  • It’s the hectic summer season, working today on an IMT180 so I can move it Monday. The main issue is the hydraulic leak. I share a few tips on tracking them down as well as a little career advice.

I was forcing a lot of logs through a door opening in the barn, the stick being right inside. Job don, I tried to back out but the left track was dead. I heard psssss, and the top of both tracks were wet. Removed the drive panels and inside was packed solid with dry sandy soil dust and 1" pebbles almost to the top. Picked it all out, both sides filled a paint tin - - all dry, no oil. Pressure washed and left to dry. No obvious leak. All functions other than left track working. Couldn't spin the cab to lift up and access trap underneath because stick was in the doorway. Jacked up to get some sticks underneath for traction in the wet ground. Eventually I lost power to ALL functions and emptied all the hydraulics. 2008 1.5 tonne Takeuchi TB016 showing 1500 hours. Any ideas? Anyone? Thanks in advance!

If it dumped the entire tank I’d be looking at suction hose or returns from motors or control valves. Had one in the shop do that after I cleaned the belly out. Stuff was packed in so tight it kept it from spewing, it would just dribble. Usually those will leak without machine running. It’ll take some digging, flashlights and mirrors but usually your finger will find the wire poking out of the hose! FJB!
