sure!
I guarantee you this trip will someday be more valuable to you in memories than all the riches you acquire! Great video.
I was born in Santa Monica. Climbed Amboy Crater in the 60s when we went rock hunting out there. This is going to be a great series!
Route 66 is a bucket list item for myself and my husband - these videos are a great preview. Thanks so much!!
We have a feeling...This is going to be a great series!
Thanks for the comment. I spent a lot of time on the editing so I hope you enjoy it!
Wohoo!! I lived in Monrovia for about 4 yrs and love that whole area!

Re: the gas station bell. Thanks for reminding me that I'm old. 😃
I'm just starting your Mother Road series.
I've been a subscriber for a while, and love your content.
Enjoy your day!
Just getting ready to make my way from the California/Arizona border up RT 66 east. Love your series! By watching it, I have made a list of things to definitely stop and see. Can't wait to get started. Thank you!!
Nicely done! Appreciate you including places not usually included in Route 66 videos... like the Magic Lamp, the Sycamore Inn, and the Richfield station in Rancho Cucamonga.
Look forward to your other videos!
These are great videos! Ever since I was a little kid, I've always been fascinated with "small town America", and over the past year or so, I've been actively contemplating taking a month or so, and just driving Route 66 and seeing what the "real" America is like.
Awesome! Thanks for this vlog.
What a beautiful journey. Thank you for sharing your world with us. : )
I saw the thumb nail and I’m like ahhh... Cozy Cone!
I can’t believe you stopped by the highland theater in highland park! That’s so cool! Definitely doing this trip one day
It's a pretty special trip for sure!
$4 tickets on Tuesday and Wednesday lol
Nocturnal nice thanks!
Unfortunately they recently closed it down 😢
I’ve already told you I’m a big fan of your videos; not only because they are visually stunning, but of all the useful information you share. And this is not the exception! Love it! Side note: your dad should do voice overs for car commercials 😁 that voice!!
I really appreciate you watching the videos and leaving a comment. Glad you enjoyed it! My dad will be excited to know that you think he should voiceover car commercials!
Have watched your videos for a couple of years and have found every one of them to be useful, entertaining, and all around awesome. I am planning a trip to drive the AZ and CA portions of Route 66 (and also visit Joshua Tree if time permits) and your videos have helped me SO much with that planning. Thanks so much for sharing your adventures, Josh...I subscribe to quite a few travel channels but yours is by far my favorite. Keep up the great work!!
Always liked your videos but this is another level you just raised the bar 👏 your dad looks a cool dude too 👍
Hey thanks, I really appreciate that! I spent a ton of time editing this video series haha so I am glad it is being enjoyed finally!
Very good video. I like the father/son thing you do. Getting ready to do this in Early January.
Love that I literally live in route 66, passing by all these historic figures I honestly never knew were part of Route 66 (San Bernardino County)
I just stumbled across your channel and am really enjoying this series; while I was in the Army, I was stationed at Ft. Huachuca, and grew to love the desert southwest. Thank you for sharing! Cheers!
Very nice work! Thank you!

