  • A story about meeting a surgeon fish on a Red Sea reef while snorkeling.
Divers who have visited the coral reefs of the Red Sea have often seen this beautifully striped fish with a flat oval body, black fins with a bright blue border and two orange dashes on either side of the tail.
This is the Arabian surgeon sohal-one of the most common fish off the coast of the Red Sea.
Usually, surgeons alone self-delve into small algae on corals, the sea floor, ropes, pontoons, or slowly move within a certain area.
One day I decided to make a video about the life of the inhabitants of the reef off the coast of the resort of Marsa Alama.
I waded into the water and swam slowly along the reef.
The reef itself is densely populated.
For the most part, this is a picturesque "trifle", creating the impression of a fantastic kaleidoscope.
Larger fish represent the usual set of representatives of the Red Sea fauna.
These are striped slightly fluorescent sergeant fish, numerous butterfly fish and angel fish that add color to the overall picture, shy red squirrel fish, brown striped zebras and other inhabitants of the reef.
I must say that not all representatives of the reef community willingly posed for me.
Calmly react to the camera and the diver fish-flutes, lionfish, thalassomes and the ubiquitous sergeant fish, which are difficult to catch in the frame, because they move randomly all the time. They were my subjects for filming.
The other inhabitants of the reef, seeing me from a distance, first assumed a wary attitude, and then, at my further approach, fled for their lives.
Closer to the shore, not far from the reef step, I noticed a beautifully painted surgeon fish and decided to capture it as well.
The surgeon, clearly showing off, was concentrating on eating something at the bottom, showing that he was very busy, and there was no need to distract him.
However, my appearance still caused him to look up from his meditative meal. When the surgeon saw the visitor, he swam quickly in my direction, vigorously working his pectoral fins.
He swam close to the camera, turned abruptly, proudly showing his painted side to the lens, and swam back. After moving three or four meters away, the surgeon repeated his maneuver, and then again. It even seemed that the surgeon was posing for the camera, showing off his wondrous beauty in different ways.
Of course, in fact, the surgeon did not even think to pose. The purpose of his intricate maneuvers was to protect the territory from an intruder.
It is known that usually the male guards the territory on which he and several females feed. For the sake of protecting the habitat, surgeons boldly rush into a fight with relatives and other fish.
Because of this fierce behavior when defending the territory, the surgeon is considered one of the most aggressive fish in the Red Sea.
Moreover, the name of the fish-surgeons got because of their formidable weapons-sharp as a surgeon's scalpel, bone orange plates. These plates are located on the caudal stem in special recesses on the sides.
In a calm state, the surgeon's" scalpels " are pressed against the body, but during an attack they rise and can cause serious wounds. In addition, these" scalpels " contain toxic mucus, which causes severe pain and infection.
Fortunately, the sohal surgeon rarely attacks a person, although there are cases of serious injuries to bathers.
The surgeon was clearly worried, and I decided not to bother the fish again, just in case, so I stopped shooting and swam on.
