It sucks being a Donkey Kong fan

- Donkey Kong is an amazing franchise, providing fans with games like DK64 and the DKC series, which have gone on to receive top tier reviews with the sales to back it up. But why is such an amazing franchise getting so little attention? Whereas Pokémon fans seem to get a new game or DLC every year, the last new Donkey Kong game was released in 2014 (not counting the Switch port). That sh*t is bananas, and it's reasons like this why it sucks being a Donkey Kong fan.
- Hry
Us Duck Hunt fans are taking it easy these days. Even if we get hyped over minor cameos, and I’m basically the only one in the community.
Your time will come!
@@pressaTD Thanks for your support! Bark, Quack, Boom forever!
You always got Pac-Man.
You are no longer alone
Imagine how we Mappy fans feel. Mappy didn't got a new game for quite a long time and even if it does, in most cases it's Japan exclusive instead of a worldwide release. It also doesn't help that Mappy is not a popular franchise among gamers despite being a great series.
I can understand the pain people go through if they're only DK fans or Metroid fans. Retrostudios can really only make a new entry in one series at a time. For me personally, I love both DK and Metroid. So no matter which series they choose to work on next, I'm happy. The way I see it, the best thing they could do is alternate between the two. Make a new Metroid Prime game, then a new DKC game, and go back and forth. That's probably the best way to please both fandoms.
I think the hardest part of being a DK fan is the uncertainty of it all. Nintendo certainly isn't shy about using DK, with the DKC theme park next year, the Lego line coming out next, and the Kongs' inclusion in the SMB movie.
But Nintendo could always relapse into their old ways at any time and for any reason. The Rare Buyout wasn't even the first or last "Dark Age of Donkey Kong".
It's also a monkey's paw sort of situation, while there's benefits to DK and sometimes Diddy or other Kong family members showing up in Mario spin-offs, there's also the downside of it that it's assimilating DK into Mario instead of allowing it to flourish as its own franchise.
Ya know what's worst then being a Donkey Kong fan? A K. Rool and the Kremlings fan
I recommend Yooka-Laylee the Impossible Lair, and Kaze the Wild Masks, their based on DKC.
I would be happy with just DK64 on the damn Nintendo Switch online! make it happen Nintendo!
I’m surprised they haven’t yet
@@pressaTDyea I'm genuinely surprised too. It's on the Wii u virtual so they can make it happen. It's literally my most anticipated game on the NSO and I would absolutely love to have it on switch. You'd THINK Nintendo would put it on there already, it's donkey Kong, it's an obvious choice tbh. But no, I guess they love to do everything with donkey Kong except games. It's sad, there's GOTTA be something coming soon and I'll take anything at this point but at the same time the brand isn't healthy atm to have a port, remake, or even a 2d platformer, of donkey Kong, we NEED something and something GOOD. Something to make this wait worth it like Pikmin 4.
@@nortjrThere was, apparently, one mini-game on the Donkey Kong 64 Wii U port that was made impossible due to the lack of Nintendo 64 hardware lag. I'd still like to see it on the Switch; it would be better than nothing
Let's not forget that this is Nintendo we're talking about. They just don't know what to do with some of their franchises, and ultimately chooses to forget them entirely. Need I remind you of F-Zero? Cuz Nintendo sure needs that reminder!
Let’s send them a letter!
I recommend Fast RMX and Redout 2, their based on F-zero.
But they somehow know how to make us fly through corneria for the 5th time even if the controls are wonky
You forgot about DK king of swing and DK Jungle climber, King of swing was experimental with their climb and artistic design, but is fun at the least, and Jungle Climber is a really great game commonly overlooked by many, it perfected the climb gameplay and added a new original story, if you haven't played it you should, and yeah right now we could only wait and see what happens in the future of DK as a franchise.
Fingers crossed we get something!
DKC-DK64 was the golden banana Era for DK anything else is alright. Need to being it back to that
That literally what Retro studios was doing 😆 Kremlings would be nice tho but Retro did really great games imo