The pastrami with the peppers looks amazing!
Excellent video! I planned a trip on the R66 and the places you show, all of them are in my planning. Regards from Rio de Janeiro !
So awesome, thanks for stopping by and watching the video!
Bottle tree ranch !! Awesome! Funny. Alot closed....you’ll just have to go AGAIN!
Very cool video! I did Route 66 from Oatman, Arizona to Williams, Arizona this past summer. I did a video for this portion and had a lot of fun putting together "Get Your Kicks on Route 66". After seeing your video, I am ready to extend my Route 66 experience into California. Look forward to your other videos on this tour of Route 66. Thank you for sharing. Regards, Happy Pheet Photography Randy Wiley
Thanks for the comment, it looks like you had a good trip along the route as well. That part is easily on of my favorite portions!
I am loving these old buildings and signs! Would love to shoot a bunch of them at night, especially the ones that still have functioning neon. Adding this trip to my bucket list!
Great video,thanks
It’s going to be fun traveling with you on Route 66...
Great video dude 🙂👍 i hope you and your dad enjoyed seeing the famous sites and restaurants on route 66 🙂👍 and it's cool to see these places that are still around today 😎👍 it sucks that you guys didn't go to the museum that were closed and that the road to Amboy was closed 😔😞 but overall looks like you guys had fun visiting these places and spending time with each other 👍👍
Dude, your Dad’s voice sounds so powerful!
haha, he always seems to get compliments on his voice!
Great video!
The summit inn is right at the top of the cajon pass on the city of Oak Hills. It was burned down a few years ago from some brush fires that burned all through the cajon pass. Rumor is that Elvis Presley stayed there while traveling.
Woo! Should out to monrovia! The bar at the Aztec is open, as is the cigar shop. One day that gem of a hotel will shine again.
Great trip
You must like soda alot! :) Thanks for the video!
Much better than liking beer or vodka a lot. Slam them Soda's! Just watch out for kidney stones. Great Video
Very cool. I’ve been wanting to do a route 66 trip
It was an amazing adventure for my dad and I. If you get a chance it is well worth it.
Donuuuuutttt mannn the best!!!!
Catching up on your Route 66 vids... Started our two part traverse of Route 66 with my Dad in Rancho Cucamonga at what was the Route 66 Territorial Museum. Living in California we have been on the LA basin section many times and wanted to save my limited vacation time for parts East. California Route 66 may have the most changes of any of the 8 states since 1994, but that may be because I am most familiar with it.
Happily the Sycamore Inn and Magic Lamp are still here. Stopped at Bono’s Historic Orange that was in the Fontana Walmart at the time. It is now adjacent to Bono’s Deli which I have never seen open for business, but I finally met Joe Bono one time and he showed me around. Stopped and photographed the WigWam Motel but it was during its ‘Do It in a TeePee’ phase. They were airing out the mattresses and we didn’t dare stay there then. It is amazing how many vintage motels were/are along this stretch. I agree that the section between Victorville and Barstow through Helendale is one of my favorites but the stone gas station and motel are gone now as is the Burlesque Museum (I believe has been relocated to Vegas). The Barstow Harvey House was closed at the time having sustained damage from the 1991 Landers Earthquake. Although I have never stayed there the El Rancho motel, made out of railroad ties, is one of my favorites. The Bagdad Cafe is for me the saddest spot on Route 66. In 1994 it was called the Sidewinder Cafe and you could get a great meal here. You really should watch the movie ‘Bagdad Cafe’. While it is the quirky story of a German tourist it is in English and co-stars Jack Palance and CC Pounder. It was sold to the current owners in the 90s and changed names to reflect the movie. It was featured in an iconic Roadtrip episode with Huell Howser. Now, the kitchen is all but closed and the whole place has become charitably a logbook for visitors. The only positives I can say is that I finally met the current owner and it still stands.
Back to 1994... we had reservations at the historic Old Trails Inn (originally The Palms) in Needles. It is across the street from the Needles Wagon sign. At the time it was operating as a B&B. It still stands but is now apartments. The El Garces Fred Harvey house has had restoration work done on it since then. Maybe some day it will open as some kind of business(es) like in Barstow.
Love the Grapes of Wrath bridge over the Colorado into Arizona that now carries natural gas. If you look closely below the current Interstate crossing you can see the remains of piers from a 3rd bridge.
Thanks again for your great video series and the opportunity to recount my memories of the best Roadtrip I ever took with my Dad.
Looks like a good trip. I tried to get one of those teepees in Holbrook, AZ, but their office has odd hours and I ended up someplace else! However, I took some photos.
haha yea we only got to take photos at the Holbrook one as well.
I graduated highschool in needles California. it's an awesome lil town
great video
Thank you!
I live in 831 California I've driven down to Los Angeles with my dad a few times
Love your dad in the wax lips ~ ha ha! AND you finally get a donut! YAY!!! Gees you pack in a lot ~ wondering how you dealt with the parking for all of these places. You did not make your dad sleep on the rollaway... did you? Awesome as always Josh!!
I remember my big sister taking me to that original McDonald’s in San Bernardino (showing my age). Too bad you didn’t stop at the oldest Del Taco on 1st Street in Barstow. Best food, still owned by original owners.
Hi from the UK. Ridden Route 66 on rented Harleys. The old Iron Hog Saloon in Oro Grande, between Victorville and the Bottle tree Ranch is worth a visit.
1:57 Hi Dad Bytheway :) We're leaving Santa Monica 14/6 and heading to Chicago for 4/7 then back to Ireland
I love the comradery of you and your father. I hope one day my son and I can make this trip. I love how everything you saw rather it was worth seeing or not you make positive comments about. I am wondering what reference material you used to plan this trip and what does a trip like this cost. I can't wait to see all of your video's about the mother road.
We're going this coming spring on our motorcycles. Except we're staying out of CA, had enough of the fruits and nuts when I had to live there.
omg that Mcdonald hamburger tower I remember they had one of that in Chicago in the 90s. you crawl in the back and there is a ladder in the shaft and there is one opening in those bars you can jump out

