  • After 300+ crashes on premiere, 4 render fails, here's a crash course on rhythm game terminology you can use when talkin with other rhythm gamers.
In today's video, I try and explain every essential rhythm game term you could want or need. This discounts rhythm game specific terms (terminology that only apply to one rhythm game) in favor of terms that work globally across most, if not all rhythm games.
If you're just getting into rhythm games or learning how to play rhythm games and you're confused what terms mean, hopefully this video helps you out regardless if you're getting into Taiko no Tatsujin, osu!, Sound Voltex, or even friday night funkin, I guess.

A few more extras, from a mobile rhythm game player:
    Specific to non-PC games:
Crosshands - when a chart forces your to cross your hands to hit the notes, either right over left or left over right. Arcaea loves to do this, other mobile games do this a bit, as do many arcade games like Chunithm and Maimai. SDVX has a few too.
Flicks - notes that you have to give a directional input to on top of hitting the note. Can be timed or untimed. See: lanota, cytus 2, phigros, chunithm etc.
Catches/Chains - notes you dont have to tap, as long as youre holding down the button or your finger is on the screen, you'll hit the note.
Cross-overs - when one side of a trill "crosses over" from the left to the right, making you crosshand while trilling. A bit niche.
Train - alternative name for extended trill.
    General:
2k/3k/4k/5k/6k etc. - the number of "keys" you need to play a chart, for mobile games this refers to the number of fingers you need to simultaneously use to play it. Typically maxes out at 6k/7k for mobile, and 10k for PC.
Marathon chart - a reaaaaally long chart.
Breaks - when a chart becomes completely empty of notes in the middle, while the song is still playing. Typically after a very hard stamina section or within a marathon chart. A "rest" section.
Vibro - jacks turned up to 11, typically on all the lanes at once, very fast. Causes carpal tunnel.

Another term you missed is mindblock. A mindblock is when you have the technical skill to read and play something, but something gets messed up in your mind and you strugggle to read/hit that specifoc pattern.
This can happen in any game, and is a general failure of the pattern recognition part of your brain. Mindblocks are typically but not always limited to a specific pattern within a single chart, with players often being able to play that same pattern fine in other contexts.
This often prompts players to apply modifiers that rearrange that chart to try to remove the association of the mindblock with a specific part of that song when possible.

    a few extra terms
sightread killer (literally from 初見殺し): a pattern that isn’t necessarily hard, but just difficult to sightread - for example, an extreme note speed increase with very simple notes to hit
individual difference (literally from 個人差): a chart where players of the same skill level will vary greatly in ability to play it - generally this happens when a chart focuses on a single skill rather than being balanced across them
money score and EX score: money score is (usually!) the default scoring method, and EX score is based purely on accuracy (i.e. no combo bonuses or the like); EX score may also consider an extra timing window above “perfect” that otherwise has very little impact on money score - for example, in DDR, a Marvelous is worth only 10 more points than a Perfect in terms of money score, but a Marvelous is worth 3 EX score and a Perfect is worth only 2
(money score is so named for its appearance in the original beatmania games, where it was the amount of money you received for your work DJing)

Love how Beat Saber got exactly 1 mention and 1 clip. Goes to show how weird the game is in comparison to other rhythm games lol
Some specific examples of Beat Saber names and weirdness:
    - A "lightshow" is the background of a map.
    - Beat Saber does not have timing windows. In fact, no component of the score per note is based on timing.
    - However, there is a community term known as time _dependence_ - a measure of how your score on a constant swing and constant note position/angle would vary across different points in time.
    - A "jump" is not 2 notes at once in Beat Saber. It's two notes of the same color, at different points in time, with a wide distance between them.
    - A "double" is at least 2 notes where both saber colors need to hit a note at the same time (analogous to chords/jumps in other games).
    - A "crossover" is a note being on the opposite side of where it "should" be (ex. blue note on the left side). Sometimes this is used to describe doubles where this happens to both notes.
    - A "stack" is a Beat Saber-only term where 2 notes of the same color need to be hit in the same swing. "Windows" are stacks with a gap of one note between the notes that make up the window. (Example: OST Ghost.)
    - A "reset" is any time where you need to manually un-swing before swinging again. These are often communicated with bombs ("bomb reset"), but older/worse maps use uncommunicated resets as well due to lack of understanding of parity (a overall mapping concept that's too expansive to get into here).
    - Jacks don't really exist in Beat Saber. "Inlines" use multiple notes on the same grid space, but the note directions flow. "Double directionals" (DDs) are the closest equivalent, where you need to hit the same note direction on the same saber twice in a row. DDs are often bad practice, but they do work in certain tech maps when set up to (see: OST Radioactive) or for emphasis when the song allows it (see: Pink's Spin Eternally One Saber).
    - Tech maps generally involve unorthodox swing methods. OST examples include Tempo-Katana and World Wide Web. Custom examples include Accelerate, The Other Side, and #1f1e33 Ultimate Long Version.
    - Because of Beat Saber's extremely lenient hitboxes, there is an entire class of map based on extreme abuse of them, "challenge maps." For examples, scroll through Cube Community and find something with less than 80% accuracy. They're wild.
    - There are like 4 different ways to represent long notes. Walls don't mess with sabers at all and may require player head movement. Arcs are trail things that don't impact score at all, but look cool and help with where the next note is in slower maps. Those are mainly used for really long notes. Chains have a lot of little notes in succession and can represent shorter long notes or a lot of sounds in quick succession, and "sliders" are improvised equivalents made of at least 2 notes at different but close time intervals, used before chains were actually added (and still by some mappers). Really long sliders are considered bad practice outside of challenge maps, and in general some consider sliders hard to score on.
    - Players are free to adjust note spawn offset, which can be likened to covering parts of the screen in a VSRG, but in 3D. This even became basegame a while back. However, actual note speed is set by the mapper and is constant across the map, and this speed actually directly correlates to timing windows, so changing it is not allowed (to my knowledge). It only changes mid-map in modcharts, pretty much.