Now that’s a game I forgot about
I'm glad someone else still have memories for Glover 64.
I personally think DK fan right now aint so bad. He was definitely the best part of the Mario Movie.
I mean it’s not so bad compared to other franchises that’s for sure, but I think we are definitely due for a new game
Getting DK and other members of his family in the SMB movie is a win, but it's also kind of a loss.
Because framing DK as a supporting Mario character strips him of his own independence and identity.
It would just be appreciated to get a Donkey Kong project that isn't tied to Mario in any way like we did in the past
Hyurgh Hyurgh Hyurgh
@@jarerarebear1765 That's quite hilarious to hear considering Donkey Kong is essentially a Mario character. Donkey Kong Arcade game is literally Mario's first game and DK is Mario's archnemesis before Bowser came along. Donkey Kong Country is basically a Mario spinoff series and the Kong characters as a whole are Mario characters despite lot of Donkey Kong fans want to deny lol
@@retrofan4963 Nah, Donkey Kong Country very much has its own identity, nothing about it feels like a "Mario spin-off" If Mario fans want to claim that, I'm under no obligation to agree. Lots of Mario fans are dumb sheep anyway.

Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze is one of my favorite games!

Being a donkey kong fan:
Stans cap hard for your favorite franchise
Only get a port and call it a day
Only get a port that sits next to another port that doesn't have platforming as good as yours
Watch as that port sells more than yours by four million
That six million convinces nintendo to make a new game in that style
Watch as your franchise falls into obscurity
People forget your franchise was even a thing
People ignore your franchise on virtual console
People make fake rumors about your favorite franchise that never come true
Those rumors end up making your favorite franchise just as niche as R-Type/Gradius/Secret Of Evermore
They hate your character in super smash bros

Dang, I was in my early 20s when Returns came out, so my perspective on it is very different. Despite lacking the capacity of childhood nostalgia for it, it quickly became one of my favorite games in the series and rekindled my passion for Donkey Kong.
dk64 was stupid good and almost unbeatable. Still holds a record for most collectables to win the game and I still haven't beaten it over 20 years later...
I don't care what anybody says, I love that game.
I also love that game. I've 101% over 4 times. I would to just play it on the switch, at this point. If not, I'll fire up my N64 one of these days. 😊😊
You know what? I see the Lego Sets and the "get to know the king of swing!" article as good signs, at least we know that Nintendo hasn't forgotten DK, which opens up to hope for a new DK game.
Yes and no. Yes, because as pointed out, it's been 9 years since Tropical Freeze. But also no, because the lack of releases gives me time to catch up on older titles (I have yet to play DK Jungle Beat, for that matter - the one DK game I missed out on playing when it came out).
I don’t think you’re missing much by not playing jungle beat lol
@@pressaTD You're probably right. But I'm a hopeless completionist, wanting to fully experience the totality of a game series that I'm a fan of. If Pikmin 4 has anything to judge for, then surely F-Zero and Donkey Kong will get an another chance eventually, and it's probably because Nintendo's devs is working on other stuff. They have probably forgotten F-Zero in the 2010s, but I think they finally remembered it, telling from F-Zero 99.
Nintendo punch us fans in the balls when they announced mario vs donkey kong
Fully with you here brother. For the time being though, I've got so much on my gaming backlog anyway that I'm not stressing too much about it. Between the Lego sets and the DK movie that's currently in development, Nintendo is clearly thinking about DK and I'm hoping that maybe we'll get an announcement about a game soon. I ended up becoming a fan of the games Nintendo doesn't care much about: Metroid and Donkey Kong. But I think that's about to change with the launch of the DK theme park, the franchise is gonna get some spotlight and Nintendo will grab the chance to release something, even if it's just a remake. I think the future looks bright for us fans.