Eat at Peggy Sue's in or near Daggett. You won't regret it.
Awsome videos love the content. Just booked our flight from Georgia to Chicago for October doing Route 66. What did you and your dad use for navigation?
1992 and Grey Hound offered for $99 a ticket which while traveling for long stretches allowed opportunity to meet fellow travelers. An old fellow said if when buying if for example you stopped in Flagstaff,Arizona desiring a tour the cIty's landmarks ect... resuming the trip at your own pace .Travel along further to stop when inclined in some other curious or interesting location all having use the original ticket, Of some interest is that routing travel packages include Canada via it's various point of interest. It could be used for a full year and lot's of seniors I'm told took full advantage,as I heard tell some routed the entire U.S.border. The western ranges are still vast suggesting unaccompanied wonderment .With lengths far longer frankly horizon-to-horizon that of only the same desert flat landscape for hours on end.We stopped once and it was near Santa Rosa somewhere in the New Mexican desert night where two Native American's to board on an indian reservation (scheduled stop).Offering many opportunities that your heart desired your interest to navigate along the old Route 66
That’s SO COOL. Thanks fir the video. Which car are you guys drive?
Have you tried the strawberry donuts @ Donutman? That's THE signature donuts! and the peach ones come second.
I stopped by The Bottle Tree Ranch last month on my way to Utah, now know why it was closed :/ Rest in paradise Elmer.
One of the scenes from the movie kill bill was filmed at Emma jeans!
This video is amazing! Could you tell me what cameras you used taking these great videos? Also did you use a gimbal for your steady shots? Thanks very much.
My hometowns are in here 😍 but donut man comes before the hat in upland lol
Could have been The Hat in Glendora. 😉
@@luisoutumuro424 didn't look like it
Where is that old service station you visited after the Aztec Hotel I'd like to visit that place it looks cool if anyone has the location that would be awesome
🤩🤩🤩
Hi Josh, I have done a little of the Route 66 drive with my brother, and once the world gets back to semi normal, I was thinking of doing a little more of it. But, this time on my own, how safe would it be on your own? Thanks Jackie from Australia

Love you guys & your journey, But those were Pepperoncinis not "Hot Peppers" Dad threw on his great looking Pastrami Sammy
Wish I knew qll the stops on the way cause im planning it for after coronavirus
According to my research, the Bottle Tree Ranch is open again, the family apparently reopened some months back. But they were closed for a time & broken into a couple of times while closed. There's info on their facebook page & a link to their website as well, you'll find them on FB under: ElmersBottleTreeRanch I'm originally from the Victorville area so I know the ranch, its been around forever.
Thanks for sharing! That is sad to hear they were broken into but great to hear they are open again. It is such a special spot in the desert.
donut man is about the strawberry!
After this your should do a gold rush video in California or all the gold rush towns
Awesome video 😍! I am planning a road trip from Chicago to Dublin,CA ! Which route would you recommend?
Explore Highway US 50. It goes from Maryland to California... at one time coast to coast. But today US 50 ends in Sacramento.

What holiday is on June 14-16?
Can I ask roughly how much the trip costs? I’m saving for it and I’m not entirely sure what amount I may need.

GTA V AND DISNEY CARS IN REAL LIVE LoL
Can you list the stops?
Yea, I am working on a blog post with all the stops that I will hopefully have up in the next day or two.
Is your dad from Illinois.. just wondering?
He did live in Illinois for a little while
You guys completely ignored not only the original End sign at the pier but the origin and context of the End of the Trail sign! (You can find out about that at www.66tocali.com/ourstory ) Looks like you guys blazed through pretty quickly -- you'll find a lot more if you come to visit us at 66-to-Cali on the pier. California's section of the Mother Road is comprised of the very extremes of desert and urban development, leading both visitors and locals to miss much of authentic 66 here in California.
Mainly about food, he ignores the landscape in favour of road signs
Don't forget to gas up in Ludlow, it's a long way to the next gas station.
warning warning victorville is so boring, can be skipped bcoz it's too corney! a lot of history was there but removed i.e. the Will Rogers and Dale Evans museum. i used to walk right by it quite often during my treks through the desert.
