  • How to PASS DOSE CALC in 6 easy steps (quick and easy breakdown)
I always recommend you use dimensional analysis (railroad method) to solve all of your dose calc problems. It's the best way to make sure you end up with the correct answer every time.
I've seen many nursing students try to use different formulas for different problems, but ultimately they end up getting stuck because they either use the wrong formula or the question is too complex for the formula to work.
Thankfully, once you understand dimensional analysis, you can use it every time for every dose calc problem. And as long as you set it up correctly, you'll get the correct answer.
Here's the steps to getting every dose calc problem correct:
Step 1: Figure out what the question is asking (what do you need to end up with?)
Step 2: What did the prescriber order?
Step 3: What conversions do you have or need to use?
    Step 4: Solve the problem
Step 5: Write the answer appropriately
    Step 6: Check your answer

@tiera8401, the need is just the unit to make sure you end up with that unit at the end.

I get confused if it’s asking for day vs does!

@ceeceebrownn the wording can throw you off. Keep practicing questions, the more you practice, the more you will feel confident when you are reading the questions and being sure you know what they are asking for.