Mid compared to Dk64 and DkC
My idea for a sequel to DKC 3 which is also a prequel celebrating the 30 years since DKC1 as well as the original DK game.
Donkey Kong Country 1924 or DK24
The plot is that Funky Kong now has a nerdy son named Ditto who also has a knack for building things--a time machine 1920s style car.
King K Rool and Bowser somehow finds out and decides to steal it so he can travel to 1924 New York City to prevent Cranky from ever meeting Wrinkly Kong
thus preventing the birth of Donkey Kong Jr (the father of Donkey Kong the 3rd aka Donkey Kong) and Bowser can stop Mario from meeting Princess Peach
Ditto has another a time machine 1920s style car and a four monkey team is assembled of him and
Donkey Kong who is older, wears glasses, and carries a suitcase. Donkey Kong is a workaholic banana accountant now.
Candy Kong who is now Donkey Kong's wife. She is starting to feel like Donkey Kong doesn't love her because she is getting older.
When they time travel Candy becomes a 1920s flapper girl.
Kiddy Kong. He's no longer the big crybaby that he used to be. He's even bigger, stronger and possibly more of a cry baby.
Kiddy Kong becomes a 1920s gangster with a Tommy Gun that shoots tomatoes. Kiddy Kong is eager to prove himself as strong just like his brother Chunky Kong.
Ditto Kong is a genius scientist. Ditto Kong can drink a potion that turn him into an enemy such as a Kremling until the potion wears off.
King K Rool's plan was to make Cranky Kong fight Jumpman (aka Mario) long enough that he misses his first date with Wrinkly Kong
who back then was called Jazzy Kong.
In the game when you travel back to 1924 it would be in a black and white film noir style. In a 3D perspective like DK64.
The plan is for Donkey Kong to switch places with Cranky Kong so they can drive Cranky Kong to go to the movies with Jazzy Kong.
It's supposed to be a silent movie. But since they're Kongs it ends up being not so silent as they decide to play some of their own music to accompany it.
(Much to the rest of the audience's dismay)
However it turns out that Bowser and King K Rool were both being manipulated by the real mastermind....Stanley the Bug Man.
Stanley the Bug Man has created a powerful chemical "bug" spray which allows Stanley to bug his victims with subliminal orders.
Stanley's plan is to steal the time machine so the Kongs are stuck in the past and to travel to 2024 DKC island which he plans to rename Stanley's Island
But when all seems lost a mysterious time traveling Kong wearing a fedora allows the Kongs, the Kremlings, the Mario Bros and the Koopas all to travel together to present day 2024
DK Island put a stop to the notorious Stanley the Bug Man.
This would be more in the style of the Donkey Kong Country series games. but it would really have a big brother dystopia vibe. The enemies would be "bugged" Kongs and well bugs too.
Donkey Kong thinks he remembers seeing Fedora Kong before but can't remember where. He doesn't get the chance to ask because Fedora Kong has
to stay behind. Later Donkey Kong finds an old photo of a Kong wearing a Fedora...and it's his dad. Donkey Kong Jr.
I know this would be a very different game from any other Kong game before but I think that's what would make it a lot of fun.
I think one of the strongest elements in all the Kong games is although they may not all be related they are a close family and they each play an important part.
I also think it would be fun to see old enemies such as the Kongs and Kremlings join forces in order to stop the big bad Stanley.
The gameplay would be a fusion of arcade style from the OG donkey kong game, 3D like DK63, side scrolling, like DKC and racing like Diddy Kong racing and a bit of RPG.
Rare's quality was already slipping with DK64 and Banjo-Tooie. They started padding their games out to be as long as possible which is the current trend in open world games these days.

Well we got Dread not too long ago. And from my knowledge, it's one of the best selling Metroid games in a long time. So there's hope that Nintendo will see that making more Metroid games more frequently is a good idea on their part!
Metroid Dread came out less than 2 years ago and we know Prime 4 is currently in development... We don't even have confirmation that a new DK game is in development, and it's not like Samus gets treated like a Mario side character.

Jungle Beat is great and I will hear no such slander
Jungle Beat was a beast. One of the best gimmick games ever, team went on to create Mario Galaxy series. Bad take on the creator's part.
I think the reason for how weird Donkey Kong got in the 2000s is attributed to that era of gaming as a whole. 2D Platformers were so over saturated in the 80s-90s, the average consumer probably felt fatigue & more focused on developers with new innovative ways to play video games. When you got a franchise that started out as a 2D platformer in the 1980s you definitely need to adapt. It went from Arcade Platformer, to SNES Platformer with 3D graphics to a full fledged 3D open world platformer. Donkey Kong 64 existed in that “Collectathon” era. Obviously you had Mario with his 3D outings but was another installment of Donkey Kong like DK64 something Nintendo wanted to pursue when their flag ship character already had its own successful 3D Platformer per console? Country Returns could’ve only came out when the market needed it to. 90s Nostalgia was hot & 2D Platformers were not over saturated. I personally would like to see another crack at a game like DK64 since 3D Collectathons are dead while FPSs are in.
But that’s my take, I’m not a historian, just a guy who likes video games.
It sucks liking DK, EarthBound, F-Zero, StarFox, and many others that won’t come out with stuff consistently.
About a year later it still sucks in case you were wondering
I mean even the fact that this video didn’t get much recognition proves that not many ACTUALLY care about the series. Which is really sad and disappointing. I’d actually go as far as saying that donkey Kong is better than the Mario games.
But DK has some of the best platforming games.
I agree! Which is why it sucks being a fan since we get so little DK games

The main issue is, all the other franchise have studios that can take care of them. DK right now has no one that could take the franchise in.