Beat Saber challenge player here, really neat comment, here's some other terminology that's mostly used by challenge players (because it's typically bad practice elsewhere)
Poodles - Long chains of typically one directional notes (similar to jacks, but are usually a LOT faster, in the realm of like 30 NPS, my favorite example is BUTTOBA SUPERNOVA)
Palm-ups - A note pattern that forces you to swing with your palm facing upwards towards the ceiling (compared to the regular facing downwards you have)
Metronome - A typically only very high challenge level mapping style where it forces your hands to move like a metronome, typically shown by being 6+ Lane Maps, and having multiple notes facing the same direction on the same row (a good example is Safety)
Stamina - This term is also used in other rhythm games (such as DDR) but these are maps that typically are made in a way that tries to exhaust the player, and in higher level challenge stamina maps, is typically frowned upon to pause during play
Vibro - This term is also used in other games, but beat saber also has many subsets of vibro such as Jump Vibro, but this is typically where up & down notes are placed in extreme close proximity to each other, with no side notes & the like, typically on bottom row. with subsets like jump vibro they can have larger gaps, but these are much rarer
Some terms that aren't really challenge specific, but are also used
Over-swing - This is typically when you swing much more than the required 60° & 40° required to get full swing accuracy on notes
Full-swing - Swinging around the correct angles to get full swing accuracy, mostly used in reference to doing stuff such as full-swinging vibro maps (I hate doing this)
Under-swing - This is just the opposite of Over-swing
There's more terms here that I could include, but are just too niche to really be important, pretty general compared to other rhythm games, or were already included by you

@@litessbuit's a reference to cookiezi getting 2 scores on blue zenith both worth 727pp in like 2015. The WYSI part comes from Aireu choking a DT FC on a song and then noticing he got 727pp for his score and exclaiming "727! 727 WHEN YOU SEE IT! [...]". This moment was clipped and quickly spread, this was in 2020. At least this is according to the osu! fandom wiki. As a mania only player myself, I had to look that up because I don't pay any attention to std.
Pretty sure there's no connection to the Camellia song, unless Camellia was intentionally referencing it since he does pay attention to the rhythm gaming scene.

Thanks for putting together this resource! I sometimes get confused with terms here and there so I'm glad something like this exists.
A term I was thinking of that didn't get mentioned is "endkill" (a difficulty spike or hard pattern specifically near the end of a chart), or similarly "break/rest" (a less demanding pattern within an otherwise hard/highskill chart).

What a great video. It's tough to put terms from so many varied rhythm games.
In project diva theres a few terms i can think of.
270s and 360s. Meaning a pattern that goes around the controller with 3 notes or 4 notes in succession. More commonly used on the ds4 or hori controller. Similar to staircases.
    Spam, another word for jacks/trills.
    Multis, another word for chords.
Hold switches, which is releasing and changing hold notes out of order in order to achieve a higher score
And score attack, which is purposely missing or hitting the wrong buttons in order to maintain holds for the longest amount of time possible to achieve the highest score in rankings possible.

Tbh, starting as a Project Diva player has me using a few different terms for Chords. That, and having a specific term as well for both unique notes too depending on the games i've played.
    Doubles: Chords with 2 notes
    Triples: Chords with 3 notes
Quads: Chords with all four standard inputs (i.e. XO□🔺️ or all four directional inputs). Can be known as "slamming" as well in strumline circles (certian OSU types, FNF, etc.)
Slides: Directional notes using either the Slide Bar on the PD arcade machine, or touchpad/joysticks for the console releases of Future Tone. Can also have Chain variations, but typically function as an equivalent to Flicks.
Star Notes: the original touchpad/joystick notes for the home releases of PD. Named after the unique shape they have.
Modchart/Modcharting: The use of special coding in FNF charts to allow for new notes or gimmicks to be present in a song/level. Examples can be killnotes/deathnotes (notes that result in a game over), strumline manipulation, "target" notes (a term I coined myself, used for notes you MUST hit or suffer a penalty for missing), hurtnotes (killnotes but less severe, or with varying effects), and Health Drain (opponent can "regain ground" on their turns, much like the player), etc.

