Billy Liar is one of the best social history films I've ever seen....I was 8 years old when this was made and is just how I remember growing up at that time...Brilliant!!!

Tom gives a fine performance in Loneliness of Long Distance Runner. Every facial expression he makes is perfect for that moment. I must add that not only is his acting in this film top- notch, but his erotic appeal is very strong. Particularly in the scenes in which his character Colin Smith is dressed in a suit and tie, Tom looks very, very handsome. Does anyone here agree?

    Lindsay Anderson directed
the play Billy Liar. Met him.
    Gave me his autograph. It
said "Good Luck! 1979.". Bless him.

I LOVE this actor. My favorite villain, Daniel Quilp. What a fabulous actor.

Two of my favourite screen performances from Tom Courtenay are 'King Rat' (in which he's stunningly unlikeable yet totally real and even sympathetic...) and 'One Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovitch' in which again he brings an odd dignity to a certain pathos. (He has a quality, in both voice and action, to display the hint of that which is not overtly portrayed...) 'Billy Liar', too, is a masterpiece. A fine actor, and, perhaps, rather undervalued today. Which is a bit of a shame. xx SF

I think he can replace the late Peter O'TOOLE as Anton Ego, if there will be any sequel project for 'Ratatouille'.
