    I would suggest some bungee cords across the front of the shelves just in case of earthquakes.

    • @thecitysteadkitchen
      @thecitysteadkitchen  Před rokem

      Not out of the total realm of possibility but we live in an incredibly low likelihood area for earthquakes and a lot of other extreme weather. Unless you count the ice and snow 😂 our proximity to the Great Lakes keeps even things like tornadoes at least 10 miles away almost exclusively.

    Great reminder about not having to grow everything you preserve. I tend to think the same and realized this year that it was ok to supplement with things i didn't grow enough of or any of. I found a 25 lb bag of beets at a local bulk store and canned enough pickled beets for the year. Thanks for sharing!

    • @thecitysteadkitchen
      @thecitysteadkitchen  Před rokem +3

      That is a great amount of beets! So glad to hear others in the same boat with growing vs buying 🧡

    I'd want to have 1 year of rice and 1 year of beans for each person. (1 or 5 gallon mylar bags). Then expand to 2 years.

    Just looked through all your videos. Can I say, that I love that you have videos using your canned foods. That is one of the things lacking from so many canning videos. New subscriber here and thanks for taking the time to share ❤️

    Please put something so jars won't fall. So much work. Wouldn't want to lose any of it.
    Looks beautiful!!!

      @thecitysteadkitchen  Před 11 měsíci

      Probably would be a good idea. We don't live in an area that gets earthquakes, not even minor, otherwise I would. I realize that isn't the only thing that can cause things to fall, however, so I need to reevaluate this!

    Hello, I'm new to the whole canning thing. Thanks so much for sharing what you do and why. You helped me pick up some tips so as I start my process and get things put together it will defiantly help to lower the learning curve., as well as to start thinking about fall and what I'd like to have. 🤩

    You did really good! I have a dishwasher that is only used for sterilizing my jars, and I work on the principle that when the dishwasher is full, its time to can something else. It typically holds around 40 quart jars, and every time I use a jar I wash it, and put it in the dishwasher🥰

    • @thecitysteadkitchen
      @thecitysteadkitchen  Před rokem +1

      Wow I love this! We use our dishwasher regularly so it wouldn't work for us, but what a great way to store them and have a routine to fill them.

    They have good plastic shelf liner at Costco and Walmart. I have lot of wire shelving because I like them on wheels.

      I think the Costco plastic shelf liner is the BEST! I have used it on our farm, in our cabinets, in rentals, etc. It is tough and worth every penny.

    Very nice pantry and great organizing and canning practices. I have these shelves that are black and not that I use(d) them for canning since I purchased them but the way I lined the shelves was cheaply with black poster board from the Dollar store. I believe at the time I actually paid .69 cents US per board and was able to cover each shelf with 2 boards with some left over pieces that could have been used to line the shelves however were donated to a church school to be used by the children for crafts and scrapbooking projects. So $1.38 to cover a shelf. Also everytime I had someone send me something in a Medium flat rate postal box I would keep the box, and tape them open in a way that they made for great storage of coffee mugs which I at one time had an abundance of because I was buying them from thrift stores and reselling them for quite the profit I might add.
    Still have these shelves and though still not canning I use them for my plants and love that I can adjust them or add 2 together or other shelves from other units and maximize the storage in one shelf to take up less of a footprint. I am a huge fan of any type of canning jars. I have Ball, Kerr, and Atlas with some that are blue glass with the most unusual type of glass lids and some that have these unusual and quite old looking metal lids and I am told they are from 1908.
    I even have a large framed picture on my wall of some beautiful dried flowers and herbs in a Ball jar that hangs in my dining room and a Ball canning jar with dried flowers inside of it with a lamp light thing on the top that I believe someone themselves handmade into a lamp. I love anything to do with canning jars.
    I would like to can my own foods, I do ferments but they don't last long as I mainly only eat my veggies fermented for digestion purposes.
    You made me hungry so I subbed and rang the bell. 🥫♥

    I have a big box of bad Kerr jars - misshapen, dented, air bubbles, etc. And, I have had several blow. I keep them to show others of quality issues and what to look for. I have not had a Ball jar blow or have these types of defects. I also have hundreds of those antique jars and love them. Mama's Jars are my absolute favorite and remind me of my lovely mother-in-law who gave them to me.

    Just remember mice are attracted to cardboard. I'd suggest a plastic tote with lid anywhere there is any cardboard, including the ones used to carry jars. They will find it and move in eventually.

      I got the FDA NSF indoor/outdoor shelves at Home Depot. We needed those for a moist cellar and work great. I think most places have them like Walmart, Lowe's, Sam's, etc., if you don't need the NSF type.