Triples/hands in the chords section can also be called "brackets" in games like pump it up.
In The Jacks section, trills can also be called drills.
Choke can also be called flag.

One that I'd say is pretty big to know is the difference between an accuracy based game and a hit based game. In OSU or Quaver you're scored based on how many perfect hits you got, while in clone hero you simply get a score for hitting every note. It makes a big difference in how the community makes charts.

Here are a couple things to note.
In general gaming terms, mods refer to external mods, which range from quality of life changes, to overhauls of the base game, to even adding Tomas the Tank Engine. So the Rythm Game term of "mods" would be closer to advanced settings in other games.
Difficulty spikes are usualy short parts, hence the spike part of the name, slim and pointy. A reverse difficulty spike (reverse spike for short) is the inverse, randomly getting easier before getting harder again. These both are made up of a difficulty jump (game gets harder suddenly) and difficulty drop (game gets easier suddenly) there is also difficulty curve, usualy used to talk about how difficulty increases throughout a game (in most games with difficulty curves, you tend to get more powerful, so it feels more linear) but in rythm games, it would refer to how much harder the high difficulty charts are compared to the low difficulty charts, so a curve where the x-axis is in order of difficulty, and the y-axis is actual difficulty.
You know. being honest, I think this idea of bringing difficulty curves into rythm games makes sense, and it would be the truest version of the curve, as the only thing that improves is your skill. And cheesing power. Speaking of which.
Cheese is the general game term for making something easier then it is supposed to be, usualy be doing it in an unintended way. And a term I made up is "lactoseintolerent part" this means a part that is extra weak to cheese, just like lactoseintolerent people. This mostly applies to bosses in games with combat, but im sure there are some easily cheesable parts in some ryhtm games.

The funny thing with me and the term “Mashing” I did know it was called “Mashing”
however I called it “Flailing around like you’re doing the rhythm game equivalent of drowning as the anime boys stare in horror” because when I first started playing Enstars Hard charts started straight mashing the damn screen-
Luckily I grew out of that habit but yeah
(I did this because they’re harder then PJSK’s charts)
Anyways I also think there should be a term for thumb-player friendly vs multi-hands required song charts for the Mobile Rhythm gamers (actually there might be but idk) because:
Enstars Special difficulty Definitely requires both your full hands (and at least they have the decency to give a “hey you might wanna put your tablet/phone on a table cause this requires three+ fingers (or multiple hands, I don’t remember)” warning before they start the song)
alongside PJSK’s JP-only difficulty I also forgor the name of,
Meanwhile all other difficulties* on both games can be cleared with your thumbs (or two fingers)
(Actually I don’t know if you can clear Expert charts in Enstars with only your thumbs I only saw recorded footage of the difficulty)

An easily misused term for rhythm games is the flow of a song which is a more universal meaning for sight reading a chart and means how easy someone could sight read the chart and how well the notes are in rhythm to the beat of the song I don’t see many people use the term let alone correctly.

Another "synonym for _chart"_ for ya! _Heaven Studio_ (rip in dmca, but they're planning a Copyright Free™ comeback) refers to them as _remixes,_ after the main-series levels where multiple rhythm games get mashed up (which is... basically exactly what you do in HS). "Charts" are still used interchangeably, but they're officially called "remixes" even if it's a single rhythm game for the entire song. Also, the series term for a Full Clear is a "Perfect" regardless of timing accuracy (though later games added a meter to show accuracy rating at the end, along with a separate "No-Miss!" judgement for an actual FC). "Go for a Perfect!" just means "FC the chart within three attempts".

As a vsrg player myself of over 20 years, I've never heard the term soflan. I'm not sure whether that says something about me, or you though. Probably me. Typically I would use the term gimmick charts, although since my main game has been osu!mania for the past decade+ I would now generally call them SV charts.
Side note: SV derives from the term Slider Velocity from osu std, because scroll speed changes were created with the same interface as slider speed changes in std, and stored in the beatmap file in the same format as well.
Anyome who calls it Scroll Velocity is wrong and does not know their history.

How about in Rhythm Heaven? It's hard to perfect time the notes.
JSAB [Just Shapes And Beats] has a rating system and when the game started and picked which 3 songs are good for you and when finished 3 or 4 or 5 songs, you get the boss song map. FNF [Friday Night Funkin] is constantly scrolling up with a bar in the middle of your opponent like e.g your opponent beats you in 90% and you're at 10%, if you reach 0, you're dead. Your opponent at 0 you're gonna win but you only beat 3 songs after you win depending on the difficulty and score. Chokes are hard like modded FNF songs like Ballistic, and hardest FNF modded chart meme songs. And did I mention Rhythm Heaven? Oh there is your menace, Rhythm Hell, it's hard, makes you struggle to time it well, time signatures are faster in difficulty, same as FNF but you have a bar that is slowing back, if you miss, you lose time, if you reach the end of the bar, you get Cooked.
I'm more like a race and tower defense guy but I like using Instruments for some time.
