I agree, it's so easy to control social media appearances and present your life unrealistically. I think it's becoming something of an epidemic. My dad always said yoy gotta be able to laugh at yourself and I figure why not let others join in haha! :)
Excellent video! Long time watcher, first time commenter. I’ve always enjoy your raw/genuine content. Not like the countless talking heads that regurgitate the same script from their sponsors. 99% of the Yosemite/HD videos are sunshine and rainbows. This video is reality, no glamour, just emphasize the dangers out there. And that’s it’s ok to “fail,” if you can’t complete HD or the hike, it’s ok to turn back. Infinite thumbs up to you man!

@@BackcountryPilgrim Our plane will land on 5th at SFO and we’ll spend few days in the city as we never visited San Francisco before. Yosemite scheduled from 9th til 13th. Mammoth Lakes after this for 3 days and other 4 days at Lake Tahoe before we fly back to the UK.
I'm brand new to CZcams outdoor video creation (since Feb), but I have come to learn exactly what you're talking about regarding not letting the filming aspect ruin a beautiful hike or backpacking trip. I frequently remind myself to put the camera down every once in awhile and take it all in. A view through a lens will never compare to the human eye
I find that shooting trips actually can make me MORE attentive - but yes, once you cross over into "this is a video" it can become a distraction. Balance! :)
Great story Doug, Sounds like you had an adventure that really help you grow as a person and as a hiker. I'm glad you were able to help a few people along the way and creating content isn't everything. I appreciate your honest and hope you have found a different perspective through this experience.

Know the feeling CZcams makes outdoors a job and yo can't enjoy it. Sometimes, you need to step back and think about it. We have fallen into that hole. Just get out and enjoy your trip. No footage is ok. Stay safe, my friend enjoy the outdoors.
It's always a good decision to be able to not do something that could end in disaster. It always best to live to do another hike! I imagine hiking in the dark would be difficult ( it would scare me 😅 ). Also, thanks for letting me know there are scorpions in the park!! 😂 Honestly though sometimes conditions can change the best made plans. You also were there to help others. You really did have some gorgeous scenery on this! I am sure you will get another opportunity for Half Dome! I am doing the same as far as videos go, I want to be sure I am enjoying the hikes I do. Happy hiking and safe travels 😊
Was juat there this last week Left 6am we got half way up subdue And it was 3:30 we didn’t think we could get to the top and back by dark So we bailed and headed back and we were correct , got back the car at 8:20 and getting dark Pretty disappointed in our outcome But being from NJ and not being used to the altitude it took a lot longer than expected,
Any hike that lets you live for the next one is a good hike. I've turned back due to excessive risk multiple times.
Yeah, I'd already summitted on a previous trip so it wasn't really the priority. I just wish I'd had opportunity to shoot that gear video! :)
