  • In this video we will discuss five things that you can do to get your fruit trees ready for winter.
First, it is important to make sue you apply a fresh layer of mulch. No need to pull weeds or grass. Just mulch over the vegetation and let it decompose under the mulch. Mulch will also, capture, protect, and retain soil moisture from the winter precipitation.
Second, it is important to wrap your trees to prevent sunscold on the south and south west sides of your tree's trunk. When ambient temperatures drop below freezing, but the sunlight hits the dark colored bark, it will cause the bark to expand and contract, which will cause permanent damage to your fruit tree's bark.
Third, it is important to spray your trees to prevent pests like blister mites, and fungi from over wintering in your tree. Spraying will interupt the life cycle of unwanted fruit tree pests.
Fourth, it is important to water your trees. Trees should go into the winter fully hydrated with plenty of water in the soil.
Fifth, it is important to prune your fruit trees. There is no reason to leave dead, damaged, or diseased branches through the winter.
