What I EAT With My BABA in the BALKANS (BULGARIA) Part III 🧄 What EASTERN EUROPEAN Grandma’s Cook

  • So you want to know what we eat in the Balkans? I’m back with Baba Nina (my Grandma) in Sofia, Bulgaria (Southern Balkans) and the feast has begun!
Life with Baba is centered around FOOD (very very delicious food 😋) and I wanted to share more of what she cooks with you!
Today she will be cooking a veryyyy special meal (that I have never actually tried before, myself), using ingredients we brought to her from the farm… and beyond! All I can say is 🤤
We all know there is nothing better than a home cooked meal from Grandma 👵🏻❤️🌶️🧅🥕🥬🥩🥘
    ABOUT ME:
My name is Laurie and I swapped city life (Manhattan, New York) for a simple life in a semi-abandoned village (Село) in the Balkan Mountains (Eastern Europe).
I literally woke up one morning and realized NYC wasn’t for me. I booked a ticket (the same day!), packed a little suitcase, and moved to my beloved teeny-tiny Bulgarian farm… lost in time. And when I say lost in time I mean LOST-IN-TIME. No time-crunching jobs, no watching the clock, hardly any internet service at all, really. Imagine a village from the Middle Ages… that’s pretty much what you get here. And I’m loving every second of it!
I went from living in a city of 8 million to living on an old, historic farm… population: under 40. From skyscrapers to crumbling abandoned houses. From fast food takeout to barrel grill cooking. The advantages of village life are endless…
Update: My boyfriend and I have saved up and begun renovating our abandoned ancestral homestead (farmhouse). It hasn’t been easy but definitely interesting and extremely rewarding. There is nothing better than farming, harvesting and foraging for our own food… and keeping tradition alive. 🌱

I ♥ muddy tasting fish, Laurie! 😅 it looked really "meaty"
The Banitsa looks like soul food 😍
The rocks in the rock river were rounded by water flow and given the size of them ...a hugely powerful flow ...which is no longer there. I wonder what happened. I'll have a Google 🤔
    Thanks for sharing 😊

Love your channel! Another great program! We used to catch carp around the Great Lakes when I was growing up, and it was always very good. Not muddy. We also have carp every year now for Passover, made into Gefilte Fish (fish dumplings), which are also very good. Bulgaria is so beautiful. Thank you for sharing your adventures with us. The "Stone River" was amazing. Peace be with you friend. 💖🌻🥀🌲🌳🐟

Gefilte Fish! Sounds delicious!!! I love trying new foods and that sounds particularly delicious 😋.

Ahh yes the carp , which as you said is a bottom feeder ,at least here it’s considered a habitat destroyer , they uproot vegetation and eventually a clear body of water can turn muddy . But I do see it is a liked fish I. Europe . Beautiful dry river bed ! Some very large boulders for sure . In the States they have the Asian carp which frankly looks odd as its eyes are on the lower part of its head ? They jump out of the water at the slightest noise and have hurt many a fisherman when hit in the head .. 20 plus pounds will do that 😮 . Love how serene it is there , none of the hustle and bustle of so many areas

    • @sistersofbulgaria9396

Oh wow! I didn’t know carp is considered a habitat destroyer! I also have never seen an Asian Carp before… what a strange looking fish wow 😯. So scary that it actually jumps out of the water and harms fishermen. I wonder if the same is true for the carp we eat here in Bulgaria. I will ask uncle Google 😃. You learn new things every day! Thanks for all the info!!

À while ago I bought a wood saw with handles on both sides. They told me Bulgarians call it "sharran" after the fish. Apparently this fish has large teeth?

    • @sistersofbulgaria9396
      @sistersofbulgaria9396  Před 5 měsíci

Hmmmm 🤔 Sharan doesn’t have big teeth. It hardly has any teeth at all actually 😃. There is another very popular fish in Bulgaria called “shtooka” (щука) that has very big teeth. I think shtooka translates to “pike” in English. Are you sure they didn’t mean “shtooka”?

Hi! I really want to help you but the truth is it’s not easy to get a visa via Bulgaria to Germany. It was a bit easier a few years ago but the government caught on that people are using Bulgaria as a gateway country to get to Germany so they made the rules much stricter. For example, to buy a house in Bulgaria you have to be a citizen.
I had a friend from Pakistan who wanted to get a work visa for Bulgaria and then go to Holland and I did everything I could to help but they still denied him 😔. Unfortunately Europe is not easy to get into anymore because economically people are struggling here too.
