World Cup is every 4 years.
So its very hard to make a final, let alone win.
Messi has been to 5 World cups which is rare, he's gone to 2 World cup finals, even rarer.
When Messi lost in WC final in 2014 at the time felt like he missed an opportunity of a lifetime & he blew it.
Then in 2018 in QF his Argentina side were winning then lost 4-3 to a teenage Mbappe France side where Mbappe scored 2x to announce himself as global superstar.
Mbappe winning the world cup + scoring in the final as the youngest player since Pele.
Again Messi again saw his side blow another huge opportunity which looked like his last chance & the last chance while in his prime.
Messi not long after losing Copa America final retired from international after losing again in his 4th Copa America final.
He looked done with Argentina.
Then a passed his prime Messi was convinced to come back from retirement and he finally won a trophy for Argentina when won Copa America at Messi 5th attempt & likely last attempt, beating Neymar Brazil in Brazil.
Then soon after was what looks his last world cup, after finally overcoming 1 heartbreak obstacle with copa america trophy, Messi goal again was World Cup.
Nobody could have predicted this version of Messi, whose gone several levels below his peak would save his best performances for his last World Cup.
Nobody knew he still had anything left, he looked washed just in that Saudi Arabia lost which was a huge upset.
Winning a World Cup is the hardest competition and almost unfair on elite players to expect.
Its all generation dependant, you can be born in the wrong era or be from a nation who can't win.
In football outside the elite nations like Brazil, France, Germany, there's always that emerging nation out of nowhere that produce great group of elite talent at the same time having not been good for decades or the opposite being a fallen football nation.
Very few generational players get to a final unless they play for the elite nations (Brazil, Germany, France), who produce so many great players + squads.
Alot of nations have golden generations where they peak and have a short period in history when they produce talented squad, then go decades without a good squad.
Like Hungary, Poland in the past and others, lilke Croatia + Belgium in recent years.
Like Lewandowski was born in a weaker era for the Polish team.
Injuries has cost so many players of getting to a World cup.
You have to hope within your best years is a World cup + your healthy.
Some of the best have short peaks, injuries that prevent them from making it to 2 or 3 World cups.
Messi has been blessed with all-time talent, mixed with a long peak with health.

@@sutg845 Wrong Argentina until the Copa America was rather average with 3-4 actually good players in the team, 2014 Messi dragged that team to the final, in 2018 they were barely a fav to win their group, but managed QF and finally in 2022 Argentina had a truly elite team and that's why they won same with the Copa America title. Argentina has remained in top 10 nations largely due to the masses of talent they produce and send everyehere and due to Messi as before Messi won the Copa America it had been decades since their last and a WC after around 30 years. The Fifa rankings are inaccurate as it takes account many things so Argentina before the last few years since like 2000's has been average with some eilte players sprinkled around. And since 2006 the only other Argentines that were truly World Class at any point were Tevez and Di Maria.

Yeah, the World Cup is the most difficult trophy to win in Football, because you play every 4 yrs so you have less chances (for example the Champions League is every year) and because is for your COUNTRY, so you can't buy better players like clubs do, you have to play with the best you got. You should do some reaserch about it!

The mysticism for this WC in particular was goated. It was this generations star's last chance, Maradona had just passed away before seeing Messi win anything with argentina, the beef between South American countries and European was peak because of Mbappe declarations, then Messi having an astronomical performace, the matches against classic rivals like the netherlands (which Messi had little beef before because of the way NED dt treated one of argentinian legends). On top of that, Messi has always been super calm, reason why he got criticized a lot among argentinians, but in this WC he was focus on the trophy for his country, for his teammates that lost the 2014 final, 2015 final and 2016 final, and for his new teammates that were big part in his decission in comming back to the team after 2016 final loss. Finally, him and Mbappe were teammates in PSG, so the competition was real.

The world cup is only every 4 years that's why it's so hard to win. Any individual has at most 4 chances to win it in their careers. Next world cup is in 2026.
Edit: seems you know this already. My bad. Messi is a statistical anomaly unlike any in any sport. Seriously. And still, the greatness of Messi can't be understood by any statistic because if you watch game to game how he played.; He goes down to the defense to get the ball. The whole system goes through him. I don't know how I can describe it. Statistics don't count how instrumental he is to every phase of play. For example, Ronaldo can score a lot of goals. He can finish plays but the entire field plays through Messi and he still scores more goals per game while being the playmaker and the player with the most assists ever, the most dribbles ever, the most awards ever, the most titles ever, the most records ever. It's just unbelievable how such a selfless player can dominate in every statistic, all time.

I don't think Messi cried for getting the goat status, Argentina got a titles drought like since the start of the '90s, Messi had a lot of pressure being considerated the best pretty much since the start of his career, He got to 3 Copa América finals and one WC final, all four loses, so he got mad hated by a while, so get 3 cups back to back in just two years must have been quite liberating
I remember watching the WC final. I work nights & live in the states. The final was at 9 am for me 😂, I get off work at 5 am. I stayed up & watched the final, it was so intense especially when France tied it. I was so stressed I had to crack open a beer

Crazy thing is even with this docu y‘all still don‘t fully get the stakes, it‘s impossible to recreate because Messi won every club tital possible multiple times with Barcelona as well as multiple ballon D’ors (best player of the year trophy) and was already considered to be the best by lots of people and broke so many individual records.
But Messi repeatedly said himself that he would trade every individual title for a World Cup, he wanted to win a trophy so deeply with his national team Argentina especilaly the World Cup which is only held once every 4 years and where there aren‘t your familiar teammates from the club (for example Barcelona) but only people from the nation, which is also a reason why the World Cup is considered the biggest title in football bar none, the highest prestige possible. This World Cup title were a big reason for Maradonna and Pelé (two of the goats from the past) having their impact and Statuts and many people in the world say that a World Cup is needed to be considered the Greatest of all time which unfortunately neither Messi nor Ronaldo have achieved until then because it is that hard, that rare, but soo desirable.
And the crazy thing is Messi was so close to achieving his dream in 2014 with Argentinian reaching the World Cup Final, but then they lost against Germany which broke Messi and every one of his fans hearts. He also failed multiple times with his national teams in the Copa America (a intercontinental trophy between nations of America like the Europe Cup or Asia Cup just for America. It is obviously not close to a World Cup, But still of high prestige and a reward for your nation), he lost 3 cops finals to the point where in one final against Chile where he missed a penalty he began to cry and decided to quit the national team while Ronaldo just won the Europe Cup. It was a point where Messi got internationally clowned so hard, it was just sad to see the best player of all time punished for not getting any international trophy for his country (let alone the World Cup)
It was truly the lowest point, soo many fans lost their hope and even many Argentinians themselves who should have believed in their hero clowned him, insulted him…but time flew by. And how the tables have turned. Some years later the Argentinian team were on a run and won the Copa America and the after 20 years of tries, dreams to win this title the moment came. The last World Cup as documented in the video here. First a loss against Saudi Arabia, the memes „where is messi“ just for the team to take a turn and suddenly marching their way to the final where they faced France and Mbappe. Mbappe gave half of the world a shock in thsi final with his hat trick, but in this fairy tail like game, where Messi and Argentinian were pushed so hard to the limit, they finally beat France in the penalty‘s and Lionel Messi got his well deserved World Cup after soooooo much unbelievably agony, pain, sweat. The best footballer of all time has finally crowned himself as the undisputed Number 1 of the sport, finally achieving thsi dream in the most tale like way possible.
